'The Heirs' idol actors receive favorable reviews

Article: ['The Heirs' Finale] The transformation of acting idols... there were no 'nuisance idols'

Source:
Sports Seoul via Naver

1. [+852, -43] Krystal, Park Hyungshik, Kang Min Hyuk all did great... Sad we won't be seeing Bona and Chanyoung again...

2. [+769, -38] Scriptwriter Kim said that she put all of the idols through a fair and square audition and chose them according to the roles they fit best. She specifically said that a lot of rookie actors tried out for the auditions but it was only those three who fit Bona, Myungsoo, and Chanyoung! I think it's okay to cast idols if they go through auditions like this, a hundred times better than idols who take lead roles without the talent for it.

3. [+633, -46] Hyungshik really pulled off the Myungsoo role well

4. [+499, -54] Krystal's English acting was on point

5. [+168, -10] Kang Min Hyuk always received favorable reviews since 'You Who Rolled In Unexpectedly', but Park Hyungshik and Krystal really took me off guard with how well they did!!! I, too, hated on idols for acting but they really did well ㅠㅠㅠ

6. [+175, -20] Didn't expect Park Hyungshik to act so well.

7. [+141, -7] Krystal's acting is still a bit sitcom style but she does well with grouchy/attitude dependent characters. Stupid~

8. [+135, -7] Krystal was awkward at first but improved a lot with the chemistry development with Kang Min Hyuk. Kang Min Hyuk did well as well as Park Hyungshik ㅋㅋ Kim Woo Bin, though... I really became his fan after this.

9. [+146, -18] I think they each had just the right amount of screentime to earn a good review. They wouldn't have done so well in lead roles.

10. [+108, -1] This drama proves that you can't stereotype idol actors and that all idols should be put through fair auditions before being cast.

  1. I've only seen her in Dream High, and TBQH, I was more so into her side-story than Suzy's. I didn't even care about Suzy in the drama because I was so caught up in IU's acting.

  2. LOL 2% ratings??...Even the idol infested music programs get higher than that.

    ReplyDelete
  3. The problem is that he choose projects that aren't really popular with the public. If he chose projects like Secret or Heirs than he probably wouldn't have any issues with ratings. But rom-coms, especially quirky rom-com don't really do well in Korea (except Hong Sisters dramas)

  4. 2. [+497, -36] Won't matter when they sell it off to Japan

That's actually very true... his dramas don't really work in Korea (that is nicely put) but I think they are warmly welcomed in China and Japan so the makers still make profits- honestly there is NO other reason they'd keep giving him lead roles (besides the money I mean) .
Also I am not sure if you can really say that he "drives every drama into the ground" when he is a pretty damn good actor (as aknowledged by Knetz if that means anything) that obviously doesn't know how to choose the right projects- commenter no.4 makes it sound like he chooses dramas with a good foundation to ruin them with his acting....

  5. They might cut down episodes, MBC has done this a lot in the past but KBS usually lets them finish their run. Cable networks do it a lot too

    ReplyDelete
  6. It's because they can sell this drama to Japan for big bucks. I don't understand why people hate on Jang Geun Suk's acting/ getting lead roles. I'm not a JGS fan, his personality is all kinds of crazy, but that doesn't change the fact he's a very charismatic young actor. He just picks shit drama's where he plays the same kind of flower boy role. I understand why he does it. It obviously works well with his fans but he has so much more potential, so much more talent and I wish he'd return to some more meaty roles.

    ReplyDelete
  7. nah they just cut it short. The same company produced Playful Kiss, the rating was baaad so they cut it from 20 eps to 16 eps but they still made a profit of it by selling online viewer-ships.

    ReplyDelete
  8. So reply which is a cable drama has 4 times the rating of PM which is a prime time drama.

But I just wanted to say that ratings are not everything. Their are tons of good dramas with poor ratings it's just sometimes luck. Like heirs would still be in the lower teen ratings if Secret was still airing. It only got number 1 after it's biggest competition went off air.

And I wanted to point out that despite low ratings I LOVEDDDD Love rain it was probably one of my favorite dramas that aired last year. It also had dismissal ratings but it was good. And that you have dramas like Moon/Sun with monstrous ratings yet it's horrible.

  9. when did i say "you" in there though. it was just a general blanket statement for something i see on nb all the time. stop putting words in MY mouth.

  10. Jang Geun Suk needs to take on different roles. I'm not saying to be like Lee Min Ho, but notice how Lee Min Ho was known for his "chaebol" (am I using that term the right way?) roles like in Boys Over Flowers, and now Heirs, but he's also strayed away from those roles and did roles like City Hunter and Faith.

I think that if he were to take on different roles where people can see him in a different light, his reputation as a Hallyu actor will be better in the eyes of Korea...

