Korean media tries to gouge American sentiment on Psy's anti-America song

So Newsen just released a report that's basically a compilation of random American netizen comments from an MTV article about Psy's anti-America song (give it to Newsen to think what Netizen Buzz does is anything job-worthy). I haven't been following the issue at all so can anyone tell me what the general sentiment is like over here?

Moreover, very few Psy articles have been ranking at all on this issue (like one or two a day) which is a surprise considering I usually see 5-10 on any random day. It seems like they're trying to make everything seem like it's going to be okay.

-

Article:
American response to Psy's anti-America song "Freedom of expression, no need for apology"

Source:
Newsen via Nate

1. [+874, -51] They're so different from our country

2. [+760, -53] They're an advanced country for a reason. They're so different from us.

3. [+742, -37] American netizens: Freedom of expression, Korean netizens: Freedom of hate

-

The comments Newsen pulled were apparently from this article: PSY Apologizes for Anti-U.S. Protests in 2004

- ARTISTS ARE NOT POLITICIANS AND SHOULDNT HAVE TO APOLGIZE FOR EXPRESSING THEMSELVES

- NO ONE PUT A GUN TO HIS HEAD AND FORCED HIM TO APOLOGIZE

- Honestly, who cares? Sing and dance for me. Who you are and what you believe are irrelevant, you're here to perform a show

- If I was angry I probably would of done the same thing. It doesn't matter if hes sincere or not. He gave an apology for everyone to hear which not many people would even have the courage to do. Personally, many Americans are stupid, uneducated, and don't know whats really going in foreign policy so I understand why they wouldn't forgive him. He did nothing wrong. He spoke out of anger, which we all do. We're not perfect

  1. lol saw the comment at MTV site, and the highest rate comment was only +17.
Newsen should have took the best rated comments at E! Online.... it's not as good as it may seen... lol XD

  2. jay park was run out of the country for writing that korea was gay on myspace, while psy called for the rape and murder of the families of american soldiers and he's still invited to perform at the christmas in washington concert that the president attends... ngl i'm feeling a little smug to be american rn.

    1. Me too. Proud to be an American.

  3. I don't really think Americans are reacting that much at all. So far I've only seen one MTV article, one report about it on E! news and then I saw it mentioned on CNN's news ticker (that thing at the bottom of the screen that puts little news messages throughout the day).

Americans clearly don't burn their celebrities at the stake (so to speak) like Koreans do, so this thing probably won't ruin Psy's career.

  4. from what I've seen a lot of comments are from non-American citizens saying things like "Americans still have no idea about how the rest of the world hate them" (probably angry teenagers/ps: I'm European myself and the popular "American resentment" was in the early 2000s [and war-related] so it seems quite over now)...and bring up the fact that America never apologized for invading countries and such
while Americans feel that his apology seems sincere, and other agree and suggest that he gives some of the many he made from Kangnam Style to an association related to US military
and most of the anger felt in some comments by American people is (I think) mainly due to the fact that the related articles (convinently=to make people talk) omitted the incidents regarding the 2 schoolgirls who got run over and the rapes that occured in South Korea at that time

  5. With the American public, it's either hot or cold.

If a celebrity does something bad or distasteful, either we don't really care and we forget about it in 1-2 days (but keep it in queue) or we REALLY care and hold it against that celebrity to their face or behind their backs (as I've noticed with Chris Brown's incident with Rihanna. People refuse to respect him like they once did and he will forever be called a 'Wife Beater').

  8. really? but PSY only wanted dead for American soldiers, their mother, fathers, daughters, sons... nothing more.

  9. Because Psy isn't exactly wrong (though his lyrics were pushing the extremes a bit), and there's a pretty large contingent of Americans sharing the same anti-war sentiments, no one is going to care here as long as people don't continuously draw attention to it. He was just reacting to a pretty tragic incident (the deaths of the missionary and 13-y.o. girls), plus he apologized, so what more can you ask?

No real media outlet minus a rather poorly written Huffington Post article has even bothered to pick up this story. This kind of issue only blows up if it's done by an American during a particularly "patriotic" timeframe (look up Dixie Chicks). Bill O'Reilly might have a 5 minute wankfest on Fox News if the day is slow, but that's about it.

