Preserving conservative culture vs. exposing Korean culture to the world

Article: 'Inkigayo' SISTAR shows off their sexy legs that melt the cold

Source: X Sports News via Nate

1. [+120, -32] The title is seriously going overboard

2. [+119, 70] I don't think dressing sexy like that in front of the Gwanghwamun is appropriate

3. [+24, -6] I disagree with the best replies. I think it's great that Inkigayo, a program that introduces K-Pop to the rest of the world, is introducing cultural stuff like this. A lot of foreigners see short snippsets of Inkigayo on places like YouTube if not the whole show so it's a great opportunity to expose more of our culture. I think that Koreans tend to have a very conservative view of our traditional landmarks, but we need to move forward with the rest of the world and show others our history.

4. [+21, -21] The Gwanghwamun is not a place built for you sexual girls to flaunt your bodies and dance around in!!! Get off that stage!!! If you insist on dancing there, come back in a hanbok.

5. [+15, -7] Why do they insist on showing so much skin??? Do they not have any clothes???

  2. Even though I'm obviously not Korean, I understand where some netizens who disapprove of this are coming from. Being Haitian, I've seen what it's like when native Haitians try to build mass appeal for their music by having gyrating girls booty-popping all over their music videos. While SISTAR isn't trashy like that in the least, it's a far cry from the conservative, traditional culture I've seen and performing in front of a traditional landmark in their trademark concepts is kind of off-putting for me. Sometimes you can't effectively mix traditional culture and modern culture without offending one side or the other so I think it's best to just leave it alone and not cause any controversies.

Actually, due to their copyright issues, Inkigayo (SBS) videos are the most blocked videos on youtube out of the main tv stations that broadcast music shows. So they aren't really trying to spread the awareness internationally at all. If that is their aim, they should allow their videos to be viewed worldwide.

  6. Gwanghwamun is a very old, very famous ROYAL PALACE. It's a place where Koreans go to remember and honor their history. OF COURSE people will think it's inappropriate for idol groups to strut around (in 40 degree weather, that's how cold it is during the day in Korea right now) in tight faux leather outfits shaking their ass at everyone.

The people who go there are mostly tourists, school children on field trips, and elderly people.

Imagine what the reaction would be like if Lady Gaga decided to perform one of her songs in one of her weird ass outfits at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial...

  8. i was watching this performance and thinking how IRONIC it is that they're performing like that in front of such historic building. producers must've not been thinking putting them there.

  9. Comparing a national cemetery with a former leader's residence?

More like Americans and the Lincoln Home, which nobody would care about.

  10. i like conservative..and i don't want korea to change...

  11. Haven't they say Hyorin's dark butt
Most of the time sistar forgot to wear their pants
they fvcking love nano panty shorts
and their legs is not flawless full of scars ew

  12. but americans don't consider Lincoln's house to be their main cultural center (nor do most people even know where it is). Gwanghwamun is, in some regards, one of the main symbols of Korean history and culture.

It's like Ozzy Ozborne being kicked out of whatever city in Texas for peeing on the Alamo. Obviously, dancing in "skimpy" outfits and peeing are not the same, but Americans really wouldn't give a care if someone performed in short shorts in front of anything so that's the closest example I could think of.

I don't really think America has many centrally located historical/cultural landmarks that people really care about to a great deal, like how people in Korea care about Gwanghwamun.

  14. How do you melt the cold though? You can melt snow, ice, ice cream (all of which are cold) but melt the actual cold? Really?!

    ReplyDelete
  15. Can you explain how that is ironic?

  16. That's reserved for Hyuna.

  17. At least they're not wearing "nano shorts"...

  18. If you're in the US you can watch both Inkigayo and Music Core with subs on Hulu.

  19. how bout you make a living dancing in 4 inch heels for a living and see if you don't have scars on your legs from it

    asshole

  20. Probably because tourists go to Gwanghamun to soak in the culture and history, not to see girls twerk.. yet there they are.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Usually I'm opposed to Netizens/anyone criticizing women attire for any reason but.. they're asking for it.

I've been to Gyeongbokkung myself, and they usually do have performances of Korean men with every inch of themselves covered in either hair or traditional dress.
This must have been a violent contrast.

  25. Only Bora that I know of because she burnt her knees in an accident in their So Cool era, she still has some damn nice thighs though.

  26. The point is that a cemetery is a completely different deal altogether. There's isn't a culture out there that thinks prancing around at a war memorial is acceptable.

A cultural hub though? Sure. Especially considering that the Korean government uses K-pop as their cultural branch, so it's more than a little expected.

If there was an issue with this, then the issue should be whether it's appropriate to perform there at all, yet the issue is whether SISTAR is too slutty. It's amusing.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Twerk? Are we looking at the same dance?

    ReplyDelete
  28. lOL i was watchin this yesterday and was like dam thats a kool place to perform ahahha

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  30. in front of Gwanghwamoon...?? hmmm ok. =_=

    ReplyDelete
  31. True.

If their goal was truly to present a mix of traditional and pop music, there are better ways to go about doing it. And performing a superficial pop song [with no historical connotation whatsoever] in skin-tight pleather outfits to ass-shaking choreography is certainly not one of them.

  32. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is not a cemetery. It's a memorial. Nobody is buried at the memorial site. It's a stone wall that has the names of people who have died or are still unaccounted for in the Vietnam War.

Gwanghwamun, both the gate and the plaza, is a reminder to Koreans where they came from and the struggles their ancestors went through. The original gate was destroyed in the 1500's, rebuilt, deconstructed and moved, rebuilt a 2nd time, destroyed again during the Korean War, relocated what was left of the base in front of the structure it was first deconstructed for, and finally restored. The restoration took 4 years.

And Gwanghwamun is not a palace, it is a gate that used to stand in front of the Gyeongbok Palace, the largest of the five grand palaces built during the Joseon Dynasty. Gwanghwamun has been fully restored so far, but Gyeongbokgung's restoration is still being planned out.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Correct. I had Arlington National Cemetery in mind, but my point still holds apart from that.
