'Child prodigy' Song Yoo Geun confesses it has been a lonely journey

Article: Song Yoo Geun, "In Korean society, people become envious of you if you're talented in something... it has been lonely for me" confession

Source: TV Report via Naver

His wiki page here.

The show did an update on where he has been recently and when asked how he has been doing, he replied, "There have been a lot of times that I was lonely. In general, if you're gifted or talented in the Korean education system, you're either separated from the other students or the target of envy. I think it's important that these students are given more educational opportunities and materials with good teachers."

-

1. [+740, -13] He's right. Finland has the #1 education in the world and they're the complete opposite of us. Competition is left to yourself and they promote social activities. That's the difference between their education system and ours. There's a lot of envy and jealousy in college, society too... Instead of focusing on differentiating the gifted from the not gifted, we should be focusing our education on fostering more gifted talents. With our current system, we're unable to discover hidden talents and are throwing them away.

2. [+670, -13] As the Korean saying goes, even your family will be jealous over your success..

3. [+506, -12] He's right. You can tell with Nate, can't you? ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ

4. [+40, -0] Sharing your happiness brings envy and sharing your sadness becomes a weakness someone else will use against you.

5. [+35, -1] I still remember when he went to college and he couldn't adjust so the city provided a small container sized research lab for him to study in that he could bike to every day. I lived in the area and watched him bike and wondered why in the world he had to be born in a country like ours... This country is in no way prepared to be raising a prodigy.

6. [+35, -0] If there's a gifted kid, we need to be fostering him but instead we're busy trying to stomp him down ㅋㅋㅋ

7. [+35, -0] Having a kid like him in your school will only make parents go nuts because it makes their own kids not stand out as much

8. [+31, -2] He grew up so well... Please help the advancement of our sciences. Fighting.

9. [+29, -0] Koreans are rotten. You can tell just by the old saying that even your family will be jealous of your success..

10. [+25, -0] He's visually handsome but he looks so exhausted ㅠ Find strength, prodigy!!

So much truth in that sentence.
I honestly would hve never wanted to be that smart, the cons are too much

  8. As someone who has always been in the top percentile of students in my grade, getting proper support for your abilities is invaluable. My former high school had an extensive AP program and great teachers that challenged us to be creative and independent thinkers. My new school doesn't really provide opportunities for more gifted students to really challenged ourselves, and I'm bored and not learning much. Fostering and supporting talent is one of the most important things a society can do. Don't hold everyone to the same standards, and let kids develop their own talents.

  9. are u dumb??? i've seen these kind of scenario first hand,,, duh!!!

    ReplyDelete
  10. I probably do not like youApril 16, 2015 at 3:07 AM

or if you look different or thinks differently, you'll get alienated in that society.

    ReplyDelete
  11. I mostly hate people who use other people's weaknesses against them and make fun of them for things they're insecure about.

    ReplyDelete
  12. Just read his wiki page and whoa he's like a present day Einstein.

    ReplyDelete
  13. wait.. are you calling me dumb because I wasn't attacking you I'm so confused

    ReplyDelete
  14. oops.. sorry

  15. Its not only korea the genius prodigies live a very sad lonely life where they feel like they dont fit anywhere. The child has to give up on his childhood, stop playing, laughing but only studies. its only for the pride of the parents especially in the asian countries. i remember reading about this malaysian prodigy girl who went to college at a really young age and she didnt fit in. now she is a prosititute and hates her parents for destroying her life. her dad was very strict and its always studying for her. i felt really bad about it.

    ReplyDelete
  16. but I also don't like it when schools assign all the supportive teachers to AP/Honors classes and give the students in regular classes shitty teachers who half-ass everything.

    ReplyDelete
  17. LOL It's okay.
Just to clear things up, I was saying "are you 5?" to the parents who complain about everything at the office!

    ReplyDelete
  18. prostitute? can you give us whole story? its like her world turn upside down.

    ReplyDelete
  19. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-550549/How-child-prodigy-Oxford-130-hour-prostitute.html

    ReplyDelete
  20. so you should go to a school that can give you the opportunities instead of trying to change the system of their education in your current school

    ReplyDelete
  21. that's kind of.. sad

    ReplyDelete
  22. I dropped out of college because I was bored and not being challenged. I'm trying to work up the strength to go back but it was really miserable for me. When I first started I thought it was funny that I didn't have to even buy the books to pass the class but now I kind of think its just depressing. So yeah challenging and fostering gifted kids is VERY important, or else they'll just waste the gift and toss it out.

