Exactly. If you look closely, the really popular dramas (domestically & internationally) only ever have one, max. two idols in the cast (School 2013, Reply 1997, Flower Boy series). Dramas without any idols are mostly popular in Korea and Idol-filled dramas (Dream High, TTBY, YAB...) are considered big international, but had pretty bad ratings in Korea...I guess producers don't learn from facts...

DeleteDon't confuse Dream High with Dream High 2. Dream High's great ratings were what spurred the production of Dream High 2. But Dream High 2's lack of direction led to its bad ratinga. Not all idol dramas are flops. Dream High had a great cast, beautiful storyline and fantastic chemistry between these kids of relatively similar ages. Not the best acting, but it is compensated for in its heart and honesty in storytelling. :)

ReplyDeletewhy r these people always complaining. there must be a reason why all these idols r being casts. if the actors of the dramas dont mind then lets just watch the drama. yes this drama might be important for kim tae hee but she cant act for shit. the suzy they hate acts way better. i watched both dream high and iris, and there were times where kim tae hee made me cringe. although i do agree that idols should leave roles for rookie actors cause how r they going to grow big if they r not being given major roles and that lately every drama has to have at least 1 idol with a major role but. i dont know cause its a major dilemma for viewers but i guess all they can do is just tolerate it and i am sure the PD and the top actors will realise in due time that it isnt really worth it to hire all these idols as lately all this hallalya bulshit aint going no where. the only people who laterly r benefiting from it apart from selling the drama is lee min ho, jang geun and yoochun in terms of popularity in asia and no other idol or actors r getting famous because of drama production

ReplyDeleteReply 1997 has more than two idols in their cast but they still did well. Eunji and Hoya are current idols, Eun Jiwon is a past idol, SIG is a singer (it's not like he's been taken very seriously as an actor like Shin So Yul is).

I almost stopped watching Ghost after three episodes because she was basically just a dead fish crying all the time. After the third episode, her scenes were cut and they added more of the Mad Cow dude, So Ji Sub, and the bad guy with the glasses and all was well.

The first Japanese version (Ikuta Toma + Horikita Maki + Oguri Shun), not the second one made in 2011 with Acchan. The 2011 version was pretty bad, but TTBY was seriously the worst. Even worse than the Chinese version...

15% ratings, but that's because they casted idols in most of the lead roles. Everyone who reviewed the show couldn't get over how awful IU, Taecyeon, Suzy, and Wooyoung were at acting (and the plot line was really fucking stupid). Kim Soo Hyun was the only person in that drama with even a speck of talent, and his acting was still a little rough during DH1.

ReplyDeleteThat prob gets a lot of ratings cuz younger teens watch them. But 15% is nowhere near popularity. For a drama to be considered a sensation, the average rating should be above 30%.

ReplyDeleteI read all or most of the reviews in Dream High from Dramabeans, dramacrazy ,koala, and other blogs..most of them liked the show and actually thinks the idols were casted perfectly. The story was nicely plotted, thus the positive response. It's not only Kim Soo Hyun but all of them including the writers and directors were good in making that drama. If you can't accept its popularity then that's your problem. Your comment is subjective anyway so I will not take that against you.

ReplyDelete30 running to 40% and above are national drama already. 15-20%+ are "hit" dramas. Since OP said( before editing her post) that DH is a FLOP. Regardless of what demographics who watched that drama, DH was far from being a flop in Korea. It's as popular as A gentleman's dignity, Nice Guy, and Bridal Mask and others within that scale in Korea (rating wise). DH at that time was no. 1 in time slot beating Athena.

people should stop being so rude and prejudge without actually seeing Seungyeon act this role out first. Seung yeon has acted before and has done a decent job, don't criticize if you haven't seen her. i think ppl should only criticize of say their opinion things like that if they have watched the idols act. i've seen LYH and Suzy and IU all act and i can say they aren't good actors, I'm only saying this because I ACTUALLY HAVE SEEN THEM ACT. don't be so rude and compare Seungyeon to these ppl bc she hasnt shown what she can do yet.

Wow, u need an eye check, but seung yeon is not even remotely pretty. She's ok when she does her music due to heavy makeup, but in the drama, she looks ugly, and I don't find her one bit pretty. KTH is a lot prettier than seung yeon.
