Pann: Zico's new track lyric controversy
This Pann summarizes the two major issues with Zico's music video, the first being the Confederate flag and a part in the lyrics where he uses the word "faggot".
1. [+448, -177] Is he crazy?;; Why does he always stir up controversies, I really don't get it. Is it a ploy to get more fame or is he just thoughtless..? There's even a state in America that fines you for using that word and he actually used it in his lyrics... how embarrassing.
2. [+397, -174] That word "faggot" most people know to be a derogatory word but if you look it up in the dictionary, there are two definitions of it and I think people should realize that. The first meaning is gay but it also means minced meat. As for the Confederate flag shirt, it was produced by black American rapper Kanye West to never forget what happened. We don't know whether Zico's wearing it knowing that meaning but I think people should be aware of what that shirt means.
3. [+338, -161] Is Downfall B's concept embarrassing the country ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
4. [+220, -144] I was born and raised in America and that word "faggot" is used commonly here. It's not used in the context that people are assuming... it's like any swear in Korea, it's not used for the original definition. "Faggot" is used more to call someone a loser or a babo over here.
5. [+160, -9] This is my first time learning about the Confederate flag. I had no idea such a thing existed.
6. [+148, -14] I bet Zico just wore it because his coordi gave it to him.. I doubt Zico's smart enough to know anything about history and stuff.. even I'm finding out for the first time today ㅋㅋ Go out and ask people on the streets if they know anything about it, no one will, you losers..
7. [+146, -35] He's just some loser who thought throwing in a few English cuss words would make him look cool since Swings and San-E do it too. Obviously he crossed the line ㅋㅋ shouldn't use words you don't know or at least be all the more careful about it.
8. [+131, -40] I mean, no matter how stupid someone is, they're obviously not going to randomly stop in the middle of the lyrics and be like, "Oh boy, I better put down some gays while I'm at it!!" ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ I doubt his intention was to put down gays or anything;
9. [+120, -22] People are going crazy on YouTube over this right now
10. [+112, -4] I think it's true that he gets more hate simply because he's an idol... but it's also because he's an idol that he should've been more careful. Idols are exposed so much to teens and young fans will obviously memorize lyrics by their favorite oppa... and if they use these words subconsciously while traveling abroad somewhere, who are we to blame?

Pann: Controversy over Zico's lyrics?
This Pann tries to clarify some of the misconceptions over the use of the word "faggot". It links DJ Dopsh's tweets on the issue where he explains that "faggot" is used loosely and commonly in America to mean "loser" or "idiot".
The Pann also links various other instances in K-hiphop songs where the word "faggot" is used, for example in the lyrics of Epik High, Yoon Mirae, San-E, No Brain, Geeks, and Cho PD.
Lastly, it links a picture of Kanye West wearing the Confederate flag along with his production intent.
1. [+217, -59] More posts like this need to go up, enough with all of the hate on Zico
2. [+202, -222] Honestly, I don't even know if the song's all that good anyway... People keep talking like Zico's better than MC Mong but his songs ranked way lower than him on the charts ㅠㅠ
3. [+182, -55] Pathetic how people are witch hunting Zico without knowing any facts or evidences
4. [+75, -127] Block B fans are scary, look at these upvotes. You guys really think Zico doesn't deserve all this hate? Even international K-Pop fans are up in arms over the use of the F word, and you guys are really trying to justify the use by saying he meant it as the meaning 'loser'? Please educate yourself before writing clarification trash like this.
5. [+60, -18] The word "faggot" is used in America like the word "loser" or "idiot" is used over here. And the song is rated 19+, why are people judging him like he's an idol when he released this as an adult rapper? And the Confederate flag shirt? You guys do realize that he wore it for the reverse meaning, right? Zico's not as thoughtless as you guys think, you can tell just from reading his lyrics. Why wouldn't he be careful as an idol with lots of scandals under his belt to begin with?
6. [+48, -11] Oh, so it was a witch hunt all along? Poor Zico..;
7. [+48, -12] Posts like this get buried while witch hunt posts get upvoted of course
8. [+46, -10] (Post of Yoon Mirae, Dok2, and San-E's lyrics where they use the word "faggot")
-
I've only known 12 year old boys who play Call of Duty to use that word as an insult. It's certainly nowhere near as casual as loser or idiot. Most people would be pretty disgusted with you if you used it. Well, most adults anyway.
ReplyDeleteI think people get offended too easily these days.
ReplyDelete3. [+182, -55] Pathetic how people are witch hunting Zico without knowing any facts or evidences
ReplyDeleteEvidences? Evidences or not, IT'S. STILL. WRONG.
lol fangirls please
ReplyDelete5. [+160, -9] This is my first time learning about the Confederate flag. I had no idea such a thing existed.