    ReplyDelete
  23. poor kid. hwaiting.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Please GOD protect this child/kid from any bad things & give him a happy ending. I read lot bout some child prodigy who turns out taking drugs later, suicide, prostitutes & do some other bad things later.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Reading this in a finnish school...

    ReplyDelete
  26. The parents of these gifted children must let their children enjoy their childhood while studying at the same time.

    ReplyDelete
  27. She is not a prostitute anymore. From what I read, Malaysia gov send few support people to help her.

    ReplyDelete
  28. What are you talking about? People talk shit about rich people evading taxes all the time because it's an actual issue. It's quite clear that SHG only paid her fees because she got caught, and the "attorney" excuse is bull. I'm not saying SHG is the bad person, I'm just saying that y'all seem awfully biased. I remember when Lee Soo Man was caught evading taxes and people acted like he was the worst human being.

And about the "entitled" thing you're trying to pull, her fanboys probably wish she had a more diverse image in Korea too. There's nothing wrong with wanting that. You're trying to make a mountain out of a molehill with that issue and making a molehill out of a mountain with tax evasion. It hasn't even been that long, and she evaded for 3 whole years mind you.

    ReplyDelete
  29. Yup, the taxes will follow her, nonetheless i'm actually looking forward to her kbs drama, i think it'll be on kbs.

Like pls is it so wrong for her fanboys to wish she would take off her clothes in Korea too come on now

    ReplyDelete
  40. 4. [+3,772, -705] With the bravery you had to muster for that bed scene, how about you use it to pay your taxes too

lol She already paid it and apologized publicly.

I don't know how credible the source is but seems like Youngbae scolded seungri and they talked about it on a show they guested so I guess it's true? :/ but what else seungri did aside that? What made people think YG unfollowed seungri cause he's creating trouble again....

SHK is a professional and although she made a mistake , i believe she is such a valuable actress and of course a huge star that she can defiantly overcome this situation with grace.

  52. X D most relevant comment here tbh

    ReplyDelete
  53. the chinese must have payed huge $$$$$$$$$$$ for that "bed" scene if kntes say she refused them in korea ><

    ReplyDelete
  54. This reminds me of Graham on the show Child Genius. He's so young and incredibly gifted in geography. He's memorized the entire US atlas meaning he knows every road and highway and every detail of a hurricane just by looking at satellite pictures but hates almost every other subject out there, making it that much harder for him to get scholarships when he's not good at everything. His parents can't afford to challenge him academically, which was why they signed up for the show, hoping they could win and use the college scholarship money towards providing better educational opportunities for him right now. He was my favorite contestant because you could see how much he loved geography and he has such a sweet personality.

    ReplyDelete
  55. *whispers* because she got caught LOL

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yeah, but let's not forget that she has a lot of money so she let accountants do their job. Though Im sure she will be more careful next time.

    ReplyDelete
  57. Avoiding taxes is technically stealing from the state, and taxes are meant to go back to the people, so why would people, who lawfully pay them just let go of this? This isn't just a dating scandal.

    ReplyDelete
  58. ah~ people love to read between the lines even when there aren't any to begin with...

    ReplyDelete
  59. But the exact reason why she's passing on the promotions was because of the hate she got isnt it.. which is really also utterly unnecessary since it's her personal life and only for her to judge upon. Indeed she's a lot younger but she is an adult!

    ReplyDelete
  60. In our country, geniuses are somewhat special... What I mean is that they're usually quiet so, our teachers will make a way so that he'll be included in 'ordinary' student's activities. so that, he'll not feel alone and as might as well enjoy his/her 'kid' life.

    ReplyDelete
  61. yup. I'm convinced that no one on NB actually reads the comments and just assumes racism after seeing the word "chinese."

Her fanboys are talking about how they want her to have a more diverse image in Korea as well instead of just participating in cliche dramas

    ReplyDelete
  62. its nice that she is happy and got to have her freedom.

    ReplyDelete
  63. It's always like this with gifted children everywhere but the thing that bothers me the most is that most of them don't experience a proper childhood. They just study ALL THE TIME

    ReplyDelete
  64. Wow that is cool. i wish all teachers were like this.

    ReplyDelete

  68. Yes. That's why I select people whom I share my dreams and aspirations with.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Yeah, there's obviously more to what was let to know to the public. It doesn't make sense to make her take a break when she wasn't injured.

The internet comment reason doesn't convince me. She's been getting that since those pics were leaked in 2013, it affects her now?

