YG prepares Lee Hi for her Japanese advancement

Article: [Exclusive] YG Yang Hyun Suk specially orders Lee Hi Japanese lessons 'why?'

Source: OSEN via Nate [allkpop article here]

1. [+155, -11] I really don't understand why an article like this is considered 'exclusive'

2. [+158, -17] I'm a longtime YG fan but it's really unsettling for me to see YG media play once a day like this every day...

3. [+129, -12] Another 'exclusive', shouldn't it be obvious by now? He's obviously planning her Japanese advancement

4. [+39, -7] Lee Hi doesn't have a chance in Japan. They're going to be judging her by her visuals first and she's not going to get anywhere with a face that looks like Park Kyung Lim.

5. [+39, -2] I'm pretty sure 2NE1 fans are beginning to understand now why Big Bang fans hated 2NE1 so much when they first debuted...

6. [+37, -6] I don't hate Lee Hi but... seriously? Sigh...

7. [+28, -2] First YG tried to media play Lee Hi by linking her up with Busker Busker... but her song is barely contending with a song that's been out for a year ㅋㅋ and she's only barely sold 1,000 copies of her album so far ㅋㅋ Busker's debut album sold over 100,000 copies. Busker Busker is a wall that Lee Hi can never climb over, and YG and Lee Hi's fans need to understand that loud and clear. Never ever try to media play them as anything comparable again ㅋㅋ Lee Hi is just another rookie in the sea. And if YG tries to make Lee Hi piggy back on Big Bang for her Japanese advancement,... well, I trust that they know what Big Bang fans will react with.

8. [+26, -11] Lee Hi will never make it, hasn't IU been example enough? She's talented and already established a strong fandom base in Korea before her advancement and yet she did worse than any other dance idol in Japan. The Japanese music market doesn't judge on just talent alone, you have to have a cute or pretty face for them to go 'kawaii~' and show interest. Lee Hi is quiet and reserved, her singing won't carry her far in Japan.

9. [+26, -11] Yang Hyun Suk is seriously diseased with an Lee Hi obsession... Big Bang's Daesung is sweeping the Oricon charts, selling out his albums, plus his Japanese nationwide tour offer from avex and not one damn article about all these achievements while Lee Hi gets the most trivial things put out ㅡㅡ; Instead Yang Hyun Suk's sitting around with Lee Hi saying she's advancing into America, into Japan... This has to be a disease ㅡㅡ

10. [+24, -3] I think Lee Hi's fans are blind because I see them going around commenting that Lee Hi will be hit with instant success in America ㅋㅋ And whenever I see YG put out articles with 'exclusives', I really don't see a difference between him and Kwang Soo. He will obviously make Lee Hi piggy back on Big Bang's name, just like how he cut Big Bang's stage time to make 2NE1 piggy back on them ㅋㅋ And by the way, next time you media play, don't you dare put Busker Busker's name next to Lee Hi as if they're the same level. Just the digital sales alone means they're nowhere near the same anything ㅋㅋ

Article: [Exclusive] YG Yang Hyun Suk orders three months of special Japanese lessons for Lee Hi

Source: OSEN via Naver

1. [+583, -50] Send Lee Hi to America, not Japan...

2. [+499, -33] Japanese exchange students say that Lee Hi's style won't work in Japan... 2NE1 didn't work out either because they had such a strong image

3. [+443, -16] As if sending the Big Bang hyungs over there wasn't enough, you're sending Hi there too? It hasn't even been that long since she debuted.. Just leave her alone.

4. [+443, -36] Send her to America or England. Doesn't her vocals match better over there?

5. [+418, -47] Park Jimin would be jealous of this article

  2. Meh never speak too soon. Maybe Japan likes her, maybe now. who knows.

and the whole "using BB to get the others out there" thing... I don't get it.
All the companies do that. Recent example: TTS helping promote EXO.

And of course he's gonna use BIGBANG, they're his most successful group. He used SE7EN to get them out there too.

