Shin Dong Yub reveals a female celebrity unknowingly married a gay man

Article: Shin Dong Yub "Hong Suk Chun and I know a female celebrity who got married to a gay man (woman doesn't know he's gay)"

Source: Newsen via Nate

1. [+605, -20] If he never told her before the marriage, he should 100% never tell her after the marriage.

2. [+361, -132] Shouldn't they let her know... I know it's overstepping boundaries but that woman will be so thankful. She would never suspect anything because her husband never hangs with other women or anything but to find that his interest is in men... what utter betrayal. That's betraying his marriage.

3. [+244, -32] I have a hyung who's gay and his wife always calls me asking if he's cheating on her or if I know anything... I felt so bad for her until she lied to him one day saying she's going to visit family only to come back home to find him having sex with another gay in their home. She fainted that day saying she'd rather he have an affair with another woman...

4. [+27, -14] Shin Dong Yub is such a thoughtless person. Look at what he's done, all these netizens are naming random people trying to find out who it is. What is he going to do to compensate for the celebrities who are harmed by this?

5. [+27, -1] I'm sure the man was ready to be faithful to his family and suppress his sexuality when he made a decision such as that.

6. [+20, -7] I disagree with the second best reply... If he's already started a family and has a child... just keep it buried. It's a truth that is useless to unveil.

7. [+17, -0] If he's gay, he shouldn't have gotten married. He's ruining someone's life just to avoid the nagging of his parents. I have no problem with gays living with their own partners but frauding someone and marrying them is so wrong and an act of betrayal.

8. [+17, -0] What he's saying is a bit dangerous... could destroy a family.

9. [+16, -0] Shin Dong Yub had no business talking about this on broadcast.

10. [+11, -5] Shin Dong Yub messed up on this one... Imagine how fast his heart dropped when he heard his own story on TV.

This to be fucking honest. Its not his problem why mention.

  5. He shouldn't have said that, this will lead to many rumors ..

  6. I like this show. But I don't like how Shin Dong Yub always mocks Hong Suk Chun for being a fake gay.

Like the whole "F**k you" at the end... odg, it was just so random and out of place. I hope they aren't trying to make her go international with some crap like this thinking foreigners love swear words or something.

I watched it twice and I was like d0 NOt wANT

  12. Wow worrying married celebrity women all around in Korea. What's the point of saying things like this I don't even know.

I mostly agree but I guess the pressure of his parents and not to mention closed minded views in certain societies would make it hard to live his life the way he wanted to.

i agree with this 100% but some gay people (especially if they grew up in a homophobic environment) think that they can suppress their desires or that it will go away in time. Obviously that's not the case. I'm sure the guy genuinely cares about his wife and loves her, but more like a friend or sister than a lover.

    ReplyDelete
  19. It must e hard to be gay in Korea, you either have to marry someone you don't feel attracted to, come out of the closet and have sit thrown at you (literally) or live alone forever

    ReplyDelete
  20. The second comment.... She'd be thankful?
This person has obviously never been in a situation like that.

    ReplyDelete
  21. lol now all married men who hang out with Shin Dong Yub and Hong Suk Chun will be suspected by their wives.

    ReplyDelete
  22. [+20, -7] I disagree with the second best reply... If he's already started a family and has a child... just keep it buried. It's a truth that is useless to unveil.

The truth is useless to reveal? omg. Being in a marriage built on lies is not a good thing. It's better to reveal the truth then live your whole marriage life secretly lying behind your wife's back.

    ReplyDelete
  23. okay the second comment is giving me nightmares.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Married men being on the "down-low" is nothing new.

Im in the same position, not with my sexuality but with my education choices lol

Yeah because Korea would accept him no matter his sexuality right???? lol
I feel so bad for those gay idols out there that have to live a fake their lives just because they're afraid of the public opinion.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Getting married when you dont feel attracted to your partner is in my opinion not fair to the partner. But it is understandable when looking at the views the majority of people have on gay people in korea.

    ReplyDelete
  28. could i make another request?? are there any articles on EXO's Showtime reaching 1.9% in viewer ratings?

