Did A Pink's composer plagiarize SES?

Article: A Pink 'without Hong Yookyung', is their song a plagiarism of senior group S.E.S. or a dedication to them?

Source: TV Report via Nate

Article talks about how people have been comparing A Pink's 'No No No' to SES's 'Just In Love'.

1. [+634, -36] When I first heard the song, I immediately thought of SES... ㅋㅋ I knew a plagiarism controversy would come up... A Pink's song is so similar that anyone who liked SES's songs will think  of it the moment they hear A Pink's

2. [+491, -32] I thought there was something wrong with my ears with how similar I thought they sounded

3. [+125, -13] No wonder I kept thinking of SES when I heard it ㅎㅎ I just thought they had a similar concept to SES

4. [+63, -8] I thought I heard A Pink's 'No No No' somewhere... after thinking about it, it was SES's 'Just In Love'

5. [+58, -7] Since I'm not a professional, I'm not in any position to be calling it plagiarism or not but it does sound really similar

6. [+46, -15] Oh yeah, I forgota bout that Hong Yookyung incident... With this plagiarism controversy now, I'm not liking them all too much ㅋ

7. [+36, -8] I guess I wasn't the only one who thought this

8. [+35, -1] No wonder they're winning #1 on music shows, it'd be weird if they weren't considering they stole one of SES's best choruses.

    i like you netz

  3. Late news but yes, I think the songs are really similar, to the point of plagiarism. Shinsadong is known for that anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  4. the first thought that came to my mind when I listened to Apink's new single was it sounded like an SES song.

    ReplyDelete
  5. yup like 4minute's volume up

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=civoj4k0WyY

    ReplyDelete
  6. God dammit, Shinsadong, get your shit together

    ReplyDelete
  7. Well the song the SES song will get more views and recognition (something positive). However if this is plagiarized hop the producer gets what he deserve.

    ReplyDelete
  8. Right from the intro of SES's song I could hear the similarity. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xXqowNQ27nQ

    ReplyDelete
  9. I finished watching Reply 1997 and it was just funny to me how Eunji, who was in the drama centred around these old school idol groups, came out with this song that sounded like it came from SES lol

  10. "5. [+58, -7] Since I'm not a professional, I'm not in any position to be calling it plagiarism or not but it does sound really similar"

One knetz is having a better life now.

    ReplyDelete
  11. Apink always give off that SES old school idol vibe to me
Hopefully they settle this. It would suck for them to lose their rising momentum because of this

    ReplyDelete
  12. the chorus sounds like a sped up version of ses's song

a-pink in general seems to have songs that sound really dated. they have that standard bubblegum pop sound that was popular 10+ years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  13. always trying to catch up to Brave Brothers

    ReplyDelete
  14. My My sounded like SES without the plagerism. That song really gives off a nostalgic 90s kpop feel. Loved that song

    ReplyDelete
  15. plagiarism or not they still rank really high on music chart, this make me think whats up with 4minute 'what your name' and a pink 'nonono' this year, they rank really high for a long time, and a pink is just debut in 2011.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Both songs are not to my taste anyways.

    ReplyDelete
  17. My my was also similar to SES's I'm your girl. I remember I said this same thing on their yt channel and they deleted my comment lol

    ReplyDelete
  18. the refrain is very similar, there is no way you can deny it.

    ReplyDelete
  19. yeah when i listen to Apink, it really does remind me of the type of pop music that was popular back then. But i guess thats the angle they've intended to have and it might work for them since we often hear a number of kpop fans and netizens complain about the type of music girl groups make today and how the old school style of girl groups was gold to them.

    ReplyDelete
  20. wow a popular song from my country

    ReplyDelete
  21. oh wow that is so obvious

    ReplyDelete
  22. [+46, -15] Oh yeah, I forgota bout that Hong Yookyung incident... With this plagiarism controversy now, I'm not liking them all too much ㅋ
It saddens me to read that. It's not the girls fault but they pay for that... I'm not even a Pink Panda but it saddens me :s

  23. itunes said they released this song on Mar 20, 2012. Volume Up was released on April 9 according to wiki.

idk if it's plagiarism. the dates seem to close. they probably sampled the same thing.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Even tho I don't like mellow songs, my my chorus was catchy and they look pretty~
Tho during the break down, there was that guy voice and I just want him to shut up because it was so out of place....:|

    ReplyDelete
  25. oh wow I didn't knew that till now o.o

    ReplyDelete
  26. I think the songs sound alike as well

    ReplyDelete
  27. s. tiger BOUGHT the rights to the saxophone sample that both this song and 'Volume Up' used. he didn't plagiarize anything in this situation.

