Article: Running Man 'I hate Haha and Gary' the severity of Kwanghee's informal speech use
Source: Sports Chosun via Nate
On 'Running Man', Kwanghee, an 88er, said "I hate Haha and Gary" in informal speech in reference to two people who are 11 and 12 years older than him. The article delves into other instances where Kwanghee spoke in informal speech to seniors on other shows like 'Laws of the Jungle' but managed to avoid controversy because his co-stars covered it up as comedy.
He tried to speak informally to Julien Kang on 'We Got Married' despite Julien Kang showing that he was uncomfortable with it. Panelist Kim Mi Sun saw the scene and said that Kwanghee had also tried to use informal speech with her and that it had shocked her at the time.
The article claims that viewers are done with 'coddling him' now that he's committed the same mistake on 'Running Man', and the article says that he is deserving of the criticism.

1. [+2,178, -149] Kwanghee seriously doesn't know when to stop. He calls himself a K-Pop leader when he barely has any parts in his own songs to begin with. Why does he think he can say whatever he wants on variety shows? It pissed me off a bit
2. [+2,036, -106] Please learn to be respectful
3. [+2,015, -112] He calls himself a trend at the end of everything he says. Doesn't he know that he's not up to that title yet? Can he dance well, sing well, what can he do? The title of 'singer' is completely wasted on him. Isn't he embarrassed of searching his name online and seeing himself referenced as 'singer'?
4. [+307, -18] He may think he can mess with Gary because of his image on variety shows but Gary is Leessang. Leessang, you hear me? Who does this plastic face think he is talking like that to him?
5. [+280, -17] It really made me uncomfortable the way he just... spoke without speaking
6. [+271, -10] Even our country's most top celebrity Yoo Jae Suk refers to younger celebrities with -ssi
7. [+269, -16] Is he not even nervous being around hyungs of such stature? All he knows how to do is run his mouth... He won't last for a minute in the army with an attitude like that
8. [+205, -14] He won't learn until he finally loses everything with that mouth
9. [+182, -9] Gary really looked uncomfortable.. It may be a variety but certain lines should not be crossed
10. [+180, -14] Kwanghee's tone of speech really bothered me the entire time I was watching. Gary and Haha probably only let him go because they were being filmed. Learn to be respectful.

Probably won't see Kwanghee back on Running Man for awhile
ReplyDelete...calm down
ReplyDeletethe show is scripted anyway
I think its just KwangHee's thing. But I know for a fact that talking banmal is looked down upon on TV. And I think a lot of the time he does it without even thinking about it. But if his seniors are uncomfortable with it than he should learn to respect it and change.
ReplyDeleteKwanghee's been doing the most for the LONGEST of time and he is treading on thin ice. One day, he's going to make an interview and say something messed up and they'll be death petitions everywhere and calling for him to be kicked out of ZE:A or something of the sort. While I would not wish that on ANY idol (seeing my biases go through that was enough, thank you), it really does seem like he's heading down that path. Learn from others' mistakes and stick to the other side the line, Kwanghee.
ReplyDeletewhat? do you even watch RM?
ReplyDeleteWhen Julien Kang his agency mate and a half-Korean at that feels uncomfortable, you gotta wonder just how worse others must have felt. Dammit kwanghee, your group's already struggling as it is. don't be the one to destroy everything all of you have worked hard for. It's not just your career and reputation at stake.
ReplyDeletegood
ReplyDeleteyeah I do. Every show is scriped. You can believe what you want lol
ReplyDeleteThe sad thing is i don't think netizens care enough about ze:a to want kwanghee to be kicked out. More likely that they'll just ask the whole group to disband :(
ReplyDeleteI thought i was the only one who noticed the informality when he made that statement.....I should have known that eagle eyed netizens would pick up on it also.....
ReplyDeleteThis girl is too much lately, he's just a spoiled brat who deserve to get a beating from his senior so that he can show some fuking respect, I wonder what if he go to the army now and started talking like that with his senior, now thats deserve to go on a tv lol
ReplyDeleteAsshole.
DeleteIt's scripted but not word for word hence he was supposed to use honorifics and i think Gary was bothered by it hence he reacted negatively....
ReplyDeleteDialogues are not scripted.
ReplyDeleteEven the other idols seemed exasperated by Kwanghee, particularly Joon and Sulli. Joon even told him to shut up several times.
ReplyDeleteI guess, he really should stop now. It was funny as it lasted but now.. get respect and manners and behave.
ReplyDeleteI agree. iirc, even if both of you are close in real life and disregard the age ranks, you still have to 'pretend' to speak formally on TV to show respect. Am i right in this?
ReplyDeletehow did he become popular anyways? because he's one of the most annoying tv personalities I've seen in a long time.
