Article: Has Hong Suk Chun committed a crime?
Source: OSEN via Naver
Article that talks about how he's widely recognized as a talented actor but how the fact that he's openly gay is making the industry closetheir doors on him. He had previously revealed on an episode of 'Radio Star' this month that he was in discussion for a casting in a historical drama starring Kim Tae Hee (Jang Ok Jung) but a few days later, the drama's producers came out and announced that "It is not the truth at all."
The journalist doubts he would've even mentioned it if he really wasn't in discussion for a role and mentions how Hong Suk Chun has been denied roles throughout his career since coming out.
1. [+167, -13] Suk Chun hyung is not someone we can hate or speak about any way we want to. He has his own successful restaurant and is trying to make the most of his life. He seems like a fun person and definitely a way better person than the people that refuse to watch TV because he's on the screen.
2. [+155, -8] Gay or not, all he wants to do is act, what does his sexual preference have anything to do with it?
3. [+121, -15] So many weird people in this world... If you don't want to watch him, then don't. Don't sit there saying he's dirty or whatever.
4. [+108, -7] I don't like gays but I think it's wrong that they're not letting him work... The producers were out of line announcing it to the media like that. What does that make Hong Suk Chun then, a liar?
5. [+104, -9] This is how pathetic Korea is

I'm surprised no one commented about crappy idol actors getting roles when good actors like him are rejected for reasons like this....
ReplyDeleteCan't believe he still has to go through shit like that...
ReplyDeleteactually i feel quite surprise on how korean not bashing him...korean are known from their upright believe..bullying,marijuana,photo scandal seems more serious than gay in korea..i'm not haters..but just surprise!!!!!lol
ReplyDeleteThe facts that he is denied to starring in any dramas since he's stated he is openly gay actually reflect the truth that he is getting "bash".
ReplyDeleteWhy am I not surprised...
ReplyDeletePeople's sexual preference shouldn't matter in business.
ReplyDeleteIt doesn't change how hard they work, or how much talent they have.
I prefer him being on screen rather than crappy idols who dont know how to act
ReplyDelete"This is how pathetic Korea is"
ReplyDeleteSometimes, yes. Seriously pathetic.
lol true
ReplyDeleteThe Korean entertainment industry are not as professional as they claim to be, letting things such as these affect their decisions. They have a long way to go~
ReplyDeleteyup..i see your point!
ReplyDeleteowh...that how it is..so he is already being bash..lol
ReplyDeletecompletely agree !
ReplyDelete[+155, -8] Gay or not, all he wants to do is act, what does his sexual preference have anything to do with it? << THIS!
ReplyDeleteIt's like the comment #4...a lot of people in Korea are uncomfortable around gays, and even the term "gay" is a fairly new term in Korean society, but you can clearly see the injustice in this situation. It's not like he wants to star in a gay dating show on TV; he just wants to act, and that has nothing to do with his sexuality.
ReplyDeletebaffles me how fans pair their idols within their own groups, goes crazy over fanservices, writes homo-smut about their idols but disregards a gay actor. hypocrites at its finest.
ReplyDeleteOff the top of my head, Ian McKellen, Zachary Quinto, Neil Patrick Harris. A cursory search on google of openly gay actors will give you a more comprehensive list, I'm sure.
ReplyDeletei'm french and i don't know all of these actors,i said very famous like Brad pit and such i know Korea is far from having the same perspective of gay like america but Hollywood is not in favor of gay people either they don't have a lot of role in cinema not often the main lead etc
ReplyDeleteneil patrick harris (HIMYM)?
ReplyDeleteyeah a comedy, but is a gay would have a role like george clooney or brad pitt in movies where he is the main lead and seduce every girl? i don't think so
ReplyDeleteIt's probably there somewhere.
ReplyDeleteIan McKellen has played the roles of Gandalf in LOTR and The Hobbit; Magneto in the X-Men movie series; Sir Leigh Teabing in The Da Vinci Code.