    ReplyDelete
  28. This sample is VERY old. I have a dance CD from the early 1999 that uses that Saxophone melody. Almost every DJ has used this lol. The reason that I can think that S tiger used it was because it was very famous as a Dance Anthem so it brings back 90s dance nostalgia.

    ReplyDelete
  29. the song is composed by the composer and apink bought it. so the one who blame is both of them.. because the composer still receives money from that song and how can apink not knowing the fact that it does sound similar with SES? SES is superior sunbae for them.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Technically it's not Apink's but Shinsadong's fault but Apink will get all the blame *sigh* but why must Yookyung come up? Most K-netizens forgot all about that until the journalist brought it back up again. It's clear that she or he wanted to stir a negative response... :/

    ReplyDelete
  31. WTF! it really does sound the same. Idk, but SES is somewhat slow tempo.
BTW, if its plagiarism? Who will sue the composer, is it SM?? Or the composer who composed the Just in Love of SES only??

    ReplyDelete
  32. well, you know media people. They all twist everything. :)

    ReplyDelete
  33. Now I'm so sure that the song indeed is similar with Just In Love...
The melody also reminds me of SES' s Dreams Come True (forgot the name of the song, forgive me i i'm wrong.. but there's another song from SES which has quite similar as well).

    ReplyDelete
  34. WOW! did not know about this :O
    such bullshit -_-

    ReplyDelete
  35. true. the saxophone part reminds me of songs from the 80s lol like george michael

    ReplyDelete
  36. Everything about this is plagiarized.
    The Article.
    The words.
    The letters.
    The print.
    The internet.
Can someone tell me on this planet what has not been already redone by nature or by man? LOL

    Load of bollocks.
A-Pink's song is cool. SES's song is cool.
Everything I'm typing now is cool and plagiarised!

    ReplyDelete
  37. OMG! It sound somewhat the same. Anyways, I still like A Pink.

    ReplyDelete
  38. No No No is doing well on the charts so the style seems to be working for them. I personally don't like that type of music but it does let them stand out in today's kpop market.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I know but it's annoying. Lately the journalists make so many idols get into controversies and ruin them for life... it's scary sometimes.

    ReplyDelete
  40. The song is not plagiarized. Similar sound =/= plagiarism.

If anyone sued them, they will harshly lose.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Same with that group named after an island new song sound like Aly & Aj, potential breakup song

    ReplyDelete
  42. They will all get sued.
It will drag out for years.
Both sides will have spent countless amounts for bullshit that should have never started.

    ReplyDelete
  43. the rhythm sound similar.. except Just in love start off much more energetic, but nonono is mellow throughout.. even the little break in the beginning is similar. Just in Love goes up and down like a roller coaster ride while no no no is like a mellow and stable throughout the song like the merry-go-round ride.

    ReplyDelete
  44. Give the lawyers some job and money to grab. :)

    ReplyDelete
  45. SES (and their songs) will always be more known than A-Pink in korea.
The popularity of A-Pink and their songs is nothing compared to SES.

I'm not a hater A-Pink, but say "Well the song the SES song will get more views and recognition" while SES is more popular and legendary.

    sorry for my english ^^"

    ReplyDelete
  46. I dont have anything to said about this, just wait and see how everything goes....-____-

    ReplyDelete
  47. It does sounds similar tho. I have heard the comparison. Especially on the chorus. On the other note, why are people hating on them instead? The song was made by Shinsadong so hate on him. Oh and the Hong Yookyung issue, blame acube for it. It's not like apink was the one who have to make the decision. They can only follow the company's order.

    ReplyDelete
  48. it's like Shinee and 'Dream Girl' all over again

    ReplyDelete
  49. Oh oops my mistake, I already know SES is famous in Korea (i've seen it). I meant recognition internationally. There are tons of new kpop fans who don't know who SES are so internationally they'll get more recognition.

