Grandmother Hwang Geum Ja, born in 1924, was captured off the streets at 13 years old and forced to work at a glass factory. Three years later, she was forced to work as a comfort woman for Japanese soldiers. After returning to Korea, she lived a solitary life in an apartment sponsored by the government. She collected empty bottles and recylable trash, which amounted to about $100,000 usd, all of which she donated to a scholarship. She left the remaining $30,000 usd or so she saved up to a scholarship organization.
Out of 234 comfort women recorded, her passing leaves 55 still surviving today.