ReplyDeleteglad I'm not the only one lol. those fans talking about it and idek about that omg i thought i was stupid.
LMAO at Knetz trying to educate each other about American culture
ReplyDeletekanye west....
ReplyDelete"And the Confederate flag shirt? You guys do realize that he wore it for the reverse meaning, right?"
ReplyDeleteOkay, cool. I'll just put on this t-shirt with the rising sun flag on it. I'm not Korean and have no right to reclaim something that was never used to bring misery and suffering to Koreans, but it's fine, right? I'm wearing it for the reverse meaning.
If it's okay for Zico, it's okay for me.
I have never heard that term NOT as a derogatory term towards gays over here. IDK where this person got that idea that we use it in place of "idiot".
ReplyDeleteHii NB could you please post an article on feedback about lee joon's acting in Mr.baek and the ratings? Thankyou!
ReplyDeleteKanye West is not being an idiot wearing the confederate flag, he is a black man wearing the flag to show that shit doesn't faze him. I'm more pissed that they compared zico wearing the flag versus a black man
ReplyDeleteI always find this excuse tiring; that because other people do it too, it's okay. It's not.
ReplyDeletePeople doing it before does not make it any better.
ReplyDeleteWhat Zico included in his music video was offensive and extremely derogatory to those of the LGBT and black community. Seriously, a little fucking compassion and sense would be useful for the commenters that are defending this.
Koreans shouldn't feel bad for not knowing the word or the connotation of the flag but they just need to listen to international fans who are offended. And did all those khip-hop artists really use that word? :/
ReplyDelete3. [+182, -55] Pathetic how people are witch hunting Zico without knowing any facts or evidences
ReplyDelete"witch hunting"
"without knowing any facts or evidence"
LMAO WHAT
I've seen a lot of people (immature, I'll admit) use the word faggot as a diss to call someone stupid, rather than a diss to a gay person.
ReplyDeleteThought it was kanye west
ReplyDeletey'all care too much about things you shouldn't have to worry about
ReplyDeleteAnd all those people who use faggot to mean loser are just a wrong as Zico.
ReplyDelete"5. [+160, -9] This is my first time learning about the Confederate flag. I had no idea such a thing existed." Same way here, we all learned something new.
ReplyDelete...Sideway glances to the people saying it's okay to use the "f" word or even trying to change it's meaning... Poor oppa didn't know TT
4 I very rarely hear anyone using the f word. You must've had some pos friends.
ReplyDeleteLet us piss all over your cookie and then we will see how tough it is.
ReplyDeleteHonestly! They think proof of other people doing it clears Zico's record, but it doesn't. They're in the wrong, too.
ReplyDeleteI dont think most people outside of the US knows. That makes him wearing that jacket an unnecessary contreversy, he can just say i learnt and im sorry.
ReplyDelete"was produced by black American rapper Kanye West to never forget what happened"
ReplyDeleteAwkward to those calling the jacket racist now. The irony.
But the word basically circles around to being "stupid /because/ you are like a gay person"
ReplyDeletehalf of this was probably just blown up by sjw's anyways
ReplyDeleteMost of these comments are so annoying, just because a word is commonly used does not make it okay, just because Kanye West wore a jacket with the flag on it doesn't make it okay, people will constantly compare stuff other people did to what their oppas did to justify why it's okay, but news flash it isn't okay no matter what the circumstances.
ReplyDeleteEven Eminem got shit for using this word. What was Zico thinking? You just can't get away with this.
ReplyDeleteWhat really gets me is using Kanye as an example. He's Black and Zico is Korean. There's absolutely no comparison there. Here's quote about wearing it: “React how you want. Like I said, any energy you got is good energy. You know, the Confederate flag represented slavery… So I took the Confederate flag and made it my flag. It’s my flag now! Now what are you gonna do?”
ReplyDelete8. [+46, -10] (Post of Yoon Mirae, Dok2, and San-E's lyrics where they use the word "faggot"
ReplyDeletei am not one of the offended or anything but its about those that feel offended.
it still doesnt explain the mv thou.
Calling someone a faggot is commonly used as a way to emasculate a male coupled with the false judgement that all gays are feminine and of less value than a straight man.
ReplyDeleteSo why they may not be calling a gay person a faggot, they're basically saying "You're not equal to me because I view you as a homosexual man [womanly]" .
It's pretty fucked up either way you look at it.
I hope those netizens telling people to calm down from zico wearing the confederate flag are also telling people to calm down from kiko in front of the rising sun flag
ReplyDeleteI think Zico probably didn't know about the confederate flag. Most people who aren't American don't. I'm not American and we never learned about it in school, I only know what it is because American friends online told me about it.