  78. a lot of child prodigies here were exposed to the public because Promil (a formula milk brand) started an Ad Campaign in the 90s using a lot of child prodigies, some of them included young science enthusiast, chess grandmasters, ballerinas and painters. they were all referred to as Promil Kids. the Ad implies that these kids were all prodigies because they consumed Promil milk as babies... i remember one of them is now a photographer but she was ridiculed a few years back for flunking her calculus subject in college. they all questioned her 'genius and prodigy' title

still mad at Promil for using these kids for the brand, they never even supported one of them

    ReplyDelete
  79. He kind of had to give up his childhood. He stopped being a kid and became an adult and I think that's why the adjustment to his current situation is that much harder. There's no doubt he lost the opportunity to make friends he would've met if he went to elementary, middle school, highschool. People in uni are grown ups and he's had to act like a grown up when he's really just a kid. I find that really sad.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  81. me, exo and our galaxyApril 16, 2015 at 3:44 AM

    yes. so?

    ReplyDelete
  82. lol @ the average morons in Korea trying to talk about "prodigy." that's like some fat 200lb 5 foot 9 inch white guy trying to tell Lebron how to play basketball

people simply do not understand what "prodigy" is.

the problem may be developmental... as in how society allocates resources but the main reason why these "prodigies" like this kid look "done with all these shits" is because in fact "prodigies" as dumb netizens think of don't really exist in large part.

most of these guys get bitter and burnt out because as they reach adulthood they realize that the "great expectations" that they've been told is their birthright actually will never happen. they simply do not have the TALENT or the ABILITY and NEVER HAD THEM to be great figures.

when people talk about prodigies, they usually just mean kids who can do stuff that adults can do. for example a 7 year old who can do college calculus etc. but that actually has very little value. it just means his developmental stages are more advanced. the problem is that people extrapolate out from that point... like "if a kid at 7 can do 18 year old math... at 21 he can do THREE TIMES HARDER MATH THAT HASN'T EVEN BEEN INVENTED.

but it doesn't work like that. a kid who can do college math at 7 more than likely is simply able to do it earlier, it doesn't mean he'll advance further. it's like prodigies in sports. because kids develop differently the kids who are the best players in 7th grade do not necessarily become the best college players, and those players do not always become the best NBA players. each developmental stage involves a new set of challenges and development spurts.

basically unless a kid is BETTER than the best college professors at age 7 he isn't a true prodigy, as in an actual historical prodigy like Mozart or Michael Jackson. being better than other kids at an early age means very little. for example even Michael Jackson was one of many child stars... the fact his musical ceiling as an adult was so much higher probably has 0 to do with "prodigy" and more about his development as an adult artist. Einstein had Fs in school. Michael Jordan got cut from his high school team.

the main problem is the idea of prodigy. this kid was never a true prodigy. he was just an advanced kid.

Forget about Papa YG and YG Family,he is first and foremost a businessman. Maybe he doesn't see the potential in him as a solo artist because lets be honest with the army coming up,after this comeback Big Bang next comeback as a whole will take many years, they will soon be only be able to do sub-units and solos.

Can you imagine working so hard and having more than half taken away? I understand they're rich so they still have plenty left, but it's still a lot.

i am not sure about that. his case is more complicated. if he is really misogynists (and not someone with a horrible taste in jokes) then i am not sure what his apology mean. does it mean he understands his way of thinking was wrong or does it mean he is sorry that he said those thinks on tv and heart people feelings although he believes they are indeed true and just not suitable to be said on tv? there are so many other factors to think about before you can talk about that case.

    ReplyDelete
  110. sorry but i think this answer is the biggest load of nonsense. you're using semantics to reach a false conclusion. you don't even have all of your facts right. einstein wasn't a wunderkind, but he did well in school, most particularly the maths and sciences.

song yoo geun isn't just some kid who is doing calculus. he had an exceptional grasp of abstract thinking despite his age and could understand aspects of quantum theory when he was 8.

this guy is a human phenomenon and the reason most child geniuses like himself burn out is due to societal pressures and psychological and emotional issues related to being so far advanced intellectually beyond every person they meet. it has nothing to do with a lack of talent or intelligence.

    ReplyDelete
  111. Ayy careful, you don't wanna trigger anyone here

    ReplyDelete
  112. I don't think they're that different tbh. They both apologized, probably not sincerely, over issues because they got caught. Does SHG sincerely feel sorry and now believe that taxes should be paid? It's questionable considering she evaded for three years. People are biased, and that's really it.