  10. They picked the comments of kpop fangirls that were positive........

  11. at least Jay doesn't have a song like PSY called "fuck you bitch" ..
    totally mysogenistic

  12. the should have seen ontd's thread

  13. There have definitely been some negative comments. The comment section on every article I've seen eventually turns into a giant argument about the US going to war/entering countries. Half are like, "we're always where we shouldn't be", the other half are like "America fights for your freedom" etc etc. As far as PSY specifically is concerned, I don't think people will care enough to drag this out for more than a couple of days, if that. Most people probably don't even know about it. There were bigger stories, like the pranked nurse and the supreme court.

    ReplyDelete
  14. there are as many hate comments about psy as there are about obama.

    ReplyDelete
  15. The song is from the early 2000s too. You're right about anti-American sentiment was strong in the whole world during those days. In 2002 two Korean middle school students were killed by American soldiers. When American court found them not guilty it angered a lot of Koreans and that's one of the reasons Psy sang the song.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I have seen much more hate than praise. A lot of people are disappointed in him. My sisters husband is a Marine and he said Psy is banned in their home lol.

    ReplyDelete
  17. People are going crazy on the CNN comments page. I can't really tell how many people are supporting or attacking PSY, but either way this is going to be damaging for him.
Most people I know don't support US foreign policy, but they still have a huge amount of respect for individual American soldiers.

    ReplyDelete
  18. every news outlet has picked up this story. what are you talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  19. going by your logic lol. Have you not heard of Jay Park's whole mixtape? misogynistic all over the place.

    ReplyDelete
  20. They should have went to yahoo they would have close to 8,000+ (real) comments to pick from. lol (http://news(DOT)yahoo(DOT)com/psy-forever-sorry-anti-american-song-214836555--abc-news-music(DOT)html)

    ReplyDelete
  21. This issue isn't going to blow over in a couple days, at least not for PSY. This happened at a terrible time, right after the re-election of Obama, and butthurt Republicans are just drooling over an excuse to tear somebody apart. They're going to yack about it on TV and the radio, spread crap over Facebook and email, make stupid petitions and God know what else. And, oh yeah... all his new "friends" like Justin Bieber are going to back the fuck away from him like he just announced he has AIDS.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Pretty much this. People aren't too pleased based on this Yahoo! article here (http://news.yahoo.com/psy-forever-sorry-anti-american-song-214836555--abc-news-music.html). CNN is more reasonable since they're the more liberal group of American netizens and they're against military presence in other countries for the most part (http://www.cnn.com/2012/12/07/showbiz/psy-apology-irpt/index.html#cnn-disqus-area).

lol Newsen couldn't have picked a more biased article. Who really goes on MTV News other than tweens and really young people? CNN, Yahoo, NBC News, ABC News, etc. have more accurate representations of American opinions.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Americans have no room to speak.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Exactly. Plus, the fact that he targeted American soldiers in his song when Americans feel very strongly about their men and women in service, is not going to go over well for Psy. If I thought his future album was going to have mediocre sales before, then they're going to be positively disastrous now.

    ReplyDelete
  25. As a person who wasnt born in america but now lives in america, I don't support the US foreign policy. Either way insulting the American soldiers is very UN professional. Put it this easy, if an american artist was to say something about the Korean soldiers, Korea would be flipping tables. I honestly don't care if it wasn't his song and he was just performing it with whoever, it just wasn't necessary.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Idk. Someone posted one 3 hours ago:

"Classy apology - even though I personally don't blame him for his rap in the first place. Especially if he DID say "Bit-hes" and not "Yankees." Obviously, the rap was a response to those two specific Americans who killed the innocent Korean girls. Those Americans who, I feel, are not worthy of being compared to the rest of our servicemen who protect our country.

Psy only called those men out on their own horrible actions. Nothing too wrong with that, imho."

    ReplyDelete
  27. Lol. Please use your spellcheck or upgrade to a browser that does it for you.

    ReplyDelete
  28. Except for the ones that rape and murder innocent girls. Which is what the song in 2004 was written about...