ReplyDeleteBUT he should apologize. If a foreign star was wearing the rising sun flag in a music video, Korean netizens would be demanding an apology. You know they would. No amount of "but he didn't know" or "but this Korean idol wore it once" would be enough for them. It's the same here. Zico needs to apologize.
LOL let's make this clear, Kanye West is an idiot. The confederate flag is still a racist symbol. It's a flag that many racist people use to symbolize their allegiance with the confederate.
ReplyDeleteYou might get a free pass if you aren't American. If you are then yes you are dumb for not paying attention during history class.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm an American and I've never heard anyone use that f word to call someone stupid. I've heard gay, but never the f word.
ReplyDeleteYeah Y'know. It's perfectly okay to an uneducated, ignorant fuck.
ReplyDeleteIt's easy to say that for someone who's never been tortured or picked on constantly with the word.
ReplyDeleteDon't speak unless you have been in the situation ^^
well international fans try to educate themselves about korean culture so
ReplyDeleteI'll never understand why people think it's okay to call someone offensive names just because other people do it. You would definitely get side-eyed for calling someone a "faggot" where I live, no matter the intention.
ReplyDeletefucking idiots oh my fucking GOD.
ReplyDelete[+338, -161] Is Downfall B's concept embarrassing the country ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
ReplyDeleteI wonder if Block B are all going to get dragged into Zico's mess now? It seems like their good luck streak has run out.
in other countries like UK faggot mean meatball or fag means cigarette but the word is still and will always be offensive, i just hope these koreans just don't use those words so freely just because american artist used it! Using it doesn't make you cool stupid zico, it makes you just a complete moron
ReplyDeleteMost of these comments by knetz are so dumb. How would y'all like it if I, as a foreigner, appeared on Korean TV and used a common ilbe term, and then claim "oh I thought it was as common as 'idiot' or 'loser'"? Or what if I wore a jacket with the Rising Sun on it and claim "oh I had no idea this was even a thing, I just thought it looked cool"? Knetz be trying to educate each other on international relations but they ain't even educated themselves.
ReplyDeletelmao did you see bo peep era/concept??
ReplyDeletewhy would he do that though he hasn't "learnt" from anything else people have talked about. he should shave his head and leave us alone again.
ReplyDeletethese people defending zico thinking they know shit about american culture and slang need to sit cause they probably googled stuff thinking that's enough to justify his use of the word
ReplyDelete"these days" versus five years ago when you were in middle school or?
ReplyDeleteAre you from the South? Its mainly used in the Southern part in the US. My first time seeing one was when I was on the way home from school and someone had it waving in their front yard. (My school and that house was on the same street). It doesnt give people a nice feeling to see that flag waving around and about.
ReplyDeleteAnd he tried to use it in a non-racist way and is designing clothes with it. So the person we want to blame here is Kanye, not Zico for wearing something his stylist picked out for him thinking it was cool because it is branded.
ReplyDelete"The Confederate flag symbolizes dehumanization, injustice and pain. It
ReplyDeleteis a stark reminder of an era in our history that was defined by the
abhorrent practice of slavery. And it is representative of a mentality
that looked upon Blacks as inferiors who needed to remain in the
shackles of subservience. If you don't believe me, ask family members of
those that were beaten, castrated and lynched under the guise of that
Confederate flag."
"(Post of Yoon Mirae, Dok2, and San-E's lyrics where they use the word "faggot")"
ReplyDeleteSo they're insensitive, ignorant people who need to apologize as well. What's your point?
Kanye West may have designed that jacket, but we all know Kanye West is an idiot. No person with sense in their mind would ever wear that. Also, the f-word is a homophobic slur. Anyone who uses it is an idiot. End of story.
ReplyDeleteIt's still a SLUR.
ReplyDeletewell they gotta do dumb things to "protect the oppas" :/
ReplyDeleteKanye West is not an idiot
ReplyDelete8. [+46, -10] (Post of Yoon Mirae, Dok2, and San-E's lyrics where they use the word "faggot")
ReplyDeleteStill doesn't make it okay, regardless of who uses it in their songs, lmao.
5. [+60, -18] The word "faggot" is used in America like the word "loser" or "idiot" is used over here.
