'Iris 2' producers make up a brand new character as an excuse to cast another idol

Article: 'Iris 2' After Kang Jiyoung's withdrawal, producers decide not to replace the character... A new male character created instead

Source:
Newsen via Nate

Producers were going to cast another girl group member in place of Jiyoung but they decided to instead create a new boy character. They will be casting a male idol for the character.

1. [+363, -19] Just use a damn rookie actor already, why are they using another idol? And then they're going to go and whine about Infinity Challenge songs, these fu*kin idiots

2. [+296, -12] So after hearing people say they don't want a girl group member, they decide to go with a boy group member? Just stop using idols

3. [+304, -27] Cast Kwanghee as the male idol. He can speak informally to Jang Hyuk, piss him off, and die after he gets hit with sillicon.

4. [+29, -7] Lee Joon and Yoon Doojoon are more than enough idols for one drama... Whatever, I don't want any of them

5. [+28, -4] What about Kim Woo Bin

6. [+19, -3] There are tons of rookie actors but they are so determined to use an idol no matter what

7. [+16, -0] Basically admitted that the character isn't even necessary to the plot, they just want an excuse to throw in another idol

8. [+16, -6] Stop with the idols already!!!!!!!! I aspire to become a script writer and I'd be really pissed if I had to use an idol in my drama

9. [+15, -4] Good job leaving the show Jiyoung...

10. [+13, -0] They are seriously so obsessed with idols 態態態 If it's because they want to export it, isn't it already enough with two idols already??? Why are they so hell bent on sticking another idol in the place of an idol who already left???

  4. I get it! No more idols. But why do they keep using idols? Are they used to appeal the domestic or international audience?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. International audiences because they can sell the rights to broadcast it in different countries (mainly Japan, China, South East Asia and some European countries) and get tons of money, sometimes millions even if the show doesn't do well domestically...

      Delete
    2. International audience. The korean audience can hate the drama but what's more important is that it's more lucrative selling the drama overseas. And idols are more well-known internationally so it's more likely for other countries to import this show and the international market is larger. That's the sad fact. And the thing is, international fans only look out for their idols and not the storyline or the acting skills. If their oppas or unnies are inside, that's it, they will support it. There's no more need to cast a rookie actor since he/she is unknown and no one overseas cares.

  6. If they gonna cast a male Idol, they should use someone who's extremely popular oversea so they can sell the drama to other countries even if it has low rating in Korea. For ex, King of Dramas has low rating, but the producer still can sell it to other countries due to Siwon's popularity, same goes to To The Beautiful You. Just don't use irrelevant Idols.

  11. Any fan that cares for Woo Bin's career as an actor would want him to stay away from this production.....

  12. What a joke, this drama.

    ReplyDelete
  13. they're used so they can sell this drama internationally.

  14. I would die. Doo and Woobin would be too much sexiness to handle<3

  15. Tall, handsome, can act so damn well, portrays all of his drama characters well, flawless and so much more. I don't see any reason to not cast him.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I don't mind Idols casting in dramas as long as they don't play lead or second lead roles. It irks me when I see people that won't put in the effort to learn acting or just suck at it cast in dramas. I see the benefits with casting idols but I also see the disadvantages. As a person whose been watching dramas since I could remember (mum really loves her lakorns/dramas), I rather watch a good quality drama with acting skills that don't make you feel embarrass watching them. Rookie actors should be casted more, Kim Woo Bin is amazing. If anyone seen School 2013 they would just understand how good that guy is!

    ReplyDelete
  17. i just hope the story line is good. i dont care who they use. i just want some kind of love story in there just like the first one!

    ReplyDelete
  18. Right. Please Woo Bin, stay away from this sinking boat ! It will be a stain in your CV.

  20. idk is doojoon and lee joon even popular overseas? like I can understand the casting of jiyoung or hara or someone from SM.. but those two?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes, I think they are rather popular. Lee Joon has some acting experience in a movie (ninja assasin) before so maybe casting him is to lessen the impact of casting an idol. Doojoon should be popular. B2ST is well loved in many parts of the world. SM? Who else is available for them to cast? Yunho is acting in a drama, Changmin gonna be a MC soon, SNSD is having their comeback, Super Junior M is making their comeback too, Lee Yeon Hee has enough negative comments about her acting, Go Ara is not famous enough, exo is still a rookie group, SHINee? Minho just acted in a drama, f(x) Sulli too... Anyone else available?