People forget such stories so quickly because they're not posted on Allkpop or something.

    http://www.iacenter.org/Koreafiles/ktc-civilnetwork.htm

Don't forget that the US has a terrible history of committing crimes against citizens of Korea. And Japan, too. Now that I think about it.

  29. Jay who??? LOL
this is PSY first scandal, he's totally clean, a role model in Korea.

    1. Not really. He had quite a fair bit of scandals.

  30. so what you got out of psy's song is the supposed misogyny? um.

    ReplyDelete
  31. PSY:

"Kill their daughters mothers daughters-in-law fathers

Kill them slowly kill them painfully"

    ReplyDelete
  32. That's not true. He's also been involved with marijuana and I'm pretty sure he got sent back to the military after he tried to escape his mandatory military service.

    ReplyDelete
  33. most people are piss off i seen kpop fans trying to do damage control by blaming this all on America is quite hilarious

americans : can you shut the fuck
    koreaboos: HWAITING PSY OPPA!!! SARANGHAE!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. but it not like other countries are innocent either I know plenty of countries. As someone who serve in the military it very offensive we are not all raping and killing citizens.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Tens of thousands of Koreans shared the same opinion as PSY in 2004 and they were perfectly entitled to their opinion. But this isn't about free speech or what happened back then and who had the moral high ground..

The point is that PSY is making big bucks in the US now and some people are uncomfortable about this because it makes him look like a hypocrite or a sell-out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. yup sums it up According to KPOP since i am American I am not allow to feel offended even though I serve in the military. If it was there country they be all upset.

    ReplyDelete
  40. They chose the worst possible source to get their comments from. MTV....lmao what even.

    ReplyDelete
  41. You should check out the comments from the Huffington Post. Hot mess over there.

    ReplyDelete
  42. people have to get over it, they have their own view and so does he.

    ReplyDelete
  43. No, they're not. Article comments aren't an accurate representation of American sentiment. We don't have the same netizen culture

    ReplyDelete
  44. So did you actually read the lyrics to the whole song, or are you just copying and pasting phrases for the hell of it?

    ReplyDelete
  45. except for the obvious exception of his TEAM BREEZY.. ugh they make me so sick.. they justify how he treated rihanna by saying 'it was a mistake' & 'he's only human'.. & now theyre all happy that theyre back together because thats apparently what REAL LOVE is..

    da fuq..

    ReplyDelete
  46. Republicans are just mad because they're losing their Senate seats. LMAO

It's like... Yeah, you can talk all the shit about PSY you want. It's not like he's an American congressman who said that women who were impregnated during rape should be happy about it because it's a gift from God, or a Republican radio host who calls all women on birth control "whores" and "sluts"...

They're really wondering why they're losing the power in Congress? HAH.

    ReplyDelete
  47. It's not like he's making money off of a song about how great the US is. THAT would make it hypocritical.

But what is the song he's famous for called again...?

"Gangnam Style", right? Not "Let's All Immigrate to America because America is #1"?

The song he's famous for doesn't even allude to anything about America. It's a song about a dorky guy (probably one that looks like Psy) who like a sexy girl and he's trying to impress her.

Yes, he made a song with lyrics that disparaged America because members of their military raped and murdered two Korean girls and American courts found then NOT GUILTY.

I don't see what one has to do with the other.

    ReplyDelete
  48. That's only because it's been more than a day. The articles get taken over by the trolls when nobody cares about it. That's how HuffPo works. When it first came out, the comments were mostly supportive.

    ReplyDelete
  49. The Huffington Post article is from Reuters, FYI, so they're not responsible for how it's written. LOL You're right, though, no news outlet on TV has picked it up, so it's not such a big deal yet. Comments on the internet don't express American sentiment at all because it's mostly young people who are commenting. If people don't see it on TV, they probably don't know about it.

That CNN article is so suspect. People don't even realize that it's not written by an actual reporter. It's just written by some random person claiming to be a Korean American. What pisses me off is that some of the outlets that have picked the story up are using that person's translation of the song. They're not asking actual Korean speakers to translate it for them. Plus, the article gives none of the back story. Some of the more reasonable publications have done their research and explain it well, so people aren't as up in arms as it seems.