I live in America, and only immature kids use it in that context. Otherwise, I don't think a lot of people would throw that word around like it's nothing.
for me, there's no need to be hypocrite, people are on fire about this...but people are alrite with other swear words/offensive terms...why must people be selective? i find that hypocrite. and the people who say there are more than one meaning of the word is right, why assume that the only default meaning is your meaning? (look up the word on google by the way....) that's rather pretentious. and btw, he's not in America...people are all like comparing to the standard of American, use the argument when he debut officially in America...and now what will you say about other respected names up there who also use the word? they also deserve to be criticized? then do it. i won't say anything about the flag since i'm not that knowledgeable in American history ....but half of the issue(the f word), n the arguments abt the controversy is downright hypocrite, and selective. this is coming from someone who don't even like hiphop/Block B or whatever so no need to call me his fangirl...cuz i barely even know him other than his name n his group n whatever on the news...of course, from the roaring sentiment here, i can feel someone will argue to try 'educate' me that i'm wrong, but save your time, i'm not coming back to check....i find many aspect of the uproar hypocrite n pretentious n that's that.
ReplyDeleteit was a word seen in bad light in the past and it was carried on to be seen in bad light. doesn't matter if it use to be used (and still is, but not entirely anymore) to bring down gay people, some people will use it in a different light. words change sometimes. bitch means female dog but bitch is also something that you can call a woman (or a man) to bring them down. gay used to mean glee or joy, but now it's used to describe a person who likes other people of the same sex. he shouldn't have used it because we're in a sensitive time era right now (what with all of the gay rights protests going on) but we can't entirely blame him. he wasn't raised in the US and didn't learn US history.
ReplyDeletethat definitely doesn't mean that we can't be offended. my best friend is gay and although i haven't asked her how she feels about it, she probably wouldn't be happy.
"Kanye West is not being an idiot wearing the confederate flag, he is a black man wearing the flag to show that shit doesn't faze him." OR he doesnt know what this flag means? I wouldn't be surprised tbh
ReplyDeletei honestly don't care about the 'faggot' issue but i'm more interested in his use of the confederate flag
ReplyDeletewhen the style is praised: YES! Oppa is amaaaazing! STYLE ICON! Fashion King1!!!1! Oppaaaaaaaaa!
ReplyDeletewhen oppa wears confederate flag: He didn't mean it!11!! His coordi made him wear it! He didn't want to, but he did because his coordi MADE HIM. Oppaaaaa...
Well I am not sure but if an American did use one of your history as a joke between japan and Korea you will not like it right especially if we made fun of it or play one of the song that abnormal summit play you guys will talk about it and insult us right we all are trying to learn here but with a country who already don't know enough about the black history already and who thinks this kind word is fine you will see more person use it as an excuse this word is wrong I should be explain the real meaning of it
ReplyDeletehe "likes being an idiot"......
ReplyDeleteThese k-netz are probably the same ones who dragged gaga when she wore Korean letters in Japan. If the "she didn't know any better" didnt work for her, why are they defending Zico.
ReplyDeletekim do hoon. works with ft island/cn blue, k will etc
ReplyDeletesays a person completely detached from how things affect people because it doesn't affect them the same way.
ReplyDeleteThose people will react like a crazy aunt if it was about their country. Shame on those comments.
ReplyDeleteWithout that " Confederate flag" issue that mv and song is still a trash. F bomb word, faggot, banana scene (eww) and the way those cheapo girls dancing. I'm wondering how people still supporting him. He's not a good example to teenagers out there.
Zico isn't stupid. He knew what it meant and he probably wanted to be controversial but he probably wasn't expecting to receive such a negative response. Those netizens comments about it having different meanings are just as stupid. It does have different meanings, but he was using that word in a negative way.
ReplyDeleteHaha exactly like international netizens.
ReplyDeleteI better not hear another word about Mizohara Kiko being a right-winger. She's just reversing the meaning of the flag, guys!
ReplyDeleteI hate that people try to say its okay because many people or other famous people use it. No its not! That word is hurtful and demeaning, it's not COOL. I'm not gay but even I know the effects that word could have..... Aigo~
ReplyDeleteYou just can't defend what he's doing. wow...
ReplyDeleteyeah haha like what evidence is needed? He had a mv, we saw it, and he wore the outfit in it. That's evidence enough
ReplyDelete5.
ReplyDeleteWhat's the reverse meaning of the Confederate flag??
it's the 'social justice warrior' era
ReplyDeleteYeeeeeeep Oppa is an artist that does everything himself until he fucks up, then he's just an idol forced to do everything by their label.
ReplyDeleteLOL buch of stuoid people I hope when a rapper use the japanese imperial flag and use a a offensive words to discribe koreans, they dong go true intrnaten hating and said "is notmal every one use it" " we did not know" yeah right, I'm DONE wiht Zico, I will nt support him or bloak B any more
ReplyDeleteWe wouldn't have to bring justice to shit if this world wasn't so fucked up right now.
ReplyDeleteBut most international fans are American....
ReplyDeletethis whole essay of bullshit... please sign off and get back to work before your teachers sees you using the computer lab equipment improperly.
ReplyDeleteI hate that fucking logic, its not even logic , since at least 3 do it i have the right to....