  5. yeah i've been wondering why yg doesn't advertise daesung's Actual Tangible Success in japan. he seems butthurt that the ones that aren't his favorites do better than his biases like lee hi.. he's so embarrassing ugh

  6. I really like Lee Hi. But I hate reading any article about her. She's good, yeah... but not that good.

    ReplyDelete
  7. She needs to strengthen her base in Korea first.
Ehh I don't believe this article

  8. I'm just sitting here going all 'NUUUUUUUUUU'

Sure, she's got talent to boot, but.. it's too soon. Let her promote in Korea in the meantime.

  9. YG why ould you do that I love lee hi, but shes not going to make it so soon. Just focus on making sure 2ne1 comes back when you said

  10. Slightly off topic, but I hate it when people generalize the Japanese music industry like this. There are many artists in Japan who are nowhere near what would be considered "kawaii" or even good-looking, and are still successful because of their music. The only ones who rely heavily on their looks are the ones who have no musical talent, like most gravure idols. If some Korean idols don't make it in Japan, it's not because of their looks or their image, but because they don't offer anything new. Of course looks can help them, but only to maintain the fad for a while.

  11. I don't think Lee hi is going to be fluent in Japanese in about three months.....And they should stop media playing now....It's gotten old

    ReplyDelete
  12. well kpop in japan really depends on the hallyu fad, so you can't really blame them for saying that. japan has a wide variety in their music market indeed but they're probably going to treat people like iu or lee hi as "just another korean idol".

    ReplyDelete
  13. All of the crap that netizens spout about Japan, their artist livelihood lies heavily in Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  14. I think that Lee Hi is adorable and she can sing, but she lacks presence as a performer. I think she needs to spend at least 2 years in Korea after this album before heading to Japan. Everybody is sending these rookies to Japan to make money, but they need to stay in Korea and work on their craft before trying to scrape cash into their pockets overseas.

By the way, where is that new 2NE1 album.....if I don't see some teasers or hear some news soon, I'm gonna need to have a talk with YG. This shit ain't cool.

  18. it's a good move cause japan digital sales is ex compared to cheapskate korea. all those nugus idols rather spend their time over at japan than toiling worthlessly over in korea.

    ReplyDelete
  19. I don't really care about the media play and commercial success. But if in 3 months lee hi still not fluent in Japanese and YG force her to sing in a language that's she's not fluent yet, oh, I'm gonna curse YG so bad.

    and all hail comment #9.

  25. Big Bang tried to hold onto the gangsta image especially with their first singles and ultimately their first album but S.Korea didn't give a shit about them.

They had their breakout when they threw off the hoodies and baggy pants, put on some skinnies, leather pants, more makeup than your average girl group and singing 'IM SO SAWWY BUT I LUB YOU'

    ReplyDelete
  26. I don't see this as media play. He's announcing something that people didnt know before. How else are people going to know that she is preparing for her Japanese debut. Also I don't think YG would push her in Japan this soon if she wasnt getting love calls from Japan. It seems like she has already gotten a cf offer from Japan. And because the market is a lot more fast paced than before he want to strike while the iron is hot. Also he isn't but hurt over Daesung's success. He was at Daesung's concert yesterday and daesung thanked him for coming. Anyway she might not be completely fluent in three months obviously but she might be able to learn basic conversational skills and pronouncation. Plus she's not the only rookie idol to be preparing for a Japan debut. Rookies right now are already going on tours and doing concerts like a year after debuting. The industry isn't the same anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  27. when bb debuted, se7en got put on back burner. when 2ne1 debuted, BB got put on back burner (yes they had solos but no group promo for long time and yknow vips are high maintenance since BB was yg's cash cow). now with lee hi, he dont care for 2ne1.

    ReplyDelete
  28. ehh nope... stop it already yg!! she looks kinda scared in music programs wih people that speak he language imagine her in a foreign place?? let her get comfortable with the stage first..
and i don understand why ppl hated 2ne1 in the beginning... every company use their artists to introduce a new act to the public.. plus they were said to be the female version just like snsd and super junior and f(x) an shinee...