    ReplyDelete
  50. There are rules about plagiarism. And i hope we just leave this kind of issue with those rules and music experts to judge it :)

    ReplyDelete
  51. the one that should be blame is s.tiger coz he is one that produced this song... i know acube will learn from this issue..

    ReplyDelete
  52. the funny things is Apink NoNoNo doing well in charts after the controversy... even no 2 in instiz after 3 weeks...

    ReplyDelete
  53. Omg that's exactly what I was about to write >_<

    ReplyDelete
  54. Or brown eyed girls "cleansing cream" and Lily Allen's "littlest things"

    ReplyDelete
  55. they have not been #3 or #2 in melon the hole 3 week, they get up there after the controversy(they star get up there form like the nd of last week), trust me I have been watching the charts

    ReplyDelete
  56. carrot♔semi-hiatusJuly 25, 2013 at 5:38 PM

Lol-ing at your down votes. I mean, when I first heard it I thought it was going to be "WOW AMAZINGLY THE SAME WITH EVERYTHING" but I ended up with a "Meh" instead.
Yeah they sound similar but it's not like the Shinsadong Tiger copied and pasted the song and made it A Pink's.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I think what people would be upset about is the fact that it made it sound like because of them the song will be recognized when SES is better known and more popular in general.

    ReplyDelete
  58. just like every queen who doesn't biased on hwayoung still like t-trash. same

    ReplyDelete
  59. Ooh didn't think about that it's my bad. I didn't mean it in that way at all. I just didn't formulate right.

    ReplyDelete
  60. heeeeere we go again -_-

    ReplyDelete
  61. Ahaha You mean TAHITI's 'Love Sick'? It does sound similar to Aly & AJ's song, but I don't think it's plagiarism

    ReplyDelete
  62. 6. [+46, -15] Oh yeah, I forgota bout that Hong Yookyung incident...
With this plagiarism controversy now, I'm not liking them all too much ㅋ

blame the one that compose the song dammit....

    ReplyDelete
  63. Maybe he bought the rights for 'Just in love' too, IMO recycling music is not good for his image as a producer

    ReplyDelete
  64. people who agree to blame only the composer and the company is like admitting that the idol is merely just a tool.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Aren't they in this situation then? It's not like they get to pick the song at most cases? They are trained and they have to eat whatever is fed to them by the company whether they like it or not (in most cases).
Although the word "tool" sounds harsh but when it comes to situations like this they kind of are...

    ReplyDelete
  66. Wasn't there some kind of plagiarism controversy with the debut song for EXID that Shinsadong Tiger wrote?

    ReplyDelete
  67. I remember reading an article when they first debuted saying they want to have a pure image like ses. I guess their company really means that

    ReplyDelete
  68. wonder why its coming up again..netz have been comparing the songs right frm day 1 of release...well,they do sound similar..well,s.tiger is known for 'sampling' the easiest of tunes..still,the nostalgic in me is very much in love with the original...

    ReplyDelete
  69. no he didn't do that, it was clear from the beginning that 'volume up' used a sample. But in A Pink's case it's a copy

    ReplyDelete
  70. S.E.S 'Just in love' was better!

    ReplyDelete
  71. It's right, Shin Sa Dong Tiger produces the song but since APink doesn't has big fandom yet, they dont huv fans to defend them. good luck on them.

    ReplyDelete
  72. holy crap wtf----

    ReplyDelete
  73. Yes with Whoz That Girl lol

    ReplyDelete
  74. It's not just "similar" sounds though. If you slowed down the pace for A Pink's song, it will sound like SES's song.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's not their fault, it's more about composer and their agency's fault

    ReplyDelete
  76. Now that you brought that up, A Pink did mention that they looked up to SES which /is/ odd they'd plagiarize.. but I think most artists have very little say to which songs that can use...

    ReplyDelete
  77. lol no
i am sure they charted at top 3 on melon for at least first few days
it only fell down to 5~8 because of 2NE1,BEG,and some others new song

    ReplyDelete
  78. its best to say, the composer is INSPIRED or INFLUENCED not PLAGIARIZED , it very different you know.. *haha, sorry for the caps, just want to make it obvious.. XD

    ReplyDelete
  79. It does sound similar but like one netizen said, I'm not a professional and there are certain guidelines that need to be met before a song is considered plagiarized. Anyway I really hope the song isn't plagiarized, and hopefully this won't hurt their image but the composer's.