ReplyDeleteWhen a black man like Kanye wears it he's mocking the people (racist) who hold it so dear. It's like he's saying "look at me wearing this symbol you love so much, am I ruining it for you?"
ReplyDeleteWhen Zico wears it that meaning is not there because that flag was not used to oppress him or his ancestors.
I think so. Zico is like the face of Block B. The most popular member.
ReplyDeleteMTE it's like excusing white people for using n-word because black people use it too!!
ReplyDeleteSo it's "okay" if a black man to wear confederate flag? I believe most Asians do not know what's confederate flag...
ReplyDeleteThe mental gymnastics people are exercising just to justify Zico's actions is really fascinating. And it will never cease to amaze me how people will choose to protect a complete stranger who doesn't feel any effect from their efforts over issues with tangible and detrimental impact on millions of people. Just, where the fuck are your priorities?
ReplyDeleteok
ReplyDeletethe word "faggot" is a derogatory term for queer people. people of the LGBTQ community would obviously be offended at an insult that degrades them.
ReplyDeleteThen he needs to get a new stylists and a new song writer because none of this shit is right.
ReplyDeleteHe knows what it means, if you're black in america and have been in the south, you most likely know what it means.
ReplyDelete1. [+217, -59] More posts like this need to go up, enough with all of the hate on Zico
ReplyDeleteOppa means its, and he deserved all the hate
Exactly, No one wears it besides Kanye & after all the criticism he doesn't wear it anymore. It was all for publicity with him.
ReplyDelete3. [+182, -55] Pathetic how people are witch hunting Zico without knowing any facts or evidences
ReplyDelete6. [+48, -11] Oh, so it was a witch hunt all along? Poor Zico..;
>. <
What's so funny? At least their comments were considerate and thoughtful about American "culture"
ReplyDeletebutt hurt fans stay butt hurt.
ReplyDeletewho approves these videos? jesus christ
ReplyDeleteyou're white, right?
ReplyDeleteYeah, as much as I think Kanye's reasoning is foolish, I'd bet my life that Zico ain't even that deep about it, lol.
ReplyDeleteAt this rate MC Mong is better than Zico.
ReplyDeleteIt's okay, just like it's okay for black people to say nigga, but not non-black people. Yes obviously most people don't know what the confederate flag means if they live outside US, which is why they shouldn't insert their opinions or say what is wrong or what is right
ReplyDeleteSo how was him using it? Just as a random flag? Like what context would you say he used it in in the music video?
ReplyDeleteYeah I'm side-eyeing San E right now. I started to love him because of his duet with Raina and I'm not sure I really want to like him anymore. It doesn't sit right with me.
ReplyDeleteHe was just wearing it. Like it's a random flag.
ReplyDeleteits kinda hard not to know if you're american because the civil war does get covered in history and they do show the flag in the history books
ReplyDeleteAnd I-fans act like they know everything in Korea by reading translation eventhough sometimes it's mistranslated.
ReplyDeleteWell not all black people know what the flag is. People from the North aren't really exposed to it. It's southern people most.
ReplyDeleteI'm am NOT excusing the idiot named Kanye West, just fixing your statement.
They're justifying his actions by pointing at others that did it to make it look like it's okay. It still doesn't make it okay. Like one of the comments posted, he's an idol. He DOES need to be more careful when posting anything. He influences a much larger demographic than he thinks, so releasing it as an "adult rapper" doesn't change anything. He's an idol, a celebrity, and he screwed the fuck up with this.
ReplyDeleteAhh ok, thank you! ^^
ReplyDelete?? So?
ReplyDeleteInternational netizens criticize Korean culture all the time. Always tell them to move on when they talk about their history.
That word is not okay to say AT All. I don't think black people should use it either.
ReplyDeleteYup, this is my 1st time hearing confederate flag too
ReplyDeletewell I will not support the group any more, sorry. till P.O have his solo
ReplyDelete[+146, -35] He's just some loser who thought throwing in a few English cuss words would make him look cool since Swings and San-E do it too. Obviously he crossed the line ㅋㅋ shouldn't use words you don't know or at least be all the more careful about it.
ReplyDeleteThis. Technically, he's good and talented but he's just a non English speaking rappers out there that use slang words for their cool image yet without knowing it totally.
He was trying to be satirical.
ReplyDeletei hate these excuses "BUT THEY DO IT TOO!11!1!!!111"
ReplyDeleteYou have every right to stop being a fan. I'm still going to support the group though.
ReplyDeleteIf you're over 10, it's not used like that. They're making excuses.
ReplyDeleteOppa is rapping about minced meat okay! Everyone loves food why can't he include minced meat?
ReplyDeleteI have seriously seen so much more people protecting oppa during this than any other situation ive been around for in kpop. It's ridiculous.