    ReplyDelete
  35. How does one bring this up in a conversation?

    ReplyDelete
  36. *Sigh* Even though you said yours is more so reference to your educational choices...idk why society has to judge everything. If people were so less concerned with what someone else is doing in their lives (unless it's detrimental to society i.e. trynna physically/emotionally harm someone or people with ill intent)/how they're living their lives and focus more so on their own lives not to mention always judging someone the world would be not only a "better" but "easier" world to live in. Just my two cents ;/ *Shrugs*

    ReplyDelete
  42. This happens a lot though its selfish of the man to lie and use a women as his beard i can understand why they do it but its still wrong

    ReplyDelete
  43. nope. that rating is really good tbh.
i heard that cabel tv shows barely reach 1%.

I agree. I mean it's not fair to get married to someone who you clearly have no attraction for. And at the same time it sounds like this guy is just pleasing his parents and supressing his feelings. At the same time I understand that maybe the guy just does not have the courage to come out

    ReplyDelete
  45. It's kind of a show like Dr.Phil.
Viewers provide their stories, and hosts give them advices.
They were talking about similar cases like above so Shin Dong Yub mentioned his experience.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sadly that is still the case in many places for people, not just Korea. So while I cant say I support the choice...I understand totally where it comes from. I cant imagine not being supported by your own family and forced onto this path.

    ReplyDelete
  47. you totally shouldn't feel bad for those gay idols, their fans would still support them no matter what. ex: jo kwon, probably kwanghee too.

    ReplyDelete
  48. There was an idol group in the past and one of the members actually came out, it's sad he later committed suicide for all the hate mail/messages he got. There was also a transgender comedian.....

    ReplyDelete
  49. Coming out is hard enough. But coming out to a society that sees you as unequal is to me probably unbearable. Im sure getting married to someone he knew he could never love must be terrible, it really just is a unfortunate situation.

    ReplyDelete
  50. undercover brothers are the worse.

    ReplyDelete
  51. "I have no problem with gays people living with their own partners but frauding someone and marrying them is so wrong and an act of betrayal."
True story, but you can blame the rest of Korean society for not allowing gays to be together legally or comfortably. Societal pressure leads some gay men to marry women just to make their parents or society happy.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Why would you say this on a public broadcast? The wife does have the right to know if she does not already, but honestly who is this man to put their private business out there like this? If/when the woman found out it'd be hard enough for her and now you're just going to destroy this family. This is a private matter that should have been handled within the family, this man bringing it out on television is truly low.

    wow
    such rating
    very cable
    much good

as most of the other replies suggest, 1.9% is very good for cable! reply was considered a success cause it broke through the 1% barrier

    ReplyDelete
  56. Nah they don't literally throw shits on gays. But a bunch of Christians will keep bothering you to repent and try to cure you. Younger generations have nothing against gays these days.

    ReplyDelete
  57. I dont think jo kwon has ever said he is gay. But i am sure there are gay idols but they will most probably never come out while they are still active.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love you shin dongyub but this is just not right. Even if he's got consent from the married couple.

    ReplyDelete
  59. "She fainted that day saying she'd rather he have an affair with another woman..."

    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  60. I know it's really hard. But the man can't keep his secret forever. When the woman know about this. I can't imagine how hurt she is.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Probably their international fans and not even the most part of the international fandom are open minded. They're like "my oppa isnt gay stop insulting him!!111!".

    ReplyDelete
  62. Because it is an advice program and one of the requests was similar to what he said.

    ReplyDelete
  63. maybe he want to try to be normal?

That is so terrible- not only the fact that her husband lied about his sexuality, but the fact that he cheated on her and for her too catch him like that....

    ReplyDelete
  65. Because it's a show where hosts give viewers advices and one of the requests was similar to what he said.

  66. Not like all straight men in Korea does any better. There are a lot of men who toughless cheat on their wives, no matter their sexuallity.
There are also a lot of marriages for money, beauty, smartness (like... SKY University students marrying beauty women/rich men) and status, but Korea normally see it as a good thing, since is the "level" thing.
Whoever cheat or just marry for something they have, not for love, is ruining their partner's life... At last gays have the korean society to blame for not marrying who they really want.

