2012 MAMA: Zico

Readers' request. Is it sad that I'm noticing that articles about Zico alone get positive responses while the other members/Block B get dragged through hell. Can't win 'em all, I suppose.

Article: What was Zico like on top of the MAMA stage 'Block B leader force' [PhotoEn]

Source: Newsen via Nate

1. [+447, -54] But he really was good..

2. [+421, -53] His voice was covered up a lot by the sound system.. but he managed to fill up the entire stage. It was obviously his first time on a stage like that so I think it's quite amazing what he did. When he performed with Dynamic Duo at the end, his rap was really amazing..

3. [+403, -58] Definitely Zico

4. [+152, -4] Zico's the one that produced their collabo song at the end

5. [+148, -8] LOCO, Double K, and Dynamic Duo are all veterans but Zico managed to hold his ground and fill up the stage. He's a talent, you gotta recognize that.

6. [+146, -5] Okay, admitting that the kid's got talent. It's just sad that his production skills never get any spotlight.

7. [+129, -3] It's a tragedy that he got placed last in a rapper poll. ㅋㅋ What the? Eunhyuk's rap in Mr. Simple was seriously...

8. [+124, -3] Zico's rap was seriously no joke. If only the Block B kids would watch their mouths, they have the potential to be quite the talented group

9. [+121, -4] I honestly didn't expect much when I began watching because I knew he was an idol but he did well. Maybe he was nervous, but his pronunciation was a bit difficult to hear but his ability to stand on the same stage as veterans like that at his age is commendable.

10. [+118, -3] I didn't expect much as well since they introduced him as a 21 year old idol but was pleasantly surprised... I finally knew why people kept saying Zico's got the talent ㅋㅋ This kid, he's gonna be something

  3. A bit OT, but Mama seriously needs to move back to Korea. Not only there's barely any "Asian Music Awards" but rather "Korean Music Awards", the whole moving the location is doing no good. Artists have no time to rehearse and there's a big chance of attracting biased fans. The sound system also sucks majorly, and I don't think it did before they started moving locations.
Anyway, Zico was really great! I do wish the sound was a lot better, but he really did hold his own. Gaeko owned the stage though, his rap was freaking amazing.

  5. I love Zico, I really do. If anyone says he's not talented, they're just haters.

  6. A lot of netizens felt the same way. People did not understand why a Korean music ceremony had to be held overseas and that it was an embarrassment, especially since mostly Korean artists were awarded anyway.

  7. knetizen can write good things too
I am really proud of Zico

  8. So proud of this boy, and I'm glad he's getting a bit of the recognition he deserves. Is the comment that he produced their last collab song true?

  9. Yeah. Eunhyuk won the "Most Charismatic Rapper" poll. And Zico was in last place.

  10. yeah it should not be called asian music awards.. they could have at least invited some japanese artists like last year.. maybe namie amuro or something...

  11. "This kid, he's gonna be something"
My heart is swelling all corny-like, because this is so true c:

  12. This is progress. The fact that they recognize Zico's talent and aren't mindlessly bashing him is progress. Now if only they could do that in regards to the other members and recognize Block B as a whole, then that would make me happy. But I just see this as baby steps. Who knows, this could help bring positive light to Block B.

  13. Ji Ah Co is the man.. Real HEPHAP that's what it is

  14. yes he did produce the song with pop time and nusoul

  15. looks like his fans got to the article before the regular netizens...

    ReplyDelete
  16. That's awesome. Did they tweet about it or was it in another article?

    ReplyDelete
  17. That are they don't know talent when they see it.

    ReplyDelete
  18. he really did hold his own with the other veterans.

  19. talent is talent, ppl who don't know who he is and are watching for the first time should be able to see that. Same goes to the rest of those on the hip hop special stage; it was just overflowing with raw talent, no overblown theatrics and all the frills, just good old rapping done well with great on-stage chemistry. In terms of actual skill, that stage was one of the best of the night, along with Roy Kim, Adam Lambert and perhaps Wang Leehom.

  20. Even antis won't desecrate a Zico article 'cause his talent is just too much for them to hate on.

  21. yes, gaeko is boss, really liked double k's performance as well.

  22. Block B needs a group venture to expose them in a positive light. They were starting to get it with their music show performances but then journalists had to to screw it all up with their misconstrued articles.

If only they'd give them the chance to expand more...perhaps on variety or a more prestigious show like Sketchbook or Immortal Song 2, I think that would push them in a more positive direction.

  23. These don't sound like fan comments...just the portion of netizens that put their appreciation of talent above any preconceived notions they may have of him and Block B. It's been like that with every Zico article so far: positive comments praising his talents.

"8. [+124, -3] Zico's rap was seriously no joke. If only the Block B kids would watch their mouths, they have the potential to be quite the talented group" Can you really say that's a fan's comment?

  24. (I'm supposed to be studying but then Zico happened so I'm back xD)

Words cannot express how proud I was when I heard he'd be performing with his role models. While I wasn't too familiar with Dynamic Duo and Double K before, I learned soon enough that they're REALLY well-known rappers in K-Hip Hop and they have seniority so the fact that he was able to perform with his seniors made me SO happy and watching him command the stage with such awesome presence in REAL-TIME was by far the best thing I'll take from MAMAs this year. I'm so happy people are realizing that this kid has a gift and that he's a rapper first, and an idol second, ALWAYS.

I really do hope that the recognition he receives can open more doors for Block B. Antis take one look at the name "Block B" in the title and they desecrate the articles but if Zico can attract positivity WITH Block B in the title, then there's still hope.

  25. Yeah. They rocked the red carpet though. Hopefully their small appearance at MAMA garnered them some positive exposure.

  26. some of them are jerk ...

    ReplyDelete
  27. I can guarantee you a lot of those comments aren't from fans.

    ReplyDelete
  28. It was the best performance of the night.

    ReplyDelete
  29. yea i would agree with that (i would rank roy kim's and adam lambert's performances on the same level); it's rare that authentic rap gets represented properly in award shows like this without being swarmed by rapper-wannabes. Disappointed that ppl don't bother paying attention to this and prefer spazzing over performances that are a greater display of special effects and crowd-hyping than actual skill.

  30. Someone said BEAST started out like that too and now look where they are :D They're definitely moving in the right direction!

  32. Zico did his thing and more out there. I was a proud BBC watching him on stage. I just wish for next year the whole group can get on stage or at least Kyung get his fair share in a hip hop performance.

  33. They should go back to their MKMF days

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah b2st performed a big bang song their debut mama show

    ReplyDelete
  35. the only performance i can enjoy wholeheartedly. bigbang, epik high, and psy used too much props and effect that when you strip them all, the perf isn't that all. too much "swagg"-ness that they felt cheesy.

  36. BLOCK B AND ZICO, this guys are really talented, and their music is good...my new secon favorite group, they will be the next big thing

    ReplyDelete
  37. omg i remember that....

  44. zico rapping is glorious. damn i want to hate him but i cant. why wont u let me just hate u z.i.c.o

    ReplyDelete
  45. Yes. I agree with that. Adam Lambert and Roy Kim were amazing. Besides those 3 performances, a lot were lackluster.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Aww...that must've been hard for him :/ But he's in a relatively good place right now. I just wish they gave him a bit more time to grieve his father's passing. Cube is cold, man.