ReplyDeleteno you're not, because I clearly stated been in the south. your comment isn't needed bye
ReplyDeleteWell-
ReplyDeleteNo, his explanation for using the flag was so that he can re-claim a symbol that carries with it hate, violence, and oppression. As a Black person, that's for him to do. As a Korean person, there isn't even a single instance where Zico would have that same right.
ReplyDeleteJust because others use the word/wear offensive things doesn't mean anyone should be exempt from the consequences. Other k-hip hop artists need to take note too.
ReplyDeleteAlso, as an American, I would like to point out that that particular word is not used "commonly." In fact, I'd say over the years, it's become known more as a word that only the worst of the worst use. street cred or whatever is lost, not gained, by using that word.
They turn crazy whenever or anything similar to rising sun flag, but look how they take it's easy on other culture. A lot of foreigner try to respect their history when they're into kpop, can they do the same?
ReplyDeleteDo American Hustle Life season 2 with Zico. Have him wear his jacket and playfully call someone the f word.
ReplyDeleteLet's see how long netizens can continue to believe it's just a casual insult like loser and the jacket's ironic after Zico loses all his teeth to somebody's fist.
this is not an excuse , how muh artist wne to japanese imperoial soldier temple or used the imepral flag? and korean still ahted them up, even whne they said they did not know, they ended up apologizing, Zico does not, so for me I wll not support a person like him
ReplyDelete..
ReplyDeleteI thought Zico received a letter from black fans in the past about the n-word but he still used it later ? If he apologizes, won't he do it again ? I'd love to see Korean's reaction if a western celebrity like Justin Bieber or anyone wore a japanese rising flag... Don't be hypocrites, when it's about kiko taking photos with that flag all I-fans are like " wow how disrespectful ! " but when it's their bias (male) "Oppar didn't know/mean it" knowing or not an apology is a necessary. A sincere apology. You don't need to be American to be educated about that, do you seriously only learn when you're at school ? Asians too were discriminated in the US back then, they were just a minority, I'm worried if the stylist took that jacket and gave it to him with the flag as if it was a brand. Everyone knows about slavery nowadays...For those who didn't know, be thankful you learned something... There are a lot of American K-pop fans... I hope he apologizes and raise awareness among Idols.. I knew I was right about liking P.O...
ReplyDeleteThey were in no way being "considerate" about American culture, if they were they would not have said things like
ReplyDelete"6. [+148, -14] I bet Zico just wore it because his coordi gave it to him.. I doubt Zico's smart enough to know anything about history and stuff.. even I'm finding out for the first time today ㅋㅋ Go out and ask people on the streets if they know anything about it, no one will, you losers.."
Even if Zico's "not smart enough" to know about the Confederate flag, he should still accept responsibility for it, rather than blaming it on his knowledge. These netizens were not being considerate of American culture at all, otherwise they wouldn't have so lightly brushed aside the issue with the flag.
I agree. Even though I feel offended when other black people use it.
ReplyDeleteGood God!! How are they going to understand that this is not a witchhunt!! The confederate flag is neither a fashion statement nor a reversed meaning! It's demeaning and very ignorant about black history! how would you like it if I wear the inperial flag in Korea and say hey Japan colonized my country too but we survive so fuck this flag! So done!!
ReplyDelete/sigh x 2000
ReplyDeleteHe has every right to wear it because that jacket is being sold through out the world. Exactly like you said, Kanye West is RECLAIMING the symbol and is using it in his designs.
ReplyDeleteI don't think someone who use mor make up than me and i'm a girl have the right to call someone ''faggot''
ReplyDeletewell, i'm not american lol. yay?
ReplyDeleteI can't believe Block B fans are trying to justify Zico's use of the word "f*ggot" as if it was meant to be another word for "loser". If anything, that makes it worse. It's basically stating that anyone that is a homosexual is the equivalent of a loser. It reminds me of how people use "retard" as another word for "idiot" and how derogatory that is towards actual mentally handicapped people.
ReplyDelete2.
ReplyDeleteThis is trying really hard to shield oppar. That flag excuse is really reaching.
1. He isn't African American so has no reason to ~remember~ what happened.
2. Just because someone else does something ignorant doesn't make it okay for others to do it too. It's still fucking offensive
3.This is like saying that if Kanye West can say the N-Word, it's okay for Zico to do it too.
You know what though, fine, let's say that the flag was a result of genuine ignorance and a decision made by his stylist since this commentator really wants to excuse him.
F*ggot in this instance was not being used in it's other meaning. It was being used as a blatant, derogatory statement to belittle his competition by insinuating that homosexuality is an insult. As in, something to look down on. There is no defending this.
