They say they're mad at idols who go to college because they won't attend (since they have idol schedule) but then Sunmi who stopped ALL her activities to go to college is still hated, even more than idols who go to college at the same time? Where is the logic? and why are they asking if she attends school? of course she does, she has nothing else to do!

Do someone need to have an acting career to be able to attend an acting college? Who thinks like that? it makes no sense. If she wants she can study acting, I'm pretty sure most of the students there are not celebrities and never acted before.
I'm so shocked and surprised that Sunmi is even more hated than any other celebrity who goes to college, as if Sunmi did something wrong compared to them? She didn't. The long hate comments she gets are just as long as the ones GD, Seungri or T-ara get, it's as if Sunmi got into a big scandal or something.
Fuck these netizens, no matter what they'll never be happy.
Never acted before? Are you ignoring high school drama clubs and classes ohtside? I'm sure lots if them are more talented than Sunmi, that girl can't dance, sing and express her emotions nicely on stage and in mv, she is just not entertainer material

ReplyDeleteThe reason why they're so angry is because each year, there's only a certain amount of slots open per program in each university. It's extremely competitive, with acting and theatre programs being the most selective.
ReplyDeleteThere are high school seniors who aren't idols and don't have money who truly want to study acting at a university but are unable to because idols take one of the spots simply because they are famous. (By comparison, universities in the US aren't like that; everyone has to apply and take the same tests and go through the same admissions process.)
What's even more annoying to Korean students is that these idols are going to college to study acting... when it's not even necessary for them. Idols are given acting roles in dramas, CFs, movies, and musicals ALL the time without having been formally educated and companies have acting tutors that work with them before and after they debut.
It'd make MORE sense if idols wanted to go to university to study business or something, but they're basically going to school... to take acting classes... that they don't have to be there for.
This is the time of the year where people are still talking about college admissions and entrance exams. Even though the pictures are not uploaded by Sunmi herself, she is the one that gets the heat. Korean & International Wonderfuls still love her and they've been holding a lot of events for Sunmi. Those hateful comments are probably just from the general netizens.

ReplyDeleteSunmi is unfortunately seen as a traitor, after the Wonder Girls US promotions, she left the group, abandoning the ship instead of sticking to it to the end. After a while fans and netizens accepted the fact she'd be studying, but they expected her to get into college by entrance exams not using her past connection of being a member of the Wonder Girls as leverage.

Doesn't matter how much you study when those in charge choose to give away a spot to an idol simply because they're an idol. They're angry because her getting special treatment takes away from those who had legitimately earned a spot. She took what was someone else's.

When you look at the number of kpop idols who are majoring in Theatre in various Korean universities right now:
Yuri, Yoona, Seohyun, Sooyoung, Eunjung, Goo Hara, Nicole, Minho, Sunye, Gayoon, Dongwoon, Jonghyun, Kim Hyung Joon, Park Jungmin, TOP, Daesung, Seungri, etc. (There are a lot that I'm missing.)
That's not even including the ACTORS who are currently enrolled at universities as Theatre/Film majors, like Park Shin Hye and Kim Soo Hyun who are both theatre majors at Chung Ang University. That's at least TWO spots in the universities theatre program that were taken away by people who don't even need it because they are already successful, AWARD-WINNING actors.
I don't agree with K-Netizens all the time, but on this particular subject I fully understand their anger.
Korean university admissions are veeerrrrry different from how American universities choose which students are accepted or not.
ReplyDeleteAmerican universities don't give preference to anyone except for athletes that can be recruited onto their university teams. That means that celebrities, like Natalie Portman and Emma Watson, had to take the SATs, meet the educational requirements, and fill out an application just like everyone else who applies to an Ivy League school like Harvard or Brown.
I think she understands this already. She was saying 98% of the students aren't celebrities so even if there's competition and it's super hard, if one works the best, it can get into the 98%. Of course if the person doesn't get into it, he can blame the 2% of celebrities, but yeah... in the end it's not like these colleges are full of celebrities, there are way more normal students. But people will always find someone to blame if they fail, and here's it's the celebrities.
ReplyDeleteEven if Sunmi took the entrance exam, they don't care, it's even worse for them. Sunmi actually left WG and then study for some months before taking that exam, almost a year. So I believe she did work. Now if she wasn't a celebrity, would she be accepted? God knows, but all celebrities get favor treatment, and at least one thing Sunmi did is to stop her career and attend college, as well as study for the exam and pass it. It's still not 100% fair but it's better than all these idols who aren't taking the exam at all, who get accepted and don't attend college. However netizens seem to treat Sunmi 10 times worse than these idols which is why it doesn't make much sense. and saying it's unfair because idols can get into acting even without studying... True, but when idols do this, aren't netizens complaining about the idol being bad actor because (s)he didn't study it? then what is the solution? None.

I am glad someone finally pointed this out about Sunmi. Wonderfuls are always showing lots of support for her because they are her fans. But general Koreans don't like her. She caused disruption to her team and she isn't even studying now.

ReplyDeleteShe took something from someone else. Did you completely miss the point? She wasn't deserving of her spot to begin with! They shouldn't lose what was supposed to be theirs because of idol receiving special treatment. It isn't fair and the added pressure shouldn't be put on the deserving student to do better. They did their part and it was stolen from them by an idol.
