The Korean Red Fox was thought to be extinct under Japanese Imperial rule and excessive poaching. They were known to be smart little creatures that were exceptional all around, and the last they were seen was once in the '70s and one dead body discovered in 2004 in Kangwondo, Yanggu.

Upon discovering the dead body, scientists tried very hard to bring the breed back through artificial insemination and adding in/developing with other breeds like the Russian Fox, but all efforts ended in upsetting failures...

However!

Someone reported that they had spotted a red fox at a dog meat farm in Namyangjoo. Upon investigation, it was indeed a red fox. Not only that, but the dog meat farm was also discovered to be the first nonofficial success story of naturally breeding the red fox. The farm's red fox gave birth to five babies, four of which survived.

As it turned out, the red foxes had migrated to Russia and China when poaching got severe, and the dog meat farm owner had smuggled some back in to Korea to raise on his own.

Despite his important scientific contribution, the owner was still an illegal poacher himself and it is against the law for people to privately own wild animals at risk of extinction.

Although he was at risk of jail, being the only person in Korea to know how to properly and naturally breed the red foxes granted him a way out as long as he shared this information. The owner eventually donated the foxes, along with his coveted knowledge, to environmental organizations.