    ReplyDelete
  50. This is actually the ONLY reason that this issue blew up. This article on CNN that everyone is using as a reference was written in October. The reason that people are talking about it now is because Psy is performing for the President. It's not even about Psy. People just want to use his presence there as a jab at the President like they've done all of these years. Whatever it takes to make President Obama look bad is the goal for these people.

    ReplyDelete
  51. That's how most comments from news outlet sites work out (from what I've seen, anyway). But I saw the comments when the issue was first addressed and plenty of non-trolls were still outraged (and I don't blame some of them tbh). It may look like no one cares anymore but by now more than enough people know, so the damage has been done.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I didn't see they WERE accurate, but that comments on a legitimate news site are at least more accurate (or closer to the truth) than comments on a entertainment site.

    ReplyDelete
  53. They (DID NOT) raped those two girls. Nor was it murder, it was a accident. You know you should really (DO SOME RESEARCH) before going to any site trying to pretend you are smart. (http://english(DOT)peopledaily(DOT)co(DOT)cn/200206/14/eng20020614_97828(DOT)shtml)

    ReplyDelete
  54. nope, it's not just kpop fans... liberals also dgaf. check out the comments on the washington post, nymag, etc, most of them are in agreement with psy's condemnation of the abuse of human rights committed during the iraq war.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Most people I know don't care he said it but they do think he's lame for saying it but then wanting to make money off Americans.

    ReplyDelete
  56. And this is why Psy will be a one hit wonder. I was an advocate of him but that's just low. Even if it was freedom of speech but the generalization of the whole US army is just one big blow to US's honored army. Good bye Psy. You've had your millions in USDs. Now it's time to jump to another bandwagon. The question is who's bandwagon is next to hit the music scene?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Aww, after reading the comments here, I guess it's Psyonara for him in America:/

    ReplyDelete
  58. however, majority people only see that part of the lyrics. they didnt bother to even to understand the whole meaning of the lyrics anyway. that's why Psy still getting the hate...

    ReplyDelete
  59. Korean comments aren't an accurate reflection of Korean sentiment either. NB herself has addressed this in previous articles.

read this and educate yourselves, ignorant americans

    ReplyDelete
  61. You and I and all the posters here are familiar with South Korean culture, to various degrees. We understand the tensions the presence of the US military has caused there.

The average American person who bought PSY's song is less likely to be familiar with this or even not familiar at all. Many people are going to come away with the feeling "this Korean dude hates America but is happy to take our money and get superstar treatment".

I can't say enough that this isn't about right and wrong. Perception is everything and PSY is being seen by some people in a negative light now. I also believe that this may have other consequences, such as negativity towards other kpop acts promoting in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  62. The news still has not hit the news stations yet. There are only some articles on him but when this news is reported on TV, his career will be over. Their not gonna discuss the situation around this song, but rather just focus on it being an anti-american song.

    ReplyDelete
  63. the Gurdian is the most non biased and honest newspaper in England. thank you so much for posting this because people are clearly ignorant and are jumping to conlusions

    ReplyDelete
  64. "They're an advanced country for a reason"

Asia's ahead of us by 12 years in terms of technology >.> more advanced? hell naw

    ReplyDelete
  65. I'm well aware of why people hate the U.S. and I still think what he said was fucked up. Why bring innocent people into the equation, because someone else started it? That gets nothing done. Awkward of a UK site to chime in, too. Didn't the British stop at nothing to colonize most of the world back in the day...? (No offense to anyone in the UK, I'm just saying. Hating on the U.S.is so ~kewl~ that we forget about the fuck ups of other places as well.)

    ReplyDelete
  66. They're not more accurate just because the sites are legitimate news sites. You'll find the same insanity on NYTimes comment section that you'll find in the yahoo/youtube/mtv/etc.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I feel differently. You definitely will not see an elaborate discussion of American imperialism and an analysis of its military policy in the comments section of an MTV article like how it was on CNN. But there are too many factors to consider as well (e.g. the subject of the article, the demographic, the time of the day the article was published, etc.)

    ReplyDelete
  68. Neither does any other country in that case
