Article: On standby for 24 hours for celebrity clothes... but make less than a part time job

Source: Hankyeore via Nate

Article talks about the jobs of celebrity stylists who are basically on call 24/7 while being paid less than minimum wage or not even paid at all. Idol stylists usually work in worse conditions. Most of their day to day job requires going to 30-40 different clothing stores and picking up and returning up to 50 different outfits all day.

93.6% of stylists are women
78.3% are in the 20-25 age range
52.4% work between 8-12 hours a day
40.7% work over 12 hours a day
65.7% make between 500,000 won to 1 million won a month

1. [+682, -21] You need to start looking for other part time work if you're working 8 hours a day and barely making a million won a month ㅡㅡ These stylists are being worked like slaves for minimum wage

2. [+678, -29] These comments are ridiculous. It's fair to expect to be paid for the work that you're doing, why blame it on the people doing the work? The industry is known for never paying their staff properly. Do you think these stylists are truly that big of a fool to stick around the job if they have other opportunities? Obviously they need to do it to gain experience.

3. [+290, -265] But did they not know that these would be the conditions before they got into the field? They should quit if they aren't even being paid minimum wage, why hold on to it?

4. [+230, -11] I don't get why the stylists are getting hate for sticking with their jobs. You should be hating the companies who aren't paying them and treating them like this... Obviously these stylists are passionate about their jobs if they're working hard without being paid what they're owed.

5. [+43, -1] The celebrity industry really is only livable for the big CEOs and top celebrities. The staff work night and day through all the dangerous stuff for such little wages while the stars are out there getting paid hundreds of thousands for appearing in an episode.

6. [+34, -0] Love how celebrities are always making political statements but stay quiet on issues like this ㅋㅋ

7. [+32, -5] Makes me respect Park Myung Soo since he's so known for always taking care of his coordis and paying them well

8. [+27, -0] But is it so wrong that these stylists joined the field even knowing the conditions? They have no choice if this is their dream, but they shouldn't be expected to put up with unfair conditions. What's wrong should be fixed, the blame shouldn't be placed on them for choosing this field.

9. [+22, -2] It's sad that there are some stylists who get so cocky and think they're special too because they get to ride around in vans with celebrities but reality is that they make 700,000 won a month

10. [+21, -0] If any of you are stylists because you like celebrities, just quit ㅋ titles like 'stylist' and 'managers' are just flashy names for slave labor. You're basically just waiting staff for these entertainment clowns ㅋㅋ The celebrity industry is known for being a dark pit of thugs and trashy people. I know so many people around me who tried to get into the industry as stylists and managers only to come out with a bunch of debt ㅋ
