Kwak Hyun Hwa slut shamed for stripping in upcoming movie

I know Kwak Hyun Hwa isn't that popular (if you can recall, she tweeted a picture of her eating a banana and got some flak before), but I've seen some of you mention double standards and slut shaming before so I thought this would be an interesting read.

I originally wrote up the article because I saw a comment from a netizen who pointed out that everyone is quick to drool over Rain when he strips his shirt, but just as quick to slut shame any female celebrity that does the same. The comment was deleted after I refreshed (I don't know why).

Article: Kwak Hyun Hwa's exposure, 'House with a great view' how sexy is it...

Source: E-Today via Nate

The article is about her movie 'House With a Great View' being rated 19+ by the movie association for her excessive exposure.

1. [+155, -48] Sounds like a straight-for-TV movie

2. [+150, -36] If a pretty woman with a hot body exposes herself for you... Then you should watch it gratefully instead of criticizing her.

3. [+46, -42] Why is she like that when she graduated from Ewha University

4. [+41, -37] You have become a cheap woman

5. [+30, -12] What do you mean why is she like that when she's from Ewha, it's because she's from Ewha

6. [+29, -25] Why is she so desperate to take her clothes off...?

7. [+27, -22] I love Kwak Hyun Hwa for real ㅋㅋ

8. [+16, -10] If she wants to take her clothes off, then she can do so. What does this have anything to do with what college she graduated from? Does a woman's intelligence drop when she takes her clothes off? Even if you all were from Seoul University, that director would not have cast you if you offered to take your clothes off because you'd never be as pretty as her

9. [+14, -5] Can I request for lots of boob scenes.. With some banana eating shots. Just like you've always eaten them, ok?

10. [+14, -13] She's addicted to taking her clothes off. Eating bananas wasn't enough, she wants to show us her body now and it looks like the association isn't about to block that (because they're probably all malesㅋ)

11. [+11, -8] Her worth would've dropped so bad if there was a bed scene. I guess there isn't one.

  2. I remember her banana selca and that was just wrong on her part (no one eats bananas like that and with that expression on their face) she was clearly being sexual.......

As for her being exposed in a movie, i see no big deal in it...some of my fave Asian (including Korean) actors and actresses have filmed some nude scenes and sex scenes before i see it as art as long as it goes with the movie and not just thrown in there to get people talking or it's done tastefully..

  3. these netizens must have never taken off their clothes and slept with any man because no one want them ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

so they are hating on her.

  6. and the bitching continues...I dont know much about her and all the articles ive seen about her are "scandals" like the banana selca... but some people "dislike" her so much that they keep commenting and commenting in her comments... if you ask me, shes a grown ass woman and shes free to take her clothes off if she wants...

apparently she does this a lot so i get why they're this upset but still the double standards are so strong and obvious

  9. Korea is a conservative country at least publicly and women sexually is a "new" thing since for many decades, women has been teached by society and religion that showing skins = bad, women should be "proper" and any women that show anything different tend to be slut shame and looked down upon.

I don't agree with some of the comments here as a woman but Korea is a conservative AND religious country so I'm not surprise of such reaction. I find what they're saying wrong but these netizens grew up in a society that teached them this is wrong so I don't hold it against these netizens either. It's not their fault but society as a whole, not just Korea, but other countries as well, that need to stop with this old world point of view about women

  10. What eating a banana or graduating from an specific school has to with anything? -_-
This is a job too. If you don't like her work, don't watch it. It's as easy as it.

  11. The female body is a work of art or maybe us men are very easy to please

  12. this movie isn't really matter if not for her past controversial tweets. she really craved for publicity, and i think she has already know herself that what she did isn't something welcomed in her own society, so what she gained as a response isn't something surprising either... a job is a job, though. i don't have any problem with her doing a movie here... but what she did in the past isn't really welcoming in her society. so i guess she's prepared herself for haters. you don't expect you'd gain clean reputation by posting such tweets, don't you? but well, bad publicity is sometimes better than no publicity. kwak hyunhwa herself probably knows that.

and personally, as a woman myself, i still found it crazy for her to do all those publicity stunts. yeah, i'm an "old world point of view" woman.

  13. ah... i read this interview (http://www.soompi.com/2012/07/20/banana-girl-kwak-hyun-hwa-for-maxim-my-breasts-are-natural-touch-them/). and she's indeed already aware of the hate she'll gain. i still don't agree with her (see, i'm an "old world point of view" woman), but i respect her for being bold by herself... i mean, if parents scare of kids following her (err, this argument... lol), then they should educate the kids themselves. i hope her confidence is true and not something to hide her own depression from reading hateful remarks. as she herself fully aware, she's clearly taking path that is out of "norm".

Oh c'mon you know what eating a banana and taking a picture of it suggests

  15. lol people saying Korea is conservative. Yeah in front of everyone they are, but do you know what movie was one of the most watched of all the times? A frozen flower. A movie that is like Porn.

Has sex scenes at every minute, and even has a gay sex secene. YEAH. And the movie was a hit of viewers, and only adults can see it, so, are they that conservative ?

    don't think so.

  16. Just in case some one don't like the old world view thing :P

Women can be conservative or open with their sexuality because there shouldn't be a one image defining the whole gender. However looking down on a girl for showing skin is a form of oppression as well. I hope the ones that slut shamed aren't girls themselves. Girls still face discrimination and it make it worst girls would inflict the same thing on their own gender.

It's still not getting old...you girls just obsessed by worshiping these male idols and accept every bad thing they've done....and saying they didn't mean it....you're just one butthurt girl.....This is what we call double standard

  21. Anon @ 3:16 PM, usually it's men doing the slut-shaming - they're afraid of a woman being independent and expressing herself sexually...

    ReplyDelete
  22. ^ Men are not afraid of "independent" women. Prostitution exists for a reason. It should be legalize.

  23. Thank you for pointing out the sexism and slutshaming! I'd happily read more stuff about double standards in the entertainment world if you find something that you feel like is worth translating :>
And many thank for running this site, I've learned a lot and I really like the way you handle things!