      Delete
  21. I honestly don't know but they're popular in SK

    ReplyDelete
  22. They really want to sell this drama internationnally, so they stop taking into consideration acting skills.. Well, I'm not gonna bitching, there is no actor that I love in this drama, so I don't mind to avoid it. I hope it will sell well in the world.

    ReplyDelete
  23. You don't follow the two that's why you don't know and YES these two are very popular overseas.

    ReplyDelete
  24. As a Cassie/JYJ fan, I can admit when I'm overstepping boundaries. That's exactly what you're doing wright now and you're making the rest of us look bad. This article doesn't even mention JYJ so why are they being brought up??

    ReplyDelete
  25. did you just answer your own question o.O

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1st i dont mind if idol cast in a drama if they can deliver. i know lee joon was in a movie, sitcom, and just finish his movie (which is produce by Kim ki-duk) if you stereotyping all idol can act well thats your problem, but i do agree they should just cast a rookie actor just thats just they better option for the drama. and yeah both doojoon and lee joon is famous.. but tbh i dont really know doojoon acting skill

    ReplyDelete
  27. half these people i bet wont be watching the drama even without the idols. these netizen r starting to sound like whining bitches and its getting repetitive. and i am not even overly fond of idols in dramas. in fact i hate them in it and its to late anyways. another thing they were hating on idols way before the infinite challenge incident its just that they were given extra opportunity to whine like crazy freaks

    ReplyDelete
  28. But... he'd make a really good assassin... He's got the perfect intensity! Although you're probably right, with the poor response the drama is getting even before coming out...

    ReplyDelete
  29. i figured that i would ask you here because this article is fairly new, and i would assume that you are currently on the site updating.
i've been here since the begging and i was just wondering why all of a sudden you are discussing it. Sorry.

    you can't tell though

  32. I will give anyone (including idols) a fair chance. They must start from something, and in this drama, they won't be the leads anyway. I think one of the reason why they cast idols is to give IRIS 2 a greater exposure; it's been more than 3 years since IRIS was aired, and maybe they're not confident enough that the international viewers will watch this drama if there're no idols in it. I noticed that dramas which don't have idols, rarely gained any recognition internationally, which is sad because some of them are very great dramas (ie. the Chaser, Tree with Deep Roots).

Of course profit is also taking part here. More idols, greater exposure, more chance IRIS 2 will be exported to many overseas countries = higher profit.

I'm watching IRIS2 for Jang Hyuk, Lee Bum Soo & Kim Young Chul, and because I liked IRIS. So hopefully they won't "butcher" the quality of this drama for the sake of popularity and profit.

    1. The problem lies with casting idols in a drama is they are not giving the rookie actors a chance to act and that's their profession - to act. And if idols want to act that much, then why not they become actors in the first place?

      Delete
  33. ohemgee he would be like TOP assassin character from Iris S1 2.0.
And he has such a strong gaze he would be perfect for the assassin role.
And looks like Jiyoungs role was not very big of they can cut her character out so easily.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Atleast give everyone a chance to act. The people will judge and decide in the end if they want that idol again for another drama or not. Aish. Thank you for a logical post. I'm only watching this for Joon though LOL

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm hoping the new guy will NOT BE MINHO from Shinee or L from Infinite. Both are poker faces.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Slowly it does get ridiculous.. oƓ

    ReplyDelete
  37. It's not about poor response but typecasting....with the exception of his brief cameo in TTBY all his roles on major network has been the intense charismatic roles.....Hence as an actor, he should try a different role to show that he can offer more than his looks bring to the table (which is the badass look that his face esp. his eyes naturally has)....

    ReplyDelete
  38. i think they should give Joon a chance at least. I mean before he was an idol.... he WAS in ninja assassin.. playing the younger version of rain. he does have some skills.

    ReplyDelete
  39. k-netizen forgot why producers put an idol in a drama..one of the reason is that idols are popular in overseas..so meaning if this idol starred in particular drama his/her fans in overseas will definitely watch this..example To be beautiful you is really low rated in domestic, but SM can sale it in high price in international viewers..the revenue of drama from international is no joke...

    ReplyDelete
  40. Don't worry, Minho is busy preparing for SHINee's comeback right now, I doubt he'd do a drama.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Crossing my fingers that the producers see all these comments on the article and cast him.

