  6. For those who don't get it (lol I was confused at first as well) I think they're trying to say its the member that is always in the middle in pictures. For example Taeyang is always in the middle because of his height.

Members that always stand in the center but not necessarily the Face of the group... for ex Boram always stands in the center of T-ara (T-ara has mostly assigned positions, Boram mostly stands in the center since they became 7 members because she's the shortest and they stand in order of height: Tallest -> shortest <- Tallest

  9. Ohh I got confused cuz I saw Jaejoong, Yoona, Siwon and they are all the faces of their groups but I also noticed the ones like Taeyang who aren't the face. Thanks for clarifying tho!

  16. I remember Leeteuk said that the reason why they put Siwon in the middle because he (well, they think so) was the most handsome and the tallest in the group. When Siwon was in the center, people would get the impression that the other members were as good looking as him. LOL. Well, imo that kinda worked but recently SM have been trying to give more spotlights to Kyuhyun too. If you notice, it's always Donghae-Siwon-Kyuhyun in the middle. I call them the 'golden triangle', although putting Donghae near Siwon or Kyuhyun could be not good either because of the height difference OTL

  19. nope not always..in TVXQ5 the centre (also called the visual) was Jaejoong. however, the face is the most popular member with the PUBLIC (not fansites), and in TVXQ that was Yunho hence why he got so many solo activities when TVXQ made their debut. Jaejoong had many fansites but his public profile was low, thus even though he was the centre, he was never the face of TVXQ.


    another ex is Shinee. the visual or centre is Jonghyun, but the most popular member within the public is Onew, thus, Onew is the face

  29. To be honest, I always thought the visual in shinee was taemin.

    I can kinda see how minho was considered the visual in the early years, but I never figured out who was the main visual in big bang. I remember when big bang first started marketing themselves in japan, they pushed taeyang a lot, but management realized later that top was considered the hot one there. I'm guessing that taeyang is considered the visual in korea.

    Internationally, I got the sense that it used to be taeyang, but now it's Top. I think shinee is another case of this too tbh. Minho is more popular in korea, but taemin is more popular in japan apparently and internationally just like the other members. But, I guess south korea's choices matter the most in this case.

I think yoochun had the same amount of solo activities as yunho in korea since sm was pushing those two when they debuted. BUT yunho has never been the most popular with the public. He has a clean image but that's it

  45. nah yunho and yoochun participated in variety shows in the beginning but they were going for the concepts sm gave them. I mean you can't send the "cold" jaejoong to a variety show to ruin his image. You can see how they started sending them all to shows 2 years after their debut.

  60. Apink's center lineup is pretty effective. The two ugly members in the back where we can't see much of their faces nearing up the the lesser uglies, and finally to the only pretty and worthy member in the group Naeun.

  66. I think irregardless of who was the most popular, Jaejoong was the face of the group, labeled "visual shock" as well. Face/visual just means the center one that represents the group, like how Yoona is always standing in the middle.

  71. Another reason why certain people are the centers have to do with singing. With DBSK, for example, Jaejoong is placed in the center because his voice is the middle ground among all 5 of their voices. If you see them singing ballads, Jaejoong gets to sing with each member several times in one song. He bridges the gaps between their voices' tones. His voice works well with Changmin's high notes, Yunho's low notes, Junsu's big notes, and Yoochun's husky tone.


    Same can be said for Jonghyun. His voice also blends well when he sings with the other 4 members, so his short height isn't the only reason he's in the middle.

  74. SM tries hard to promote Minho as the ~face~ but LBR, Taemin's always gotten attention for his looks even back during debut days. They just can't label Taemin as the ~face~ 'cause he's already known as the dancer and now he's a decent vocalist, too. Without the ~face~ label, Minho doesn't really have anything else except being a sucky rapper.

  90. Jaejoong is/was the visual and also the main vocalist. However, it's true he never was the most popular in Korea among DB5K (Yoochun and Junsu were), but he is without doubt the most popular in Japan, China, Thailand and well the rest of the world.

  94. No, up until the split, Jaejoong was at least 3rd after Junsu and Yoochun in Korea (according to their Daum cafe numbers). Yoochun was the most promoted member. Originally, Yunho was the most promoted but the public liked Yoochun more and that's why Yoochun was more featured in DB5K's CFs and drama/film projects. Junsu had the biggest Korean fandom out of the 5 while Jaejoong had the biggest international fandom. Yunho just happens to have (1) really loud fans like (i.e. Ruby) who love to spread propaganda about his popularity and (2) the advantage of being the "leader" and people tend to remember who the leaders are for idol groups and (3) SM liked him so they promoted him a lot.