    ReplyDelete
  29. she does not need a huge base in korea to make it there but it would help. if she is going to then she should debut with Its over, its a cute song but also shows her voice then go with 1234 show the cute then her strong voice

    ReplyDelete
  30. as much as they complain about YG's media play, they are also EATING it up! it's the same "stop media playing" comments but you know what? you are falling right into it! are you not reading the articles?

  33. 8. [+26, -11] Lee Hi will never make it, hasn't IU been example enough? The Japanese music market doesn't judge on just talent alone, you have to have a cute or pretty face for them to go 'kawaii~' and show interest. Lee Hi is quiet and reserved, her singing won't carry her far in Japan.

Excuse me? AKB48 is not the only thing the JPop music scene...and most Japanese don't even like them. If you're talking about popular talented groups/singers, what about Kobukuro, YUI, Utada Hikaru, Ai Otsuka, Ikimono Gakari, D51, Orange Range...heck, no one even knows what greeeen looks like.

That netizen needs to take a look at their own market...and why all the talented artists are getting crowded out by idols. /facepalm

    ReplyDelete
  34. Actually it's quite easy to understand their obsession with Japanese advancement... Marketability and value of music in Korea is really cheap if not the cheapest... Japan, however is the second largest market for music next to America. Idols will have to rely on cf's, variety and drama in order to break even the cost of producing their music...
If Korea does not want their idols to seek other countries for advancement they should fix their industry first...

    ReplyDelete
  35. She has a chance. According to netizens, debuting in Japan means you need to be beautiful. But look at Daesung, he's not the visual by all means and he's doing so well. But then again looks aren't attached strongly to male singers....but I'm just saying Lee Hi is pretty, much prettier than many Japan idols in the market. I just don't think YG artists in general do exceptionally well in Japan besides BIGBANG. Keeping 2NE1 in Korea did them major justice. I think it'll be the same for Lee Hi, she doesn't have that outgoing charm about her like Seungri/Daesung that'll make up for whatever she's lacking. It's like 2NE1 and their phobia of variety. Both are strong, mature girls. Lee Hi can pull off cute but that would be a waste of her voice. But before any of that talk, let the girl live a little. She has a long shelf-life anyways, any overseas debut can wait for a good couple of years.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Considering 2NE1s style is a rip off of japanese streetstyle (American as well) its jot their image that's hindering them. One they didn't put in the effort groups like big bang, SNSD or DBSK put in. Yg just expected them to ride off their Korean fame and make it, half assed attempts get half assed results. Second, their japanese songs are fucking terrible. I know they're their Korean songs just in Japanese but they suck sfm and sound horrible. Fans try to compensate for their failure by saying "their image is too strong" or "their music isn't what Japan is used to" No. And No. Japan is used to more genres than Korea can count.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Actually while the alive tour was going on where the tour had been sold out in all the countries it's been to, YG had not been advertising BB that much... There were all these good reviews about the tour in these countries and YG did not even let anyone know about it, that's why a lot of kvips were quite mad at YG.... I would not be surprised if a lot of these comments came from vips... Lol

    ReplyDelete
  38. JiMin's adorable! I love how playful she is

    ReplyDelete
  39. "much prettier than many Japan idols in the market"

That make no sense because Lee Hi is a solo. Not the same genre.
Beside japanese idols concepts is about being girls you can normally see in your class or your neighbor so they weren't aiming to be models in the first place tho Nogizaka46 and few 48 girls are popular as fashion models.

    ReplyDelete
  40. YG still have street cred. Check out their swag~

    ReplyDelete
  41. Omg... I just realized Lee Hi was a guest on GD's concert and GD's going to be touring Japan soon... YG's gonna use GD for Lee Hi's Japanese advancement...O_o

    ReplyDelete
  42. Idk if I'll ever understand why he's considered a fashionista. Most of the time his outfits are horrendous.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Lee Hi was actually 1# on japanese RNB and Soul album charts so i dont think that it is too bad or too early to send her over to japan.