    ReplyDelete
  80. dontknowdontcareJuly 25, 2013 at 8:18 PM

it saddens me that apink are the ones they blame for this :'( i'm really starting to love these girls :'(

but, must admit both songs do sound similar

    ReplyDelete
  81. People are so quick to jump on plagiarism accusations, but in reality there are only so many combination of chords that are pleasing to the human ear. After thousands of years of music making, some repetition is inevitable. Which is why the industry has rules and formulas for determining if something is truly plagiarism, not just "it sounds kind of similar".

    ReplyDelete
  82. i'm not from SES era not even a kpop fan back then.. so i don't have the right to judge.. No No No is a really cute song.. i like the song and the choreo.. bonus point is the fact that they go for cute/innocent concept instead of sexy slutty concept like others..

    ReplyDelete
  83. Did you really need to be that ignorant and use "slutty" to slut-shame other groups just to praise your favorites? smh.

    ReplyDelete
  84. A-pink.....hmm,,,,

    ReplyDelete
  85. Just another netizenJuly 25, 2013 at 9:09 PM

It does sound familiar but, if the chords aren't the same then it can't really be called plagiarism...it was probably HEAVILY influenced by SES...cause' well...pop-music can only go so far...a lot of pop songs use the same 4 chords...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOlDewpCfZQ

    ReplyDelete
  86. My My is like the only Apink song I like. And I agree that that song reminded me of SES that's why I like it -__-

    ReplyDelete
  87. it is not like yookyung's appa is gonna make a big hooha...plagiarism is none of her appa's business

    ReplyDelete
  88. That does not mean it's plagiarized. Do some research first before making any comments.

Not even a Pink Panda, but this whole thing is ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Apink is not my favourite girl group tho.. and what should i use the term for girls who take off their skirts on stage, wearing super short short? sexy classy? duh

    ReplyDelete
  90. Sexy would have been fine itself, you didn't need to go as far as using the word "slut" because it does not even have anything to do with looking sexy.

    ReplyDelete
  91. How is it ridiculous? You're just in denial. The songs are no doubt the same, just in different pace to sound of course, "different".

    ReplyDelete
  92. yeah...they rank #3 when the song first released.. :D then fallin because other artists... happy for them :D

    ReplyDelete
  93. Just pulled up Just In Love and yea, its pretty similar. Since Apink's known as a group the does a lot of old school kpop of course people are going to pull the plagiarism card even faster.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It sooooo is, jammin' to it right now.

    ReplyDelete
  95. What? lol, ridiculous. You don't have to be a professional to give an opinion on something. Kinda like you can say a person can't act or dance or sing without being an actor, dancer, or singer yourself.

    ReplyDelete
  96. 1. [+634, -36] When I first heard the song, I immediately thought of SES... ㅋㅋ I knew a plagiarism controversy would come up... A Pink's song is so similar that anyone who liked SES's songs will think of it the moment they hear A Pink's

ahh this. i immediately thought about that SES song too. it's like the case of BEG's"cleansing cream" and a lily allen song "littlest things", so alike.

    ReplyDelete
  97. It's similar in some notes. But to call it as plagiarism, mmm...I don't think so. :/
This song is made by Shinsadong Tiger, right? He is my favorite composer...T_T

    ReplyDelete
  98. Doesn't matter to me if the song is the same or not, what's important is I like it and I enjoy listening to it.

    ReplyDelete
  99. apink is like.. ses song+finkl voice
imo, eun ji's high note is kindof similar to ock joo hyun

    ReplyDelete
  100. This kind of news just makes apink more popular in korea.

    ReplyDelete
  101. If its in different pace then it's different.