ReplyDelete"3. [+2,015, -112] He calls himself a trend at the end of everything he says. Doesn't he know that he's not up to that title yet? Can he dance well, sing well, what can he do? The title of 'singer' is completely wasted on him. Isn't he embarrassed of searching his name online and seeing himself referenced as 'singer'?"
ReplyDeleteTo be fair to him it's only him and Dongjun that are barely keeping ZeA relevant. I can't stand him but that isn't something you can deny despite his lack of talent.
This isn't just RM though as the article is pointing out it's his constant use of informal speech towards seniors that viewers are tired of.
ReplyDeleteAnd RM is not scripted line for line jfc.
Exactly, I noticed it too. Maybe it was a bit because Kwanghee wasn't any good at any of the games and people like Minho and Yonghwa are very competitive and got frustrated he was letting the team down, but Jonghyun wasn't doing much either and nobody was annoyed with him. Yoo Jaesuk even commented on it at the end saying he thought it was funny, and the regulars seemed to find him cute (like Jongkook patting him affectionately after taking his nametag). But with Kwanghee they did all look like they were losing patience, like during the last game when Kwanghee was following Joon around and Joon was obviously trying to get rid of him and telling him to be quiet, or when the regulars just frankly commented that Kwanghee is bad at the games. The only person who didn't look like he was annoyed with Kwanghee was L, and who ever knows what L's thinking.
ReplyDeleteprobably wont be back on AT ALL. *
ReplyDeleteWell I don't really care about him and I did liked the episode so *shrugs*
ReplyDeleteHe and the other member of ZE:A are only members who makes the group relevant. He should be more careful in the future, yes but Korean netizen freak out about everything. I just can't take them serious anymore (at least for most of the time).
& I still don't believe that the lines are not scripted as well at least the most of them. It unusual for Korea.
I don't even know why they let him on so many variety shows...everything is like a joke to him and proved many times before to aggravate people who he comes in contact with. Even the Ze:a members at times have shown they not comfortable around him.
ReplyDeleteOff with that wank's plastic face!
That as well. Individual members of ZE:A are more popular and successful than ZE:A a music group so I don't see the point in having them stay together when they flop on the charts with every musical release.
ReplyDeleteKwanghee better be kidding with leader or hallyu thing ESPECIALLY the pioneer thing I mean wtf?! THE REAL LEADERS OF HALLYU RIGHT NOW: PSY BOA DBSK SUPER JUNIOR SNSD BIG BANG 2NE1 KARA
ReplyDeleteThe other idols was so polite..Not only I was annoyed at Kwang hee's manners but he totally didn't even try during games while the other idols are getting slammed here and there plus no one can speak coz he is an attention seeker...Lee Joon and Yong hwa can be funny too but Kwang hee does'nt give a chance..
ReplyDeleteZiwan is famous too, hes was in a popular drama an know became famous.
ReplyDeleteSome dialogues may be scripted but it's ludicrous to suggest that every line in every show is written down for them to follow. No one is denying that things are scripted.
ReplyDelete"He and the other member of ZE:A are only members who makes the group relevant."
Already said this in my other comment.
"yes but Korean netizen freak out about everything. I just can't take them serious anymore (at least for most of the time)."
Netizens overreact but the subject of informal and formal speech, senior and junior works a lot differently in Korea. As someone who enjoys Korean culture I'm not qualified to educate you but I do know that this is not something netizens are 'overreacting' to this time.
Lovelines, spies and that sort of thing are indeed scripted but not dialogues word by word....that would be impossible.
ReplyDeleteHe can be quite annoying. You can only use the "it's variety" pass for so long. Take it down a notch.
ReplyDeletenetizenbuzz, did the article mean park mi sun? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/We_Got_Married#The_Hosts
ReplyDeletethey already want them to disband as it is because of the new-found fame siwan has acquired. many think he's above being an idol at this point considering he did so well in TMTETS and would rather see the group disband. netizens think being in ze:a is hindering his potential as an established actor.
ReplyDeleteyou are right actually lot of celebrities said they thought RM was scripted and were surprise it was not i may be naive but i believe it lovelines and stuff are scripted but nothing else
ReplyDeleteI have an eonni that i am very very close with, but even so i still speek in formal language to her, when we are talking in korean. that is my way of showing her, that i respect her very much and it doesn't make us any less close. Speaking informal can be used in variety - sometimes - but it should be a more be like an exception. Though I'm not Korean, knowing how much speaking formal to a senior or someone older than you is weighted in korean culture, even i felt really uncomfortable by watching Kwanghee. On a whole i would've enjoyed this episode so much if it weren't for attention seeking kwanghee
ReplyDeletei think it's because he's similar to Boom (dear lord, like we need another of those) in the same way leeteuk is. the constant talking keeps shows from falling into an awkward lull; they try to keep the mood up with nonstop talking and the brain to mouth filters don't know how to keep up.