[+13, -3] Seungri is honestly not needed in Big Bang. YG's worst decision ever was casting Seungri and the luckiest artist in YG is Seungri.

[+33, -6] Park Bom at least sings well, I don't even know why Seungri was chosen when you compare his looks and talents to current idols

Thank you. Still today i cant believe they chose Seungri over Hyunseung. I guess YG regrets that so much now. He grew up to be a talented young man without almost any scandals, a powerful performer and dancing machine with a breathtaking voice. And Seungri had the fame and money go over his head and grew to be the trouble child without any special talent. I guess there some things you cant foresee even if youre YG.

  122. Yess he following again with another YG artis ..you guys need to calm down right now

    ReplyDelete
  123. Lol. Then in that case, in the same fashion as you, did SHG really apologize because she felt bad about evading taxes or did she apologize to save her behind. If she really is a shameless tax evader then I am not sure what her apology means, and considering she evaded for three years, it's clear that she meant to do what she did. The only reason you feel more offended about misogynistic comments is most likely because you are a woman. While misogyny is horrible, SHG is the one who actually committed a crime that a normal person could be imprisoned for. People are biased as hell.

    ReplyDelete
  124. I'm sorry. I don't know why I laughed at Hentai Seungri. Lmfao.

    ReplyDelete
  125. hhhhh why is this world so unwelcoming to someone 'different' from society

    ReplyDelete
  126. No you got it right :) I was actually repeating myself cause at some point I was doubtful if that really happened like how te tabloid reported since there was no real evidence. But after seeing they joked about that on public TV so I guess it must be true :)

Didn't YG follow them back again? And probably there was a reason he unfollowed in first place. I wouldn't think too much about it tbh :)

    ReplyDelete
  134. I mentioned tax evasion because you're going around accusing eberyone talking about tax evasion that they're a hater. Chill with the delulu tendencies will you? I may not be an angel, but SHG isn't the ethereal human being you're constantly trying to paint her as.

Don't get me wrong, she's hot. I'm just not delusional enough to think she's innocent.

  139. It is possible and they really do. This is completely off-topic but there's one Instagram account that posts pictures that GD likes on Instagram. The dedication is quite funny. Lol.

    ReplyDelete
  140. Lmao... You are the one way out of context. The comments above have almost nothing to do with misogyny. They hate her bc she did not pay her taxes and she acts like she is above bed scene in Korea only to do them in China. This has nothing to do with a general hate of women, its entirely just hate on HER personally.... Thus you pre-complaining about people discussing misogyny is.... really random. Makes me think u really do not understand what it is and why ppl are concerned about it yet u still mock it. :)

    ReplyDelete
  141. you keep repeating people are biased and ask everybody to admit it.lol.
but honestly ,at least for me, it is not about being biased . i think by paying back the taxes plus the fine , the social damage of her mistake is not that big but in Jang Dong Min case , his statemented represent a huge problem that korean society (and also so many other societies) are suffering from. so i agree with "me exo" commenter that his case is more complicated even if they are both aren't sincere about their apologize.

    ReplyDelete
  142. Nah, her Korean movies flopped so hard, though. I don't think she made that big in China, either. Her latest John Woo movie fails to live up to expectation.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Sometimes I wonder why I want to have a super smart son if he will suffer alot.

    ReplyDelete
  144. People on here are so quick to defend every scandal a female celeb has, but.don't you dare defend a male celeb for breathing wrong one time because that makes you delusional.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Lol they are biased tho, and his case is not that complicated. I'm not sure why people act like it is. Let me simplify for you

    1. He is an asshole
    2. Made misogynistic jokes and comments
    3. Made apology because it was brought up again

I really don't see what is so complicated. He is every textbook misogynist ever

    ReplyDelete
  146. Mte, people here are even pressed than Knetz this time. Anyway, I thought it is just time when SHK realized she needs to work harder or "sacrifice" a little bit for acting, not because it is a Chinese movie. Korean actors, and especially actresses can be very conservative when it comes to protect their images. Like Jeon Ji Hyun, had her first kiss scene after 14 years of acting

    ReplyDelete
  147. Lol honey I was talking about your defensive comment towards OP who was pointing out that SJW fangirls see misogyny is everything. Read carefully

    ReplyDelete
  148. Well yeah, of course she only paid it because she got caught like anyone else would rich or poor. I'm not her fan so i'm not really biased towards her. It's just my personal opinion that if you paid the consequences to something there's no need to bring it up all the time. Although the accountant thing is likely to be bullshit I wouldn't deny the complete possibility of it either because they're human and they can make mistakes by doing their job badly of not. It's also likely that she won't get away with further evasion of taxes since she's probably flagged by w/e the Korean equivalent of the IRS is. I just think it's bs that people typically hold wealthier people on a higher standard when the normal folks are evading taxes and getting tax cuts the shouldn't have as well. Although it's inevitable that they do but I still wanted to express that opinion.