    ReplyDelete
  44. are they trying to make her as second boa -_- i honestly hate japan career expansion tho, it just looked yge tryin to milkin money with lee hi

    ReplyDelete
  45. actually...the talented artists arent being crowded out by idols. thats what the media play is trying to show people. tbh, most people dont give a fuck about idols. its just the young kids who care. those music charts? pfft. they're all fixed, and everyone knows that. even THEN artists like busker busker beat the idols. the international fans are only fed idol propaganda while the reality in korea is different now. why do you think idols go to japan these days?

    ReplyDelete
  46. To be honest....Lee Hi is talented but she lacks everything else to become popular in Japan even if they try the "cute" concept it won't work...Japanese fans are also tired of cute concepts lately. I seriously doubt that she can become popular in Japan. Not even popular Japanese solo singer are doing that well in Japan anymore. Their sales dropped. And Lee Hi is also a Korean and Japan is tired of Kpop etc. right now.

But I still wish her good luck...but I don't like how YG treats her. She is still a kid but they put too much pressure on her.

    ReplyDelete
  47. IU is flopping in japan so i dont think lee hi even stands a chance

  51. 4. [+39, -7] Lee Hi doesn't have a chance in Japan. They're going to be judging her by her visuals first and she's not going to get anywhere with a face that looks like Park Kyung Lim.

Well, it depends on how one views 'a chance'.

BUT, I certainly agree with the visuals bit... To be a successful female solo artist in Japan, you don't need to be a goddess, but your face NEEDS to stand out to the general public, and you need to have that strong aura - just look at Nishino Kana and Amuro Namie.

    ReplyDelete
  52. There's a difference between the Korean and Japan idol market, though.

SM, JYP, DSP, etc. etc. always use their popular group to promote their rookie group (EXO in TTS's video, KARA in A-JAX's MV, JYP's "Somebody/Nobody" for 15&, Ilhoon in G.Na's song) it's expected because the companies are shown to be a "family." and because fans tend to be loyal to a certain company. (SM stans, YG stans, etc.)

In Japan these K-companies don't have that image of a "family" to the general public/non-fans. So to see someone constantly mention their ties to another, more popular group, it seems like blatant coat-tail riding and kinda like "because you like this group, you should totally like this group too, to support your bias!" Which is fine for a time, but YG did get to the point where they were overshadowing Big Bang with 2ne1; by promoting the girls more but also relying heavily on their ties to big bang--which pissed off VIPS because the guys were being used to make $$ but they weren't getting the same treatment.

    ReplyDelete
  53. thanks for your wonderful insight on the japanese music industry. seriously. i rarely find comments like this on kpop sites.

    ReplyDelete
  54. why would japan care about lee hi when they have 1000 artists that are better than her already? she has nothing new to offer them. idol groups like big bang, kara, tvxq, snsd, and t-ara appeal to the idol fans. lee hi and iu don't fit in that category, boa can barely sell 50000 cds anymore and she was once a million seller there

    ReplyDelete
  55. i think its unfair that pretty much every member of big bang had a solo or subgroup project except him. YG clearly doesn't value him

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Each time he was ready to put out his album an accident happened or the timing wasnt right. Anyway he's doing amazing in Japan right now proving to everyone that he can actually sell albums and concerts on his own. Hopefully after big bang's comeback he will debut his solo album in Korea.

      Delete
  56. Honestly i think Lee Hi's music would be more like AI or Miliyah Kato...

    ReplyDelete
  57. daesung is a member of big bang and has established fans there. lee hi is probably a nugu there

    ReplyDelete
  58. Actually, i don't consider LeeHi as ugly, i think she is cute and has a badass voice.
But YG needs to understand that she is still very young and right now he is putting too much pressure on her.
She already looks so exhausted but YG seems to only see the money and the notoriety she can bring to his company.
I think the fact to have been so much complimented after Psy's success and all the money he got, must have maken him bigheaded.
He clearly wants to surpass SM and be the number 1 company.
YG really disappoints me but i'm still a fan of its artists whom i can't stop supporting because of his stupid behaviour.
Lee Hi, i wish you to get some rest sweetie ^^

    1. How is she being over worked though? She isn't on any shows. And she only performs on two music shows. Most idols were waaaaaay overworked during their debut or success year. Big Bang almost ran away bc of their workload but when YG found out he gave them a 2 month vacation. Most of the work comes from their success. I actually wish she would appear on more shows so people would get to know her better but she's not ready. And besides YG says a bunch of stuff that usually never happens or happens at a later date. So when he says later this year it could be in December or something when his other groups are promoting in Korea.