Zico needs to realize that times have changed and it's not okay to say those words anymore.
face palms for years
ReplyDeletegod forbid people speak up about injustices they face instead of sweeping them under the rug.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3NAUgCm-3Tc
ReplyDeletejeeze why are you so extreme? no one even said that about Zico
ReplyDeletejust saw the music video and zico is trying wayyyyy to hard
ReplyDeleteNot just Zico, it seems like many Koreans need to realize that times have changed, and such words and images shouldn't be used anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnd Yoon Mirea. I'm lost my respect for her
ReplyDeleteNot really
ReplyDeleteJonah hill even apologized after he used that word to insult a paparazzi. Zico stop being such a try hard. The first video you did for the song was perfectly fine. And the people trying to desensitized the confederate flag, why don't you try doing the same thing with rising sun flag or the nazi one. People need to educate themself.
ReplyDeleteCertainly people can wear what they want for sure, but the simple right to purchase and wear certain products doesn't absolve individuals of criticism or from looking like assholes.
ReplyDeleteIf you aren't black then your opinion about it's usage doesn't matter. And if you are black you don't have a right to police other black people who do use it.
ReplyDeleteYes they said that and they even try to justify the use of the word
ReplyDeleteLouis C.K, a straight man who has never had to worry about someone screaming that word at him while they beat him to death, is not the expert on this issue.
ReplyDeleteTBH, I'm American and wouldn't expect them to know about such a thing. I mean, how many of us knew the significance of the rising sun flag before K-pop??
ReplyDeleteThis is U.S. civil war history and Koreans barely know their own history (it's not really emphasized in their curriculum).
I was one of them! They were asking for The Boys but I came instead! Before The Boys, the only girl group I followed was 2NE1.
ReplyDeleteI hate it that Americans represent International netizens now -.-
ReplyDeleteNo not all of us are mad or care. He wore what some people say is offensive clothing and a word so yes if he wants to please potential fans he should not do it again. Simple.
Am i the only one that doesn't want to be in the shadow of American netizens? their comments are too 'passionate' for me lol on other issues as well.
Kanye West wore that jacket as advertisement for a line of his Yeezus merchandise. He wanted other people, who are not necessarily black, but were his fans to wear the confederate flag. Several prominent black civil rights activists called him out on it. They said he missed an opportunity to seriously address the symbolism of the flag, and that he just wanted the noise from controversy for his brand.
ReplyDeleteNo one has the right to call anyone by that word, okay? NO ONE. Makeup and gender have nothing to do with it.
ReplyDeleteI know, but I feel bad for the guy for getting heat for something his stylist picked out for him thinking it was cool because Kanye Wests' name is behind it. As for his "faggo" slur, that is all on him.
ReplyDelete8. [+131, -40] I mean, no matter how stupid someone is, they're obviously not going to randomly stop in the middle of the lyrics and be like, "Oh boy, I better put down some gays while I'm at it!!" ᄏᄏᄏᄏ ᄏᄏᄏᄏ I doubt his intention was to put down gays or anything;
ReplyDeleteLuls
Hahahahaha xD omg
ReplyDeleteWhy did Beyonce wear something like this?
ReplyDeletehttp://cdn10.mixrmedia.com/wp-uploads/ningin/blog/2009/11/beyoncevideophone.jpg
Yuri, Hyoyeon, and Sunny.Especially Yuri.
ReplyDeleteNo it's not okay. Kanye West can protray irony within his aesthetic because that's what he's known to do; making a "powerful" statement, but his motives were rather tasteless nonetheless. If an ordinary black person wore a confederate flag, no black person including myself will ever support that, unless they idolized Uncle Ruckus.
ReplyDeleteYes the "N" word is commonly used in urban black vocabulary but most black people like myself absolutely despise the word. Seriously, where are you gettung your sources from?
This is interesting. The k-nets are educating each other about american culture when most of them knownothing about it. It's similar to how i-nets are always trying to explain to each other aboutkorean culture when most of them don't know anything about it.
ReplyDeleteWhile that's all very true. NOT EVERYONE is familiar with American history. The world doesn't revolve around the United States of American JFC. Give people a break.
ReplyDeleteI'm talking about Zico ffs of course no one has the right but here we're talking about him....
ReplyDeletepeople know some words are offensive, still manage to use them in conversation, public speech or in song and at the same time they get mad at other people using the word, etc. It's a damn vicious circle. Don't use the damn word if you know it can hurt someone, why use it just to make your song sound cool? It's not cool.
ReplyDeleteIt's the reverse meaning.
ReplyDeleteYes but so what if he wears more make up than you?
ReplyDeleteia. e.g. anyone who wears a swastika is an idiot, not trying to outsmart the dumb. it's just dumb.
