Mixed responses, I thought their performance was very good! The girls must be so tired... sigh. It's sad seeing them work so hard, but I can't help but envy them. Go SISTAR, you had a very good year, girls! Hope 2013 is similar too! ♥

ReplyDeleteThe title of that article and the responses are absolutely ludicrous. First of all, why focus on the underpants being exposed? Isn't that a given, considering the choreography? She's doing acrobatic moves across a floor. Gymnasts' leotards are even shorter than what Bora wore and it's not like she was wearing panties. It's a shame that people are taking away from this performance (which was amazing!) because they're focused on the attire. -__-

I honestly don't have a problem with Bora's attire. However, anyone who has an interest in Korean culture shouldn't be surprised at this reaction, as South Korea is on the conservative side, for better or worse. Because of this, Starship's stylists should have known better, especially with the choreography. Having Bora wear hotpants or something similar would have been an easy way to avoid this problem.

ReplyDeleteEven for South Korea I found it extra conservative, they pride themselves in Kim Yuna, but she also has worn singles in her attire, that gives an illusion of not wearing much but here bora is wearin shorts, and because of the movement it makes it look , very briefly like she is not wearing much. This time around it's an exaggerated reaction. She was great

Kim Yuna? I think a better example would be Son Yeonjae. There's not even an illusion there.
ReplyDeleteThe context of the dance also makes a difference. For example, Rainbow's dance for A was banned because it involved an undressing motion, even though all that was exposed was the navel. KARA's Pandora dance was also controversial because their jackets were removed to expose their backs. In each of these cases, the outfits themselves weren't controversial, but the actions surrounding them made it so. I'm willing to bet if Bora wore a Kim Yuna-type outfit from the start, this wouldn't have been controversial.

If the stylists knew that the dance required her to do black flips and go upside down and stuff maybe she should have worn tights which would have looked just as good with her outfit. This exposure was obviously intentional since was wearing a dress their multiple times she went upside down so they obviously her skirt would fall. With Korea being as conservative as it is maybe the stylist either put her in longer shorts since her dress long enough to cover them or tights to cover her legs. Also wearing hot pants like those can lead to unaccepted accidents like her pants could have ridden up especially with such complicated moves.
I watched the performance again with the comments in mind and then watched a few acrobatic gymnasts videos for comparison and still couldn't find anything worthwhile to talk about concerning Bora's clothes. Yeah, it definitely would've been a safer route for the stylists to have just have her wear tights but her hot pants are nowhere near as flashy or prone to "accidents" (which I've never seen, btw) compared to the leotards gymnasts wear all the time.

Well, she might be better than the female Korean gymnasts. Their team this past Olympics was fucking awful.
This is not a ballet performance, Cirque du Soleil, or a gymnastics competition.

It's about context. Keep that in mind.