      Delete
    2. I guess you didn't hear how she was hospitalized for exhaustion and sudden deafness due to YG overworking her.

      Delete
  59. Yes there are already tons of Japanese artists with Lee Hi's exact style.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Girls groups who all have the same face are successful in Japan so I don't see your point,

  61. Oh yeah~ they have that R&B, soul ish sound

I couldn't remember any at the time so I said Kana lol....

    ReplyDelete
  62. That joke... -_-"
As her fan, if she's really going to debut there, I hope that she'd fail, and gently go back to Korea. YG please stop making Hai looking bad, it's getting annoying.

  63. Ronald McDonald shoes ㅋㅋ

    ReplyDelete
  64. Honestly, this is true. She maybe something new to kpop, but the same can't be said with Japan.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Advancing Lee Hi to Japan makes no sense...She doesn't have a good hold with a fanbase...I don't think she will do well. I think Lee Hi needs to focus on Korea than later on move onto Japan. I honestly don't like groups who have only been around for a few months and are already talking about advancing to Japan...like c'mon

    ReplyDelete
  66. "The Japanese music market doesn't judge on just talent alone, you have to have a cute or pretty face for them to go 'kawaii~' and show interest."

People who know nothing about J-Pop are always the first to say this. It's hilarious. Anyway, she's doing fine in Korea. YG's being way too enthusiastic (as usual). YG acts just weren't meant for Japan. They do little to integrate themselves into the culture and can barely speak the language. It's either excessive English or choppy Japanese with them. It's not a good look. The only one I tolerated there was Se7en.

  71. but when 1234 was released a ton of the comments that were from people who did not now her wht's so ever were praising her voice saying she was the korean adele

    ReplyDelete
  72. Also Lee Hi won't make it, for her looks re her biggest enemy since her talent isn't enough for people to like her, that one comment is right IU is the cutest singer there and is the definition of KAWAII but she bombed unfortunately, i do think she could have a chance if YG gave her a good song(doubt it have you guys heard Scream) she could have a chance but other than that the odds are against her.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Oh well Japan? I don't think so.. oô
I love her album, but I don't think she'll be successfull over there..

    ReplyDelete
  74. but it's not wrong on a female perspective looks play the biggest deal, if you look at Kara and SNSD, catchy song plus Visual is what made them a success.

While male wise even though too many groups in kpop are popular for looks there, there are TONS of Jrock bands that sell tons of albums but so many have done so because they were able to make a fan base and be known by the public for 10 even 20 years. Best example for the case that person was making is AKB48, those girls are from talented( i love them though) looks play the biggest part in their careers because more than 50% of there fan base is male.

They also make good music to target those who don't like them for looks, people who honestly the group isn't popular for there music alone are stupid, they have some of the most meaningful songs i've heard from a group and do an amazing job when it comes to promotion. Looks no matter what you say play a big part but so does the music which is why so many groups flop they don't make music that can be easily relatable, catchy or meaningful that the japanese public can automatically fall in love with it. That's why Japan loved Mr.Taxi but hated Flower Power.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Too soon man. Way too soon for a rookie. And her sound doesn't match with Japan's music taste.

    ReplyDelete
  76. But America doesn't need the Korean Adele, they already have the actual Adele.

    ReplyDelete
  77. LOL You forgot 1TYM as well. When BigBang debuted both SE7EN AND 1TYM got placed on the back-burner.