    ReplyDelete
  67. 7. [+17, -0] If he's gay, he shouldn't have gotten married. He's ruining someone's life just to avoid the nagging of his parents. I have no problem with gays living with their own partners but frauding someone and marrying them is so wrong and an act of betrayal.

Best response for me, I hate gay men/women who do that think about the person who fell in love with you who is now hurting for your selfishness

  69. Sometimes you don't need to be Sherlock Holmes to realize someone's sexuality.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I wouldn't be surprised if he did keep his secret forever unless korean society becomes accepting of gay marriage and gay people, he most probably will stay married to this woman.

    ReplyDelete
  71. 5. [+27, -1] I'm sure the man was ready to be faithful to his family and suppress his sexuality when he made a decision such as that.

    eh...what??

    ReplyDelete
  72. If their parents want them to have children, why don't they consider other options like adoption or surogacy. Men don't want to be forced into situations they are uncomfortable with. It's like the famiy line and reputation are at risk

    ReplyDelete
  73. it peaked at 1.9%. averaging at 1.7%, but that is still very, very good!

    ReplyDelete
  74. Honestly if i were to find out that i somehow marry a guy that was hidden in a closet, he would have to run away across the country before i got my hands on him.
Because it is not just about him anymore. Its the woman he married and kids he might have had.

    ReplyDelete
  75. my friend went through the same in my country huhu for all i know he's been 10+ years supressing his sexuality for the sake of his family.. he likes girls, like my girl friends like snsd/taylor swift so its not that obvious. he says he's been trying to like girls in sexual ways :[

    ReplyDelete
  76. That makes no difference to me. Keep your mouth shut and pretend you have nothing to say. Unless it's your own personal experience, or at the least it was an issue already resolved long in the past, it ain't his place to mention it.

    ReplyDelete
  77. Reply got over ten percent. 3 percent in cable ratings is equivalent to about 15 percent on public networks.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I wouldn't blame you for being angry and/or upset at the situation/the guy. When weighing situations such as these you really have to be considerate and extremely thoughtful of EVERYONE in the situation and not just yourself.

  82. What's the big deal? He didn't mention the name of the celebrity or any hints regarding that. Psychologists share their patients' stories all the time.

    ReplyDelete
  83. but he didn't need to say that the other person was a celebrity......that just incites rumors and suspicions

    ReplyDelete
  84. How the hell have you amassed so many upvotes? You've even got more than NB :O

    ReplyDelete
  85. 1. [+605, -20] If he never told her before the marriage, he should 100% never tell her after the marriage.

Disagreed. Truth will always be unveiled and it's better for the wife to know even though it's late. Imagine being married for the rest of your life and on your death bed your husband suddenly drops the bomb. There will be things you couldve enjoyed better rather than living your life in unexpected lies. Lies which comforted you thru your life will be the one who will antagonize you

    ReplyDelete
  86. This is an issue they shouldn't be bringing up on television, like really? How humiliating would it be for both the man and the woman who are primarily involved to learn that their marriage issues are discussed on television by a third party? Shin Dong Yub should've known better than that.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Jenizz | pinkcrownJanuary 24, 2014 at 9:41 PM

... can knets... like decide? Man... you're really fcked when you're gay in Korea.. :/

    ReplyDelete
  88. I agree, even i am wondering who the female celebrity is knetz must be going crazy.

    ReplyDelete
  89. i think he can share it but i think he should've said more like 'it's the story I heard from my friend' or something..

now it feels like everyone who close or know SDY is suspicious

    ReplyDelete
  90. people already know he's gay but he still has a fair amount of fans in korea (don't tell me they're all gays) we should feel bad for those who are not famous tbh.

    ReplyDelete
  91. You don't need to mention a name to get people gossiping and wondering. And how trashy is it to be willing to blab the story to thousands of strangers, but not spare one thought on the clueless wife? How about the husband who no doubt already feels guilt seeing his dirty laundry aired indirectly on TV by people I assume he thinks are friends? Some matters should remain private and personal, not used for entertainment.