As for the entitled thing. My mindset is probably still focused on all the hate comments of knetz on the chinese I have been reading a lot of recently. Due to that influence, I just read it as they were pissed off that she's showing her body to china when she's never shown it to korea. If they just wanted to see her bed scene, there's nothing stopping them from watching the chinese movie with or without subs. Just stating how I viewed it so I can see how many people agreed with what I thought like anyone else does by bothering to comment in articles.

    ReplyDelete
  149. Truth. Also what I've noticed is that NB users are almost always more pressed than knetz. If it's not the article in question they are pressed about, they are pressed about Knet responses. People here just love to be butthurt is how I see it

    ReplyDelete
  150. she is going to be just fine. she is a real actress( like so many other commenters said) who is willing to take risks as long as it means progressing as an actress.

she apologized and paid the fine. korean viewers will surly give her another chance.

    ReplyDelete
  151. But CL is quite popular in Korea now also.

    ReplyDelete

  155. OFF TOPIC

NB: u are going to get shit load of views time to start translating on tao leaving exo. SM responded with a 'we are not sure' statement which i think SM said for luhan too and he left.

    ReplyDelete
  156. Right...okay. So because of a few racist comments pressed preteen Exo fangirls made about Luhan and Kris, save for all the positive comments out there that are still supporting them but don't get translated because NB concentrates on the negative, you're now perceiving every comment that mentions the chinese as racist. Okay. I hope you understand why that's a bad thing to do.

Also about tax evasion, I honestly think anyone who does it, rich or poor, are very deserving of criticism even if they eventually pay it. Just my personal opinion though.

    ReplyDelete
  157. Just stop with the hateful comments. She came back slowly to promoting AND she enjoys some time with her boyfriend. I'm pretty sure she's happy right now.

Anyway, I think that would be the stupidest business decision if he were to break up BB and 2NE1 by removing a member from each group...

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete

And let's see how sulli will be doing in their next comeback, if she still slacking off, then she has a responsibilty issue for sure, just like what people accused her.

    ReplyDelete
  162. It does really throw your reputation of when it's about tax evasion. Just imagine people working their asses off just to put food on the table and people like her comfortably live their life at the upper class. I kinda understand where the hate comes from.

    ReplyDelete
  166. nah , she isn't a perfect person, she made a mistake and already paid, even appologized in front of public..

so what else do you want?
even in the article which is mostly talk about her movie, you are telling around about tax matter... thats why it looks like you hate her.

    ReplyDelete

  169. They can't be around same aged kids either academically.

    ReplyDelete
  170. Both are talent. I agree with your statement about Hyunseung, but to say Seungri isn't talented is a mistake. Seungri has great variety skill and is a mood maker in Big Bang. [He is also very funny, very outspoken, appears to be MCs (esp. in Japan), and has some business under is belt. ]Without him, I think Big Bang would be a bit boring.

    ReplyDelete
  171. Tbh coming to this site and reading the comments nowadays is not as much fun as before. People condemning each other, forever thinking they are right, couldnt take any opinion, and fanwars are starting to become a pain in the eyes. Its starting to become allkpop 2.0. Im not trying to act almighty or butthurt (is that still a word?) but it is starting to be annoying as hell. . .

  179. I think its because they are still kids at heart but expected to fully mature as an adult along with their advanced mind. People couldnt handle them as whether to treat them as an adult or as a kid causing them to be isolated. It is a sad thing :(

  180. Not really looking forward to it. Her vocal isn't very strong tbh and she did get popular for her body. I would like a SECRET comeback.

  186. I agreed. No matter how genius he is that he enrolled college at 8, his mentality and experience will not be up to par with his classmates. I dont think what JDM said was a mistake or joke since he is a repeated offender. What Hyosung said wasnt intentional and it was just one wrong choice of words instead of an strong opinion, it wasnt comparable to those problematic stuffs JDM said.
My logic isnt just about whether they apologized or not, but also the context and intention behind their saying.

  188. from allkpop