    ReplyDelete
  102. but if you praise A pink, or an artitst for having a good song and win, general people will just praise A Pink and not even remember about the composer right? that's how it works

    ReplyDelete
  103. God please don't blame these girls, blame the composer

    ReplyDelete
  104. S.E.S Dreams come true is actually a cover of a Finnish song.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OHwRoRB6u_0

    ReplyDelete
  105. So true!!! I think i'vme heard mymy somewhere... Ohhh so it was ses' im your girl

    ReplyDelete
  106. I heard about two bar or 'two' something similar/identical so we can called a song plagiarized another song.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I've never listened to APink before because, personally im not a big fan of overtly cute concepts but when this plagiarize issue came out i was curious and checked out "no no no" and now im weirdly addicted to that song. haha. Its so catchy. If it is indeed Plagiarized then maybe SES's company will sue.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Btw i saw the live performance for this song and the fanchats were SO Loud, and it wasn't the usual fangirls voice i heard, but fanboys!! I've listened to many Girl Idol's live performance, and the fanchats are usually dominated by girls voice but i was pleasantly surprised by the Fanboys.lol. Good to see APink gaining popularity.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Puhleese...have u seen ock's musical? Ock>>>>>>>>>>>eunji...

    ReplyDelete
  110. Denial? Lol. Please don't tell me I have to draw out a paragraph to explain the specifics and details to you. You can't be serious. Ask anyone with a musical or music editing background.

    ReplyDelete
  111. It doesn't really sound that alike to me :S

    ReplyDelete
  112. No, i mean in term of singing style, not quality wise

    ReplyDelete
  113. fuck of those plagiarism issues. even since day 1, they are inspired by old kpop groups like SES and finkl and so on. no matter how much haters try to bring apink down, it does not change the fact that nonono is doing well in charts. haters

    ReplyDelete
  114. even though you guys are crying out for them to be sued, does it matter if SES company does not even care to talk about it lol bring it on

    ReplyDelete
  115. I'm not a fan, but the girls of A-Pink are fun to watch, so when I saw the live of S.E.S.'s I'm Your Girl, I couldn't help but remember this

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x64Tp8NssOM

That choreography at 4:15 that they changed because the official said that it "looked weird". I think it looks rather similar xD

    ReplyDelete
  116. Different pace but same sound, so no it's not.

    ReplyDelete
  117. Where did I ever mention that it was A Pink's fault? Many of my comments referred to the composer only, so go get your facts straight.

    ReplyDelete
  118. I don't need to see anyone else's comments because it's only you I'm speaking of. You seemed steadfast in putting this blame with absolutely no knowledge of music at all. Or what even constitutes as plagiarism.

So no, you get your facts straight and inform yourself properly before stating accusations.

    ReplyDelete
  119. I can't believe you + 14 people are really uncapable of interpreting such a simple comment.

Instead of going on and saying shit about A Pink, the netizen was neutral by saying that it does sound similar, but he/she wouldn't accuse A Pink of plagiarism because he/she has no musical knowledge for that. I don't know if you're aware but the fact that 2 songs sounds similar don't necessarily mean that one is plagiarizing the other. There are some conditions for a song to be considered a real plagiarism.

I don't even imagine how do you got to this brilliant conclusion that he/she meant to say "don't give your opinion if you're not a professional", especially because the netizen says at the end "it does sounds similar" AND THIS IS AN OPINION, he's just choosing to not got ahead and accuse A Pink of plagiarism, just that.

    ReplyDelete
  120. Hmmm see who else's? I said many of /MY/ comments. Reread what I said before stating some random rambling. Wow, please, enlighten me with your knowledge then. Stop acting like you know more than everyone else.

    ReplyDelete
  121. well they've been emulating them for a long time..even came forward and said their concept is of those of 90s idols..

    ReplyDelete
  122. And I can't believe you're incapable* of comprehending the problem with that comment. Again, they're stating they're not in a position to accuse A Pink of plagiarism BECAUSE they're not a professional. But whether something is plagiarized or not has nothing to do with being a professional, anyone can make that claim and be right about it. And anyone can have musical knowledge without being a professional. On top of that, it can also be an opinion because we don't know if whoever produced the song has used it without permission or not. That's literally all it takes to know to accuse someone of plagiarism. It's not that hard to grasp. Simply put, their reason for not accusing A Pink of plagiarism was stupid.

    ReplyDelete
  123. i think this case similar with after school blue's case.. After School Blue Accused of Plagiarizing Hyori’s Former Band Fin.K.L
    FOREVER LOVE > WONDER BOY

    ReplyDelete