And personally if I heard my therapist on tv talking about me, name or no, id be hella pissed.

    ReplyDelete
  92. nah I bet they already know he's gay.

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  94. It's fair when the partner knows going into the marriage. There are people who like the idea of being in an open relationship. Some women even prefer the idea of being the second or third wife in polygamous societies, feeling they'd get more free time and autonomy. And some people just have low sex drives and don't really care. There are all kinds of people in this world.

    ReplyDelete
  95. http://news.mt.co.kr/mtview.php?no=2013090810460552433&type=&MTS

The guy who threw shit was a mentally deranged person who was expelled from a church months ago.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Obviously all idols aren't gay but there must be some and someone wouldn't have to be insanely brave to say they were gay. Also people all just assume he is gay until he comes out and says it i dont think anyone should be labelling him.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Well imo I think it's selfish for a gay person to marry a straight person without telling them. I understand it's difficult in some societies but you are pretty much lying to a person who obviously loves you. If you cared even a little bit about the person you married then you would come clean.

    ReplyDelete
  98. who knows, maybe it wasn't even a true story and was just for the sake of the show...but i do agree that it's kinda unfair to marry someone just to please others but it's complicated because of the society :/

    ReplyDelete
  99. There are definitely situations like that but from the this particular situation it seems that the female celebrity does not know.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Umm, I think it's obvious he doesn't have consent when he revealed that the female celebrity DOESN'T know that her husband is gay.

    ReplyDelete
  101. He never said the person was close to him. And being a national MC for almost 20 years, he knows thousands of Korean celebrities. That's why Knetz didn't come up with an actual name.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I know but I still have to say that gay idols are still living well and even treated well compared to normal people.

    ReplyDelete
  103. Really? There are literally thousands of celebrities in Korea. How can one even come up with a rumor when all he knows is that the person is a celebrity?

    ReplyDelete
  104. "7. [+17, -0] If he's gay, he shouldn't have gotten married. He's ruining someone's life just to avoid the nagging of his parents. I have no problem with gays living with their own partners but frauding someone and marrying them is so wrong and an act of betrayal."

I agree. I know it's hard being gay in Korea, but don't play with someone else's heart. They've fallen deep in love with you only to realize that you will never be able to return those feelings... and then if you have children... it's really a mess.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Agreed! If someone has gone as far to marry and hide their sexuality, that shows how much they've been cornered and trapped by a ridiculous doctrine. It's unfair on the partner that thinks her husband is straight but people have to realise that it's the consequence of ostracising people who are different.

I read the other day that gay sex is a 'crime' in India now... I just can't deal with how many steps back society is taking around the world. The whole Russia thing too. History doesn't seem to be teaching us anything, discrimination continues to exist.

    ReplyDelete
  106. Nobody is labelling anybody but some idols even give us hints because they're not able to say loudly "I AM GAY". If you're expecting them to say those three words then you can sit and wait because that won't happen just because that would mean the end of their carreers and everything they have worked so hard.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I watched the show.He didn't say the person was his friend. He went sorta like "Yeah.. I get what you're saying, because I had similar experience. I've seen some female celebrity marrying a gay guy, too. Only a handful of people including myself knew the husband was gay, but we didn't have guts to tell the wife about that. I couldn't decide if it was right or wrong to have her hear that big secret from me not from her husband..." Does this sound like he was crossing the line? I think not. Knetz, as always, are overreacting not knowing the contents.

    ReplyDelete
  108. But you were talking in general, so you go an in general reply. And now you are butthurt? I don't get it.

    ReplyDelete
  109. If a gay idol came out they would be treated much worse then a orinarily open korean gay man. I think i saw a comment on another article about gay people on the tv corrupting Children. No way would a person in the public eye be treated better in korea. Fans may be understanding but it would never be to the point where they would be supporting him, as an active idol after he is openly gay.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I don't know, dude /:
It's mainly the Int. fans (mostly western) who would be accepting. Like a while ago, Heechul posted a photo with Hong Suk Chun and all his little whiny ass fangirls were like, "Oppa don't hang out with this gay", and a bunch of other negative homophobic things. Only a few (including me) was defending him :/

I think coming out as gay is even worse for idols cuz they already have an image to uphold.