ReplyDeleteZachary Quinto has played the role of Spock in the 2009 remake of Star Trek; Gabriel in the tv series Heroes; Adam Kaufman in the tv series 24.
Neil Patrick Harris is the actor who currently plays the lead role of Barney Stinson in the tv series How I Met Your Mother.
You are so hilariously wrong about Hollywood "not being accepting" of gay actors... There are a whole slew of openly gay and lesbian actors and actresses...

LOL
I mean it's cool that you're French, but don't say you're ignorant about Hollywood in one sentence and then follow it up with a statement about Hollywood that you're trying to pass off as a fact. It makes you look stupid.
obviously u never watch how i met your mother. neil plays barney who seduce girls all the time in the show and he is one of the main lead of the show.
ReplyDeletethank you lol I think Sonia is a young innocent fangirl who knows nothing about real life, "100% sure of that" lol
ReplyDeleteopen up your mind, honey.
I think you're completely missing the point. The comment that the person you're replying to is quoting refers to the fact that Korea, as a whole, is prejudiced against homosexuals. The part where it's "pathetic" is that it's so obvious that there is a stigma against gay people in Korea that Korea's entertainment industry reflects that by rejecting a truly talented actor because of his sexual preference.
ReplyDeleteHollywood is extremely accepting of homosexuals; whether they're actors, actresses, writers, producers, directors, singers, fashion designers, etc. etc. Hollywood, as a whole, is one of the biggest supporters of gay rights—especially in America where this has become a huge political issue.
Gay actors might not play the parts of the "man who seduces women", but that's really because American directors actually cast actors and actresses who can play the part. Did it ever occur to you that maybe a gay actor has never chosen to play the part of a "ladies man" because he simply doesn't want to? Probably not.
Take Ian McKellen for example. He is very famous throughout Europe and America (I'm genuinely surprised that you've never heard of him) and in the past, he has been cast in the male lead for several movies and tv dramas throughout his long career and he has been openly gay since 1988, long before his career as an actor really took off.
Cynthia Nixon, an openly gay actress, played the role of Miranda Hobbes on the very famous HBO series Sex and the City for six years and twice more in the SATC movies. Miranda was a female lawyer who had relationships, most of them sexual on some level, with MEN.
It's fine to be ignorant of things; not everyone knows about Hollywood. But can you please do us all a favor and think before you post? <__<
I'm glad that people are supporting him now. And the top comment made me smile, that guy is so right.
ReplyDeleteKorea is homophobic.
ReplyDeleteActually, in Germany there is a gay actor, just a small screen actor as much as I know but he plays also roles where he is in love with a woman.. I don't see a problem there..
ReplyDeletebecause not all koreans are as close-minded as their society as a whole? specially if they're young
ReplyDeleteI saw him in drama but he wast that great at act ;s
ReplyDeleteTotally agree w/your whole comment especially the last paragraph.
ReplyDeleteNeil Patrick Harris plays a playboy in pretty much most of his roles, he plays alongside a lot of women. Ian McKellen is god damn Magneto and GANDALF, two of the biggest badasses out there. Ellen DeGeneres is the biggest daytime talk show host behind Opera and she's married to girl. America doesn't really care if a celebrity is gay.
ReplyDeletethank u for the information i didn't know all of this actor i wasn't much aware of that
ReplyDeleteyou thnink wrong i know they are a lot of gay actor's but they are not as famous as straight acotrs that was my point you can corect me without being rude
ReplyDeletei don't you are right thank you for clarifies things for me
ReplyDeleteno need to be rude correct me that it i can accept my mistakes no need to feel superior
ReplyDeleteThis is what people don't get You don't have to like the gays you just have to respect them just like you are supposed to respect everyone else !!
ReplyDeleteam more surprised of netizens' comments .. I guess people are opening up to the idea of a gay actor :p
ReplyDeletethose aren't necessarily the same people who would be bigoted against a gay actor.