    >___<!!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. Well they are trying to inch deeper into international viewers with this series so it's no surprise that they decided to use idols. Unfortunately, this shows a flaw to the so called Hallyu wave. It's too idol centric where the wave was supposed to spread not only electronic/dance/pop idol stars but also actors, dramas, videos, entertainers/singers of other & most importantly culture.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I love Joon and Doojoon, but the only drama they should star in right now is Dream High 3... if JYP can scrounge up enough money for it. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  44. It's ridiculous because IRIS 2 has a good enough staff and storyline to be great on its own.

I kinda get why they would cast idols in the romance/drama or romance/comedy K-dramas, because that's what's popular overseas (because international fans can get carried away shipping everyone) but... IRIS 2 is an action drama. A serious drama.

They don't need to cast idols!!!!!! BLEH.

    ReplyDelete
  45. what a determination to cast idol... desperate for attentions? 'at least the fandom gonna watch it'

    ReplyDelete
  46. minho is good in action. i don't think it's a mistake to cast him.

    ReplyDelete
  47. This drama is so going to fail beacuse of the multiple idols casting !! Use real actors pleaseeee !!!!! Kim Won Bin would have been perfect !!!

    ReplyDelete
  48. He does have skill but I don't get why people are supporting Doojon more !

    ReplyDelete
  49. things like this are some reasons why idols get unnecessary hate, it's not their foult but rookies actors never get a chance, and i'm sure some of them are very talented. I remember Lee Minho talking about how unfair is this to rookies and actors.

    ReplyDelete
  50. LMAO I was going to say the exact same thing but all of you beat me too. Kim Woo Bin for every role please.

  51. "They are seriously so obsessed with idols 態態態 If it's because they want to export it, isn't it already enough with two idols already??? Why are they so hell bent on sticking another idol in the place of an idol who already left??? "
because they indeed want to export it because they earn a lot of money because of that and casting an idol is a good way to make fans buy it ! WHY ? because koreans are the worst buyers ! they almost never buy legally a song or a drama ! that's why so much groups want to be known internationally and in Asia because that's what brings them money.
if koreans artists counted on their citizens to make money, they would be very poor right now !

    ReplyDelete
  52. People crying about idols being hated for this and only excusing it with "they want international attention!!!" are annoying.

Sure, the reason is obvious but does the average Korean give a shit when they just want to turn on the television without seeing an idol for once? No matter how you put it, they're only used for more cash. Rookie actors deserve to live their dream more than some idol deserves a chance to look "multitalented" (which 95% of the time isn't even the truth.)

OMG SHAME ON YOU ..... I BET YOU ARE KOREAN.

  54. Feel a bit bad for idols for getting crap about the IC-songs. It was k-pop reps that said it, not idols themselves. However, I usually defend idols in acting matters(when they have skills to back them up), but it feels way off when they are so insistent on casting one. Just hold a damn audition!

    ReplyDelete
  55. yesterday the name was the same nvm

    ReplyDelete
  56. you dont know how the storyline will go. sequels usually suck, so they have to have some kind of backup plan just in case it doesnt pull large ratings in korea.
    i
m looking at your statement wrong, do you mean that the international audience cant take a serious drama? what about city hunter? that shit blew up cause of lee minho. he's not an idol.

and its not like the idols are playing the main leads. so why the dislike? are you a frequent drama watcher? i got into kdramas back in 2006 before i discovered kpop 2 years ago. i hope you're not one of those people that just say stop casting idols when you only watch one drama a year. i really dont see anything wrong with casting them.

  57. i've noticed with disqus that sometimes it shows the same person/name commenting more than once or replying to themselves but thats before you refresh. you have to refresh your page and you'll see it changed to the actual name.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I didn't know that, thanks for the heads up

  60. 'Cast Kwanghee as the male idol. He can speak informally to Jang Hyuk, piss him off, and die after he gets hit with sillicon'.

Lmao I love how they bring up older articles and bash them forever ~ guess idols acting really bothers them.

    ReplyDelete
  61. To be honest, I don't even like idols becoming actor, even if they take smaller roles. I know it is very economical cuz it sells overseas, but it feels like those rookie actors are not getting their chance fairly.

    ReplyDelete
  62. if the idols they cast would do a great job acting like Eunjung or Jiyeon for example, then I wont complain but theres some idols that you wanna kick them... seriously, if you see a rookie actor/actress does a better job then CAST HIM/HER!! thats how new talents/stars are born!! because someone gave them a chance!!

    ReplyDelete
  63. In the end they selected A-JAX leader Kim Hyeong Kon via auditions, so hey, give the guy a chance. He's an idol, but a rookie one, so producers did not merely select him for 'star power' ok?,