    ReplyDelete
  111. I was talking about korean society's view on gay people in general but i was talking about this couple specifically.

    ReplyDelete

And said, no broad comments, it has to "this couple" only! It was a really weird, and defensive response. Like, can you not handle normal discussion at all? wtf?

    ReplyDelete
  117. We will just have to agree to disagree because I still think it was wrong of him to mention it.

    ReplyDelete
  118. "if you dont have interesting stories about yourself, tell interesting stories about others" is what i see him and a lot of other celebs do

    ReplyDelete
  119. After the hilarious teasers I've been looking forward to this one.

    ReplyDelete
  120. well he has to be close enough with that celebrity or the guy she married to know such story, so people start to become suspicious of who it is

    ReplyDelete
  121. He's been spotted at multiple gay bars? And I hate to say it, but he is awfully flamboyant. Did you see his solo? I've heard people say that he has a tattoo that suggests he's gay, too. I haven't seen it bc I don't pay attention to him, but yeah.

It's not unfair to "label" him as something that he actually doesn't seem to be trying too hard to hide.

  123. I assumed the first comment was directly referring to the the couple mentioned in the article and therefore my comment was a continuation with focus on the couple in question.

  134. Acting flamboyant shouldn't be an indication that someone is gay and neither should solo performances. I have seen loads of performances were the male idols dress up as woman. I'm a straight guy and I've been to a gay bar and it isn't a big deal. He has said he is straight before so what i meant was that until he says anything people really shouldn't make assumptions based on his behaviour. Hate to quoate a allkpop article but all i got, http://www.allkpop.com/article/2010/02/2ams-jo-kwon-speaks-about-homosexuality-rumors#axzz2rNPbNa4p.

  135. Neither you, or the comment you are replying to ever mentioned "this couple". Both were addressed broadly to the population as a whole. Unsurprisingly, the 3rd comment in this chain, likewise addressed the topic broadly in the same exact way. And then for some weird reason, you freaked out. Maybe no one has ever replied to you before and you didn't know how to react? Maybe you are really young? But you panicked at really normal response. idgi

  136. why destroy ones life to seal another? unless both parties are aware and talked about the situation don't harm the other (that goes both ways). relationships are based on honesty, love and affection..

  137. Like Bloom was sexy but classy, this comeback seems like pure trash tbh. I am not a HUGE fan of hers, but I do like her. I just don't understand how this happened lol. Maybe its because i'm so stuck in the past when Kpop was music actually meant something.

I got away from American music since it was all about girls, money, and sex. Now it kind of seems like Kpop is going down that path. Most concepts are all sexy and I just don't get why. I've been into Korean music for almost 7 years now, and each year it's just getting worse and worse.

  138. He didn't say he was close to either of them. He could known the secret from hearing it from his friend who was close to the guy. If you check out other articles regarding this topic everyone's like "what's the big deal?" and no one's starting a rumor because there's no fucking clues to start a rumor

  140. One doesn't have to say 'this couple', when one is commenting on the direct subject. I could say the same thing and say it isn't a generalised them because the first person in this thread didn't say it must be hard to be gay in korea 'in general'. I would assume that when a article is about an idol being abused by its management, and someone makes a comment like "idols are treated badly in korea" that it is a general comment that is focused on the idol being mistreated directly.

  141. It reminds me of something I saw on tv a few years ago, where wives were interviewed about their ex-husbands who turned out to be gay. They're actually in denial for most of their lives, and divorced when they were at least 40 years old and had kids. Most had mental breakdown and some even committed suicide. Which is just sad, I mean, if society was less judgmental, those men wouldn't need to be in denial in the first place and wouldn't have made their wives suffer (btw, some of those women, were supportive of their husbands, just bc they /really/ loved them, I mean I'm aromantic so I have zero empathy with anything related to romantic love but I find it kind of touching and sad and nice)

    ReplyDelete
  142. Yeah he shouldn't have revealed other people's personal life on TV like that, now all the female celebrities who know him and are married with kids must be suspecting if their husbands are gay.