ReplyDeletethat said, most idols have stylists who pick their clothes. i seriously doubt that zico knowingly picked it. i doubt that the stylist knew either.
http://www.trapstyle.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/tumblr_lxt48wTuqD1r7zzi2o1_500.jpg
ReplyDeleteDid you know that's part of USA culture to insert their opinions in the issues of another countries when unsolicited? With the rest of your post I agree. I only know about US history because I love watching history movies and docs otherwise I would never know about the flag or anything else.
ReplyDeleteI'm not American but I'm respect their sensitivity. I bet you will react like that too if this "rapper" disrespects your country.
ReplyDeletePlease educate this person.
They have a whole album out?
ReplyDeletelol no I'm black.
ReplyDeleteShe should be burned at the stake, now huh? The face that she's probably not familiar with East Asian history makes her the worst alive now I guess (if we use international - mostly American- kpop fans POV of course)
ReplyDeleteI am African American born and raised in a southern state. I did not say "Hey You! Don't say the N word because I think it's wrong. You are black and should know better!" I only voiced my opinion on the word
ReplyDeleteI remember. Black people will be on either side of the fence. Kanye did talk about it. He wanted to take the flag, take the meaning away from white supremacy and slavery. He didn't want kkk or white supremacist to be able to use the flag further as symbolism for anti-black, and not everyone agreed/agrees with his thinking. Kanye West, a black man, was profiting off of something white supremacist didn't want him to profit off of. That was his message. Just like how black people re-took "nigger" it's still debated within the community if we should stop or not, especially because it confuses non-black people. Zico's shirt did not come from a black person's clothing line, it does not send a "fuck you" message to white supremacist, especially with zico's/k-hiphop/rap/kpop history of being anti-black. Its apples and oranges these messages and blurred messages sent out
ReplyDeleteI know many people who are part of the LGBTQ community who actually use that word like if it's nothing, though.
ReplyDeleteNot in this case at least, but most times he is very more much so an idiot.
ReplyDeleteYea because you totally know me.
ReplyDeleterme. nhf this code for individuals who wish to uphold whatever systematic structures that keep them comfortable and/or in power. get out with that. as soon as marginalized people aren't murder, criminalized, harassed, or discriminated against, we'll still be here, so please get used to it.
ReplyDeletethe person who said people use it as "loser" or "idiot" is living in america so i wonder who he got that from? fellow americans!¡!¡¡!
ReplyDeleteim not saying it's okay to be using the word but yall should stop acting like you're so above knetz all the time. gets hella annoying since you're all the same tbh
google. Kanye did speak about wearing the flag and why. And I posted further up an explanation
ReplyDeleteThis does not mean straight people are permitted to use it though. What is this logical fallacy rn?
ReplyDeleteThat Netizen is actually right, but that doesn't excuse people to use the word.
ReplyDeleteGreat. Insult someone for having an opinion.
ReplyDelete5.
ReplyDeleteThis thing, this thing is wrong all over. 'F***ot' is not used like the word 'loser or 'idiot' in America. We use those two words for that. The f word is used do discriminate homosexuals, plain and simple. They are beaten and then they are called that, they are spat at and then they are called that, they are KILLED and then they are called that.
Do you know the meanig of the word?
ReplyDelete"Faggot is an extremely offensive word for a homosexual (gay) man. This is word that has been used to make gay men ashamed of themselves because they're not "real men" and act like girl"
Im so done with these brainwashed idiots and their extreme "oppa didnt mean it" mentality...... there no excuse after dropping the F bomb under the context to trashing gay people
ReplyDeleteyou want to compare zico with Kanye??? owkeey..
ReplyDeleteQuuer is also quite offensive word to use btw.. Yes there are people who won't think it is but a lot of people do.
ReplyDeleteIt depends on where you grew up and lived, really. You'll be suprised on how many people use the term to describe somebody as a "idiot", though usually men use it.
ReplyDeleteSome people say that to rationalize their use of it. Usually teenagers who reference the south park episode.
ReplyDeleteYou really think Kanye is that clueless? He knows exactly what it means.
ReplyDeleteyeah, the U.S government is really stubborn with going into other territories >.<
ReplyDeleteThe thing is that you never was interested at certain parts of US history, if you had interest you would find tons of material about any issue. School is not the only place to study and learn. Say Hello to Internet.
ReplyDelete3. [+182, -55] Pathetic how people are witch hunting Zico without knowing any facts or evidences
ReplyDeleteOh the irony
Seems like k-fans are defending Zico on this matter when they seem to hate on any idols with ridiculous reasons like bad at singing or acting. I do not understand the logic they have.
ReplyDeleteYou guys seriously never heard people using "faggot" against "idiots"? Where do ya'll live?
ReplyDelete