    ReplyDelete
  78. 2. [+499, -33] Japanese exchange students say that Lee Hi's style won't work in Japan... 2NE1 didn't work out either because they had such a strong image

No, 2NE1 didn't work out because they had shit Japanese, bad remakes, and they also didn't spend enough time there.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Yeah, but it's an album that dae did of cover songs because Avex offered it to him since he's been waiting forever for YG to let him do a solo :/. It'd be nice for him to get an album of original dogs instead of only getting to cover other ones :c

    ReplyDelete
  80. For idols, it's not just looks, or music, but variety skills. I think variety is the more important thing than all the others because 70% of their activities are in varieties. Momoclo are gaining massive popularity for their energy and entertaining appearances on shows. It's the same for AKB with AKBINGO and many members are variety hosts or regular on shows. Arashi's popularity attribute to their many variety shows that show off their personalities as well.

    ReplyDelete
  81. [+583, -50] Send Lee Hi to America, not Japan...

Nooo, just NO. She'll seriously be trampled if she even tries to enter the American market..

    ReplyDelete
  82. Agree. I live in Korea. If you say you like idol music, people here will think you're weird unless you're a teenager or a foreigner. Koreans listen to ballad more than idol songs. Young people love indie and elders love trot. Even in high school i didn't know anyone who listened to idols. Their songs are always played at shops and streets so people do know them but they're not crazy about k-idol-pop, thus their companies media play all the time and make it seem like a big deal so they can send idols to china and japan to make money.

    ReplyDelete
  83. If they could appeal potential Japanese fans, BJ's would least get some Japanese activites and releases they have been craving but they flopped so hard that now the has been closed.

Even a rookie group like Myname even outsells them.

  94. Totally agree. She has a lot of time so no need to rush. And, I don't believe YG announcement anymore until something really happens.

  95. I learned that early. I'm not even excited for 2ne1 until they bring in the first teaser same with Lee HI's. I was oblivious with her news of comeback until I see the teaser and the MV released. I think I felt numb from all the broken promises of YG.

  96. >Implying truth = hating

  97. but saying that they would ship her off to Japan is not a good way of implying the truth. Yes, she does have awful performances since she's still young on stage but that doesn't mean they have to ship her off to Japan. She needs more training that is all.

  98. lol I was just playing around, no need to take my words so literally.

  99. LOl street cred? YG already lost whatever street cred they had when they debuted Big Bang

  100. AKB48's main appeal is not how they look or their music (lol), it's their "approachable/girl-next-door" image.

  101. k I'm glad you cleared that out

    ReplyDelete
  102. she'll go nowhere with her super awkward personality

  103. Yes, idol that you can meet (almost) everyday

  104. 1) why doesnt YG learn. none of his artists do that well in japan. big bang have done the best and they are at most mid-tier in japan, daesung is doing decently. 2ne1 flopped and this kid (i shouldnt call her that since she is probably older than me) doesnt have too much of a chance of learning japanese in 3 months.

    2) i am really glad YG has decided to make an ass of himself repeatedly in the last 6 months. now YG fans can get off of the high horses they perched themselves on and realize that 'papa' YG is no different from any other money making businessman who operates in the k-entertainment industry

  105. America already have adele...i dont think they need adele wannabe with expressionless enotion

    ReplyDelete
  106. but Adele is European ^^

    ReplyDelete
  107. Not mention Lee Hi is like a downgrade of Adele. Lee Hi is talented, but I love Adele's voice and I feel like Lee Hi is nowhere Adele's level.

  108. Japanese advancement? She wasn't ready for the korean one yet.

  109. So true that it hurts

    ReplyDelete
  110. I guess this means when the girl group debuts lee hi will be back burner and then when the boy group comes the girls will be back burner

    ReplyDelete
  111. I said this and got jumped in comments lol

    ReplyDelete
  112. Lee Hi's not performing with him after that though. o_o

    ReplyDelete
  113. Yeah...but she is popular in us too right?

  114. The never ending cycle in YGE. Only BigBang truly matters. Without them, IDK where YGE would be.