This is the most closed minded comment that i always see from kpop fans. American music is soo diverse and even if you look at Hot100 most of the songs arent even about that.

    ReplyDelete
  147. Right!
My aunt was married for 10+ years and her husband finally realized he is gay. His family sent him to hell. Literally. He is now happy together with a man. I don't think its fair to blame him. He had to suppress it all his teen years and found it out late.

...and since you're on nb, you should know how ruthless and investigative knetz can be. finding this person would be an impossible task in Hollywood, but the entertainment world in Korea is much smaller.

I don't know which country you are talking about but this statement is sadly not true in several countries around the world. I hope it will change when I am still on this planet.

  152. No, these things happen...probably rare but it has happened. My female friend has had a bad streak of dating gay men.... And in one of her long relationships, 3 or 4 years, she discovered he was cheating behind her back with other men. It's one thing to have an unrequited relationship, but it's a completely dreadful feeling to find out that the person you've been with for those many years use you as a cover-up to their own sexual orientation.

I agree. A partnership/marriage should be built on trust and honesty how can you keep something like that from your partner.

100% agreed. It's wrong to do that to someone.

  159. Im sorry but i fail to see how gays acceptance is in any way related to modernization of a society. The Ancient Rome and Greeks have it as part of their culture. Not to mention there are some stories in the Bible related to it proving that the idea of gays acceptance has already been in the human history for hundreds of years (regardless of how 'inaccurate' they are).

Discrimination will continues to exist just like the war will never stops, simply because there are no profit in peace.

That's why as crazy as Hong Seokcheon may seem, he's actually a very very brave man and a great example to follow, even if it's impossible to do so.

    ReplyDelete
  162. I don't know why some of you think it was the culture of Korea that's
guiding gay people to do things like this, bearding a marriage, it's the
gay's fault that they can't be true to themselves, and only mind what
other people say that as if that's all that matters.

    ReplyDelete
  163. Is't they was forced by the society..?
Many gays don't dare to come out because many people still don't accept gay, they might be bullied or isolated. In the end negative> postive. Some gays come out in front of their friends but to not their family because they know they can't accept. These people will either married because of parents pressure or want to have babies or unmarried.
When they cheat on guys doesn't mean that they are 100% gay, they might be bisexual too.
Regarding about whether shin dong yup should say it or not I think people are over reacting about it. or you should watch more talking viariety shows instead. Many artists when they have nothing to say they will say about other artists, of course without mentioning the name. If it is so easy to guess than why isn't a name pop up by now? netizens are powerful researchers in this kind of thing but no name are out now, mean that the range are very big and they have no information to search on.

    ReplyDelete
  164. Lol, I mean more so the ones my friends always listen to. I just find that it's so hard to find good music these days no matter what language.

Most mainstream songs have something or the other to do with something sexual tbfh.

  165. I don't know how you came up with #2 and #4. All he said was he's seen a female celebrity marrying a gay guy. He didn't specify if the husband, too, is a celebrity. He didn't say they have a kid now. He gave out nothing. Even notorious Knetz can't possibly figure out who this female is.

    ReplyDelete
  166. I don't think I have mentioned the "modernisation of a scoiety" to be directly related to gays acceptance. So bit confused how to respond. If this is in reference to the history thing I mentioned then let me explain. Homosexuality probably did exist hundreds of years ago, in fact I've read about it being in ancient literature but it's not been discussed as much as now. I don't think it's until recently in which I mean around 50 or 60 years ago when homosexuals actually became more adamant to receive freedom. See racism is not really that inherent in society now but still exists to an extent. At least it's not something you experience from your own family members though. I have a friend who tells me he's bisexual but it's pretty clear he's gay. He's from a strict catholic background and expects himself to marry a girl because that's what his society accepts is normal. I'm not condemning the religion because I've met catholics who aren't as strict but the environment he's in, that seems to be the case.
