New Jeans' 'Cookie' lyrics continue to be a topic of controversy

Article: New Jeans' 'Cookie' under controversy... "inappropriate lyrics for minors to be singing"

Source: YTN via Naver

1. [+497, -20] As if "push push baby" was any more appropriate

2. [+206, -42] Their agency, Adore... stop trying to make money this way!! I get that we live in a capitalistic society but you should know not to cross the line!!

3. [+145, -19] The reason this is problematic is that these are minors who are being dressed and told to sing in s*xual ways, which is a big deal in western cultures. Cardi B can sing about cookies because she's an adult but New Jeans = minors.

4. [+101, -10] Western culture takes pedophilia very seriously; you can't possibly compare this to westerners being okay with Cardi B when she's an adult

5. [+114, -28] These entertainment agencies are getting real dirty!! What are they doing with these kids? Are they insane? These types of girl groups should never have been produced to begin with! What kind of influence do you think you're imparting on our kids?

6. [+53, -1] Can we please just let teens perform music that is appropriate for teens! We've crossed the line of having these stick skinny kids perform s*xual things up on stage.

7. [+46, -3] Their CEO Min Hee Jin has had a lot of controversies over pedophilia herself. She's making money off of it now. "Baking cookies" ㅋ

8. [+32, -5] They're just talking about cookies, no? ㅋㅋ I didn't think too hard while listening to it so I didn't get any s*xual vibes from the song at all ㅋㅋㅋ

9. [+23, -0] Just change the lyrics to hobbang~~~ my hobbang that I baked~~~

10. [+20, -1] We call these groups "idols" but they're really just products made by bad adults...

11. [+13, -0] Did they have to be so perverted with this? Why aren't the parents of the minor members suing?

12. [+11, -0] If they change the lyrics to pajeon, it won't be controversial anymore

13. [+9, -0] We need to ban minors being allowed to debut in the celebrity industry

14. [+10, -13] Mind you this is a girl group produced by a woman who researches lolita themes

15. [+6, -0] I don't know this group but I'm starting to feel sorry for them

1. [+67] I agree with the video. I was horrified when I read the lyrics as well. It wouldn't be a problem if they were adults but we really need to do better to make sure that minors aren't singing these types of songs.

2. [+77] I'm really surprised. Very surprised that they're making kids who aren't even 20 years old yet sing a song with such lyrics. There are so many English speakers nowadays, there's no way they weren't aware of what it meant. I'm more surprised that no one thought to point out how problematic it could be.

3. [+96] I really like New Jeans. I've lived all my life in Korea and my English is only at a choding's level but I consider this noise marketing... I think they knew all of the implications of having minors sing this which is why they put all of the imagery with the CDs and all in the music video so that they could have an excuse to grab on to if they needed it. Their movie director is an extremely smart person; there's just no way they didn't know. Just think of Hybe's size. They most definitely have staff members on the team who are fluent enough in English to have caught this. Well, they got the attention that they were scheming for so I hope they leave lyrics like this out of the girls' songs until they hit their twenties, at least... Adults can shoulder the hate for something they purposely created but New Jeans doesn't deserve to be blamed for it too.

4. [+70] If you're a real fan, then you should be listening and feeling worried.

5. [+32] There's no way they didn't know. Why did they use such a gimmick? The song itself is so, so good. Not sure if we should just be thinking of this as a cute song about eating cookies together ㅜㅜ

6. [+48] Min Hee Jin has had a constant stream of controversies surrounding her s*xual work with minor members. Water being shot at their faces, fruits, desserts, specific objects that look too much like certain body parts... Despite it being a topic of controversy on female community sites, it was always buried by fans thinking it was some sabotage by a rival group's fandom. I don't think people would even be caring this much about New Jeans' controversy if Min Hee Jin's Instagram didn't blow up the way it did first... I really think K-Pop needs to implement a system of adults who are looking out for the best interests of these kids, especially since it's an industry that relies on debuting kids in their teens and early twenties.

7. [+192] I noticed in the reaction videos of foreign men that they weren't able to keep a straight face while watching.. and when one would point it out, the others would go "shh shh" because they know the members are all minors. Sigh, I really love New Jeans and the performance style of 'Cookie' so I just hope that we never have to see another issue like this again in the future ㅜ

8. [+23] Everyone knows what the cookie means. Goo Hara's solo song was called 'Choco Chip Cookie'. It's only a problem right now because New Jeans are minors.

9. [+26] I honestly think I'd be more disappointed in Min Hee Jin if she claimed she really didn't know ㅎㅎ like why are you directing a girl group under a company as big as Hybe if you lack such a basic sense of knowledge? ㅎ

10. [+109] Foreigners are a lot more strict with these issues regarding minors than we are. I didn't know about this at all when I first started enjoying the song so I was surprised to find out about all of this. Americans may be lax when it comes to adults singing about super sensitive topics but they will always protect minors from crimes no matter what. I'd prefer their agency just have them stop promoting this song and take down the music video with it.