    Just my two cents...

    ReplyDelete
  11. I kind of get the feeling that it will do well in japan just because jang geun suk is in it.

    ReplyDelete
  12. When people say that I don't know if we are watching the same drama... the characters are quite different.

I really "Pretty Man" so far and I like how his character his growing, all the quirky moments and all... it's not a typical drama .-. much less typical than heirs.. ah! and i'm not his fan or anything.

  19. 10. [+37, -14] You'd think this was a cable drama with its viewer
ratings... It's on a week night at a prime time 10 pm slot, what's up
with their viewer ratings;; Even cable dramas record higher than that.

It shocking, really. I don't think anybody believed those ratings were even possible on a major channel in prime time.

  20. Then why did you reply to me in particular then huh? Why couldn't you have made it into a completely different, new comment? Was it necessary to reply to me in particular?

  22. I personally really like this drama. It's really light and fun, and doesn't get boring because of the different girls he has to conquer. It's sort of like a mini story every 2-3 episodes. Some moments are so WTF, but I love ittttt.

I love Reply 1994 sooo much, but it's causing me so much stress in my life (Who is the husband? Am I really Team Trash, or am I just jealous of Najeong ending up with Chilbong? Why is Bingeurae so cute? etc), and Pretty Man is good at helping me relax. Haha.

    ReplyDelete
  23. The problem with the drama is that it's all over the place. It started off very lighthearted but has now been bogged down with all the stuff with MaTe's character. Honestly, I'd rather just watch BoTong and David doing cute stuff and seeing them fall for each other because I'm basically just fast forwarding the show now.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I know but I'm just really excited for this out of no where subunit.

  25. OMG Sameeeee. I hated Moon that Embraces the Sun but I loveloveloved Love Rain so much.

  26. I actually have the complete opposite opinion in that I feel like JGS's character is boring while IU's character is the interesting one.

  27. Netizens always make dramatic and alarmist comments. If you take every comment from them at face value when it comes to politics, you'd think Korea would collapse tomorrow. But I understand that you are trying to infer from the small clues you have.

  28. That's why I said it depends of the case, for example, I don't think water should be privatize for any reason, in my country there were rumors about it and it sucks, because is water, but everything here is private now, it's crazy but again our state is weak

    ReplyDelete
  29. Okay, you just sounded bitter. And I don't even look at Youtube comments after the change but I go on NB often and every article of 2ne1 says how bad she is live which I agree she is unstable but her voice is amazingly unique and great to listen to on audio, same with Lee Hi(her voice live is stable though) both girls voices are gonna cause eargasms hopefully.

  30. I love boobs & legsDecember 13, 2013 at 4:19 PM

wow I feel so bad for IU.. she took the role thinking it was a good chance while having Red Shoes promotion and preparing her solo concert, but the rating is sooo bad...

    ReplyDelete
  31. I'm pretty sure everyone is already used to their visuals...so its not a shock. I would understand if its a new debute. GD&Top don't match, they both have different styles and look different too but they had a sub unit. This sub unit will most likely be not performance based so literally it won't be hard to just sit there and sing..plus they're going fot a theme which they will follow so thats where the visu will match.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I'm sorry but these haircuts are 100% uglier than his long hair. Not that the long hair actually looks good on him. Kdrama haircuts are so silly looking. They had So Ji sub looking like the yeti in Master's Sun. Why would you cut a guys hair so that his head looks like it's shaped like the Alien? I don't get it. The only time I've seen JGS in anything that he looked like a grown man and not an idiot was in the movie Crazy Waiting when his head was shaved.

  33. i can't wait if it's bom and hayi then this christmas we'll be having a special treat ^^ i think they're both amazing vocals and will make an incredible rendition of a loved song also i think their logo is cute especially when it spins on the teaser video like a music box <3 can't wait the mv will be again amazing and hooray for yg striking a deal with samsung ^^

  35. She can't even smile!

  36. Itaewon Homicide is a perfect example of how well he can do when he breaks out of pretty boy mode. I thought he was very creepy in that film. Dramas are the problem. Most dramas don't really give an actor much room to actually act. The characters in dramas are often so narrowly drawn there is little to do other than stick to a standard set of rules. It's no wonder that sometimes an especially charming actor/actress will come along and make a big splash because they have a natural charm that shines through. JGS is a competent actor but he doesn't have that something special that can turn a standard Kdrama part into something unique.

Using the media to cover government issues is the oldest trick in the book, good to see the netizens react to the bullshit like this.

  41. It's not as bad as it's being made out to be. It's not my fav but it's also not the worst I've seen by far.

It's supposed to be campy but I think it was a bad role choice for Jang Geun Suk because the vain pretty boy image is too similar to the opinion a lot of people have of him in real life. It feeds his detractors.