    And Junsu recieved attention because his voice.
    Jaejoong wasn't really popular until a time later, like Changmin.

  107. i am pretty sure i remember jaejoong's daum cafe numbers as being consistently in 4th place up until 2009. being in the fandom since 2004, i remember the rankings had always been junsu, yoochun, yunho, jaejoong and then changmin. it had never been much of an issue then because it's just daum cafe rankings, but i guess fans do fight over such things these days. the split caused yunho's numbers to drop alot and he fell behind jaejoong after that.

Minho and Taemin definitely come at a close second and third though. Especially since Minho is the face and he's the one everyone sees all the time.

I never said there was anything wrong with it, I was explaining how the preferential promotion boosts exposure and public's familiarity with the idol, lending them popularity.

  138. no read what i read again. it is normal for those who is designated to be the face to receive more exposure than other members. that is why they are considered as a face people tend to know them better than the other due to the exposure. you have to own a certain qualities to be pushed as a face of the group, which is almost always looks.

  140. But really...what are you talking about? Either you have never actually seen a variety show with Yunho on it or you view it through a lens of delusion.

    Yunho is not the ideal looks in Korea (that is Yoochun) and he was never treated any differently in a variety show than any other DBSK member.

    (Also, how "koreans" treated him on shows? You mean non-entertainers? What normal citizens have you ever seen on old school variety shows)


    For some reason, I always see Yunho fans believing that Yunho was or is treated different than any other idol by the general public.
    Newsflash--general public doesn't care about idols. Even TVXQ. They don't. The most popular idols in Korea earn the same level of respect as Disney Channel stars in the US do. The only people idols matter to is their fans. And amongst fans, Yunho was NEVER the face nor close to the most popular member.

  141. How did they treat him differently? I don't watch variety shows with Taeyeon, Onew or Leeteuk since I don't follow their groups.

    Yunho wasn't the face of DBSK but by being group leader and by being placed often in variety shows among other things, he was given more exposure to the public.



    There are differing thoughts on what "face of the group" means. If it means the representative member that the public knows the group by, then for DBSK it would be Junsu followed by Yunho. If it's the visual center like this post suggests, then it would be Jaejoong. If it's the most popular member, then in Korea it would have been a toss up between Junsu or Yoochun.

  149. Kpop in general isn't popular among the public so the only way to gauge popularity is name recognition and respect and Junsu has both.


    Popularity among other idols doesn't equate to popularity among the public and even then, I, as someone who is not Yunho's fan, cannot recall an idol saying s/he looked up to Yunho whereas I can remember many admiring Junsu. I'm not saying that you're lying since I'm sure you, as YH bias, remembered more of what was said about YH. But because of your bias, you don't follow what's said about other members so you have a biased view of how YH is perceived vis a vis the other members. And even for popularity among other idols, I would say Changmin is more popular since he hangs out with other SM artists quite often in a non-staged way that's for SM's Facebook or comebacks/promotions. For friendships outside of SM, even before the lawsuit Jaejoong and Yoochun were the most sociable and Junsu was quieter. These days, Junsu has his friends in Beast and his musicals as well as his fellow FC Men members.

  161. Catch Me might have came out at the wrong time, at Gangnam Style's peak with over 30K MuBank points i doubt any artist who made their comeback at that time can win over PSY.


    but for KYHD they did won triple crown for MuBank and Inki and once for Before U Go, while they've never won any MuBank awards when TVXQ was 5, yep not even Mirotic won any MuBank awards since Nobody was viral at that time.

  165. for a lot of cases, the "Face" means the member who's well-known by public (not just fans). but i bet it's not append in every case, eg: bigbang, altough taeyang is popular to public, but im sure public are more familiar with TOP and GD... well-known is not always mean popular like "appealing" by fans. But the member that appear in ur head when u heard the group's name.. sort of like that..

  168. if im not mistaken, the position of dbsk members are based on their vocal range, they fixed in that position because it sound the best when they sing acapella. jaejoong is always at the center because he is the main vocalist.