ReplyDelete"The only person who didn't look like he was annoyed with Kwanghee was L, and who ever knows what L's thinking."
ReplyDeleteI lol-ed. XD
Everyone loves L. <3
It depends. Like... let's use Dara and CL as an example. Off-stage, Dara and CL are really comfortable with each other and use nicknames instead of "CL-sshi" or "Dara-sshi". But on tv interviews, they always address the other person as "CL-sshi" or "Dara-unni" because the age gap between them is so vast AND also because they are in a professional setting.
ReplyDeleteTwo friends can be as informal as they want in a casual setting, but if one of them debuted first (or is older) they should address the other person properly.
You should always err on the side of caution. In Korea, it's better to be too formal than it is to be informal.
I don't understand how Kwanghee can keep making this mistake. He is a Korean who was born and raised in Korea... these societal customs should already have been ingrained in him like everyone else.
perhaps he got some strong back-ups? wonder why he stayed so long in the industry. He ain't that funny, the so called "courage" of admitting the plenty cosmetic surgeries he has done was overused.
ReplyDelete3.
ReplyDeleteAgree § I wanted to slap him . He was saying it a hunred times ...i was also fed up of his behavior. But well it's Kwanghee. I never really liked him on variety show
6. [+271, -10] Even our country's most top celebrity Yoo Jae Suk refers to younger celebrities with -ssi.
ReplyDeleteAgree.
I'd be thankful towards the PDs then, gosh his voice was so darn annoying throughout the episode /facepalm.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised L could tolerate Kwanghee at all
ReplyDeleteI mean he's a useless idol anyway so why is anybody even mad. lol
ReplyDeletethe last RM ep.even Lee Joon call sulli who is 94 years sulli-shi..!! watch it !! and he bow to big nose hyung went he meet him at greet himm. thats manner. he is not loud like kwanghee but still manage to make die laughing
ReplyDeleteI think it's scripted to an extent (plot lines, love lines, etc) but they'd never encourage Kwanghee to be disrespectful and add that as part of the script. That makes no sense, they know the viewers would lose their shit and the cast would be uncomfortable too.
ReplyDeleteKwanghee (and most young/new idols who mostly debuted post 2009/2010) are pretty lucky as netizens weren't as strict as before. The proof is that nobody criticized him for speaking informal language in his past variety shows. I still remember idols who debuted pre 2010 always get criticized easily by netizens just from speaking informally or didn't bow low enough or not greeting seniors. Nowadays junior idols are too loose (partially because of halyu and their management) that many seniors sometimes even talked about it in variety shows.
ReplyDeleteKwanghee is a funny guy he has amazing variety skills, but it makes sense that disrespecting someone just to make people laugh is not right. He doesn't seem like a person who would be bothered by what people are saying about his informal language but I hope he does control himself in the future ~^^
ReplyDeleteThat's a very good example and I agree!!!
ReplyDeleteAgreed. The whole entire episode almost all you heard from him were complaints and his annoying laugh. LOL.
ReplyDeleteKwanghee I think was just purely there for entertainment purposes however he came off too strong and just rude. It's ridiculous.
Atleast Boom has some manners to start with.
ReplyDeleteAs the article points out, his manner of use disrecpect language towards the older is the main point. Thought even this is scripted I believe the scriptwriter of those RM or WGM didn't stupid enough to make him to speak informal language which is part of important Korean culture.
ReplyDeleteSiwan is a lot more popular now because of the dramas he was in. Also, Hyunsik is more well known because of his stint on Romantic & Idol. It's not just Kwanghee and Dongjun anymore.
ReplyDeleteThe episode had a good balance of funny & suspense. I kinda like Kwanghee's style of variety but I don't think it fits with Running Man. It's funny and all but during the bell hide & seek, he was just extra baggage and when he shouted at HaHa and Gary in banmal, I kinda had that *he shouldnt do that* expression in my face. I should say, stick to studio variety/talk shows. Lastly, I think Kwanghee should consider on being a comedian/MC. I kinda feel that he has a better future going in that path.
ReplyDeleteThe worst thing was when they were playing the hockey game and even Sulli had to tell Kwanghee off about not even trying to help
ReplyDeleteBut at least Leeteuk is one of the most well-mannered idols. There's literally nothing to pick about his greetings. In some sense Boom has the manners too, I've never seen him use banmal on TV, even around the SJ boys.
ReplyDeleteI feel seriously sorry for Sunhwa to be virtually married to him on wgm... How good would it be if it was Siwan instead.. oh well, I hope we won´t be seeing Kwanghee back on RM ever again. He didn´t even do or TRY to do anything.