IMO, he's a good actor but he needs to get back to choosing more serious roles that will show that talent rather than picking these fluffy flower boy parts.

TBS... since he's did choose to play it, I think whoever cast Lee Jang Woo as the 2nd male lead should be fired. JGS is a nice-looking guy but LJW is a particularly fine specimen of a man so the line gets real blurry as to who someone might think is the "prettiest man" is in this drama.

    ReplyDelete
  42. The drama isn't bad, I am actually enjoying the story line. It's not the best, but not the worst. I'm thinking the viewers are tired of JGS taking on these roles.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I see what you're saying but lee minho went back to the chaebol role after faith flopped, at least we can all say jang geun seuk is not afraid of his dramas flopping considering his last 3 dramas

Of all korean F4s, I've noticed that you're beautiful's has had the hardest time getting a hit after the drama ended and sunkyungkwan scandal's has been the most successful because no matter if their drama flops or not they decided not to do another "teenage" drama

    ReplyDelete
  44. I am enjoying David and Bo Tong scenes, they're really cute.

    ReplyDelete
  45. I read that KBS sold the rights to like 10 different countries. His popularity is larger in other countries.

    ReplyDelete
  46. I have to agree. Sometimes ratings doesn't equal a badly written drama. All About My Romance is a favorite of mine, but it didn't do that well. It's all about luck.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's based on a manga, they didn't come up this themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  48. OCN cut episodes of Virus this year due to the ratings

    ReplyDelete
  49. let's be honest here. jang geun seuk only ever plays himself in a drama or movie.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Minho isn't the reason for that drama's fail though. I heard it was the story line.

    ReplyDelete
  51. yes same, i ended up skipping most of the suzy-taecyeon parts (even though i love them) because her and wooyoung were just
    -cries a river-

    ReplyDelete
  52. she's really cute in this drama

    ReplyDelete
  53. JGS needs to go back to dramas similar to Beethoven Virus, more mature and with interesting plots

such a shame because in the past he has proved to be a good actor

    ReplyDelete
  54. he looks so different he smiles! this is like my fav pic of him haha

    ReplyDelete
  55. They usually don't pre shoot korean dramas unless it's a really big production with guaranteed sponsors and investors or sometimes, if it's a historical drama and they need to go somewhere far to shoot. Normally, they shoot a few, start airing, then continue shooting while the drama is airing. Sometimes they would film it today and air it the next day or a few days later so there's a lot of stress about that. Sometimes dramas do get canceled, but very rarely. 99% of the time a drama is canceled is if an accident happened to the main lead(s) and they can't shoot anymore but the drama is still airing. That happened last year with a historical drama. They got into so many accidents like several car accidents and a horse accident I think. They canceled the drama completely cuz I think more than 4 actors/actresses were hospitalized for serious injuries.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Jang Geun Suk is not cute.. the other guy is way better looking

    ReplyDelete
  57. Idols don't give drama rating the help sell the drama to other countries. Like now flop or no flop sukie might win popular actor and then his drama is definitely going to be big in Japan as he is really popular there (More than in Korea)

    ReplyDelete
  58. Stormy lovers a 100+ episode daily drama got caught to like 60 episodes with no ending just cut

  59. [+547, -284] We have to watch IU's bad acting again? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Her acting makes my hands and toes curl

i watched 3 episodes of the drama and her acting was good.i mean she did well and there wasnt a seen that the acting didnt look legit. what exactly are these people watching?.

also i almost died laughing at the scene where she washed her mouth with his tooth brush.

its honestly a good drama but JGS plot line is a bit boring. i love IUs part.

    ReplyDelete
  60. forgive me your majesty for my sins

    ReplyDelete
  61. Jang Geun Suk should stop doing kdrama's and start doing jdrama's, since he's so hated in korea plus all of his drama's are all made to export oversea like Japan anyways

    ReplyDelete
  62. IMO, this drama is actually a lot better than the Heirs. I mean, it's got an actual plot. :)
Just a side note, but IU's acting is actually REALLY good.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  65. 3. [+547, -284] We have to watch IU's bad acting again? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ Her acting makes my hands and toes curl

Ummm...is she talking about the same IU here? Haven't watched the drama yet but I have watched 'You're the best Lee Soon Shin'. No she's not the best actor but her acting skills are pretty good for someone who is a singer first and foremost (compared to other idol actors) & I can see her becoming an even better actor.Honestly if i didn't know she was a singer I'd definitely believe she was only and actor.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I think about it.

    ReplyDelete
  67. JGS remind me of GD, wonder if they're long lost sibling...