ReplyDeletelet's just say L is keeping her image..or practicing his acting..*not saying this as a bad thing
ReplyDeletehe also referred to himself one of the pioneers of kpop lol
ReplyDeleteZe:a is a bunch of nobodies brake him of nobody will care
ReplyDeleteI think it's just his persona for variety show. But why pick a persona of "ahjumma trapped in male body"?
ReplyDeleteHis hyperness is uncontrollable at times and he's bad at reading the situation. He defo need to stop with the banmal before people put him down in chopping board.
other scenario: people put him down in chopping board. He just laugh at it, joke about it on tv program and continue with his antics.
If it turns like this, he has reached the god lv lol
lol joon is a klutlz, and he has manner.
ReplyDeletesimilar doesn't mean exactly the same. he could be similar to boom in terms of loudness, ssanti persona, jokes, etc and might not be the same when it comes to manner.
ReplyDeleteBoom needs to gtfo, and I'm glad that his sidekick is serving right now, but god, Kwanghee took his place. I watched the MBC Entertainment awards and even Kang Ho Dong can't stand him and ignored him a few times while he kept saying his ad libs.
ReplyDeleteWell I'm curious to read about that since I'm not follow their group news.
ReplyDeleteleeteuk has manners??? since when!?? pfft
ReplyDeleteYea, Yonghwa had barely any screen time even though he's practically a cast member and had some of the funniest interactions of the episode.
ReplyDeletewhen RM PD decided to cut out Jonghyun part at the swimming pool (which looks super cool in the preview) and include more Kwanghee antics instead. it kinda pisses me off
ReplyDeleteI have never read/heard any interview or rumour which picked on his manners. Sure, he's not the most pleasing entertainer in terms of his variety persona, but this guy does his greetings so well, if you want to pick on his manners, it's like trying to pick a bone out of an egg. He greets everyone in the same 90 degrees manner, not just to sunbaes and PDs, but to other staff and even his hoobaes. He may not be my favourite person in the world, but I've still yet to find another idol who does his greetings so well, he's actually widely praised for it.
ReplyDeleteEvidence:

^ From the 05:00 mark onwards, Heechul talks about the way Leeteuk greets others and you can hear how everybody agrees with it
Myungsoo is the maknae hoobae (not by age but by debut) and I think he was being very cautious of his image all the time. Not to mention he never expresses himself.
ReplyDeleteI think he wants to show that he's outgoing and get along with people well. He's trying TOO hard
ReplyDeletehe was funny before but i'm actually really tired of him..
ReplyDeleteyou took "all varieties are scripted" thing too seriously
ReplyDeleteI'm praying hard for that....Such a attention seeker...Other idols can be funny and waaaayyyyy more witty than Kwang hee like Yong Hwa and Lee joon....At first idol olympics..Every idol was given equal amount to talk..
ReplyDeleteI think RM is annoyed at Kwang hee too since they put a caption of kwang hee just being loud and not helping at all or is it just me reading crazy in between??
ReplyDeleteme too...when he mentions that...I mean bias aside...all the other idols there are waaayyyy popular than ZEA...Seriously..I came to know Kwang hee coz of his grossed out fan boying on Nickhkhun and Yong Hwa..I'm cnblue bias but I know a thing or two on mblaq, fx, shinee, infinite songs and totally none on his group..plus he calls himself the trend when clearly he is not..when you look at the wikipedia of the other idols with him, his record will be a joke..
ReplyDeleteEven minho called Yong Hwa hyung when they are just 2 years apart..10 years is unforgivable..
ReplyDeletei don't undestand why they put kwanghee on programs.
ReplyDeletedo people think he's funny? i know he wants to give off the 'kwangsoo' feel.
but he's not even close.
ignorant. people speaking banmal to a sunbae is extremely rude in korean culture. how embarrassing to even say you enjoy the korean culture.
ReplyDeleteits kwanghee. he want to make his own trademark in variety show like any celebrities. he did call jongkok hyung in rm so why judging on some of his words without the others?!personally i dont find him annoying, he did it to get more screen time and he succeeded. regardless its negative or positive zea got public atttention because of him. im not zea fan.and im not a tool like others.
ReplyDeleteJust looking at his face makes me soo mad. and the way he talks to his elders is very disrespectful. The title of a singer, as someone else said( not me but i agree with them), the title of the singer is an absolute waste on him. It gives shame to the other singers who actually have morality. I hope he either learns to be respectful or ,if he does not, spoils his voice box and loses his ability. I feel very sorry for his group. SOMEONE GET DUCKTAPE and SHUT HIS MOUTH already!!!!
ReplyDeletei feel super bad..... sorry for the people and his fans....... and him too i guess................................. i dont normally do this....... its just i was so irritated....... im gonna shut up now
ReplyDelete