    ReplyDelete
  68. Can't wait for this combi , older generation + new gen

    Holy dancing duo

  69. naaahh, no one can surpass BYJ even at this moment (which i think is crazy, I mean, How old is winter sonata already???) in the last Japan-Korean Drama awards, Best Korean actor, JGS who active in Japan came on 3rd place after BYJ and Yoochun. the drama (you're beautiful) also 3rd place after winter sonata & rooftop prince. (even though yoochun & rooftop prince "mysteriously" missing from the awards nomination like few days before the deadline *cough*dirtyplay*cough*).
JYJ is still big in japan, so JGS biggest contender is actually yoochun.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Maybe it's just me? I find IU's acting good.

    ReplyDelete
  71. I am having fun watching PM. Iu is so funny. The character suits her. Jks, no need to elaborate, he is a great actor who could make you feel annoyed, happy or sad about his character. But i will also be wathing heirs after pm. Would want to see it myself if decide if it really is good or not.

  77. I feel the pain of privatising things. Everything here is so pro capitalism no one cares in reality it would cost less if it were public. People go crazy at 'raising taxes' not realizing that.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Really? I didn't hear about that. I think he had an office job but then he was asked to transfer to the celebrity department.... that's what i remember but idk if it was a comment or article :/

    ReplyDelete

I'm in my last year of HS but I just found out about privatization..... that is a bit sad :( but oh well at least I know now ^_^.... and yeah I'm in the same boat as you I guess because all my teachers are like "OHMYGOD uni is going to be uber hard and like your profs are gonna be douches and not care etc".... gah not excited for next year TT_TT

  81. not necessarily... if there was a suspicion of prostitution idols would be just as likely as actors... it's really hard to become a trainee not to mention debut!

    ReplyDelete
  82. No he's not. From what I know he was rejected to do active duty because of his health. But he managed to get to do active duty by checking to doctor for health advice or something like that. A few months after he enlisted, he was transferred to celebrity department because he was asked to do a musical.
I might wrong about this but one thing for sure from the first place he wanted to do active duty and it's not in celebrity department

    ReplyDelete
  83. NO South Korea... dont go the same path as Philippines.. everything is privatized here electricity, toll ways, trains, water utility.. the price keeps on climbing it rarely/never goes down.. They should think of the welfare of the people first before money.

I think he was her sponsor and as they where caught by the media they said it's dating to do damage control.

  87. If it's so, I would love it!!! Lee Hi and Park Bom together for christmas, happy christmas!!!

    ReplyDelete
  88. WOW well then some men must really have respect for Taec since he was born in the US but gave up his citizenship, no many ppl especially idols would do that :)

    ReplyDelete
  89. didn't he get rejected for his back problems?
and yeah i don't really know what happened since it wasn't a big deal up till then what a celebrity recruit did as long as they didn't make so many scandals.... like rain :/

  95. Not to be a cynic - but around the time Jay Park scandal, & he left the group, things turned sour for 2pm particularly Taec, for reasons i can't quite remember - netziens blamed him for some shit to do with Jay & he got dumbed on for everything.
People took particular bitterness to the fact that "he was making money from Korea, but cos he was American he wouldn't serve in the army" He was really hated for awhile - so he gave up his American citzenship, & said he would serve in the Army. But THAT wasn't enough, cos he had bad eyes or something he was considered fit enough to be public officer - which pissed people off some more ....THEN he said that he would serve active duty, dispite friends and families opposititon to it. Which seem to subdue his critics....
Announcing several years early that he would serve active duty i think is to silence those critics for good....but also to gain public favour.

    ReplyDelete
  96. I'm 16, I feel the same way whenever I see someone my age debut, lol.

I just have to find my own way, just like they found their own way. :)

  97. When I first saw it it thought they were gonna wear only bras or something but then i remembered that they obviously aren't going to use a Swedish word =P But it was funny at first.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Yeah i heard of that, i think it was because Taec and Jay were both from the US and some international and domestic fans felt like he out of all the members should have defended Jay till the end but they instead let him go and since Taec and Nichkhun were the face of the group they were the most attacked.... The army stuff that u said i heard it also...but even then, all of that could have eventually died down with the help of the company and positive promotions, imo if Taec went as far as this it was for himself not just to show the critics and the public something.

    ReplyDelete
  99. For himself, yes.....I'm mean his career is pretty much set. He will be seen as a hero & will be greatly respected. That is a massive turn round from where he was only a couple of years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Agreed, and he has never seemed like someone who does things without thinking and everyone around him talks good about him and his habits... he reminds me of a just a well behaved kid who you can't help but like his dorkiness... and he is not even my bias lol

    ReplyDelete
  101. Oh yeah, who is your bias then?

    ReplyDelete
  102. Because there two types of net users - adults & kids. Adults dont bother themselves or take issues that dont affect their "real lives" seriously like celeb A is dating celeb B and those kind of news. When people say they hate Knetz, they should say they hate school children Knetz who are generally dumb
