An 18 year old student commit suicide by jumping off a bridge into a river. Investigations are underway, but no reason is known yet.
1. [+153, -15] It's been such a long time since South Korea was ranked #1 as the country with the highest suicide rates out of the OCED countries and yet we still have not done a thing to prevent suicides. The fact that our teens are increasingly resorting to such drastic and extreme measures like this means that our society is doing something wrong, and we all need to reflect on the quality of our lives. Every city claims they're fortifying their efforts but this needs to be maximized throughout the country and the government needs to take a bigger role in finding a solution to this. Even just around me, I've already heard of several suicides and it's reached a point where suicide is deeply rooted in our way of life. This is such a severe problem right now and no one's doing anything about it.
2. [+147, -13] Without being in the shoes of the student herself, how dare we say anything about her choices. I just sincerely hope that she's happy wherever she is now.
3. [+58, -4] With such a bright future ahead of her, how could she leave it all behind. I pray she rests in peace.
4. [+16, -0] I think adults take the majority of the responsibility with the stress they put on their kids over studying. They're all living vicariously through their kids, trying to fulfill everything they couldn't... There's different stressors at every age level, and adults act like teens shouldn't be stressed because they're not out in the real world making money, which is wrong.
5. [+15, -1] I'm jealous of her bravery. I don't have the bravery to do what she did so I'm barely living my life day to day.
6. [+13, -2] As a teenager myself, I think I can understand why she found life torturous enough to commit suicide. Friend, I hope you're able to live a worry-free and happy life wherever you are now. Rest in peace.
7. [+9, -0] Korea's education system is only a producer of psychologically ill people
8. [+9, -0] Koreans have lost any goal in life. We're all just living as slaves of money.
9. [+7, -2] The reason Korea has the #1 suicide rate in the world is because of our society. Koreans only feel happiness and satisfaction if they are doing comparatively better than somebody else. Everyone lives perfect lives on TV, mom's friend's son has no problem getting into Seoul, Yonsei, Korea University and top name companies, someone's husband brings in double your income, someone's daughter-in-law, someone's wife, someone, someone, someone...
Koreans are constantly comparing and measuring themselves against other people so once they feel that they're falling behind, they no longer feel satisfaction with their own life and choose suicide in the end.
Because you can't find a job, because your grades suck, because you have no money... Those are all excuses that are comparative. Koreans love comparing themselves to others and don't have a clear distinctive goal of their own because they're so busy walking around as the sheep of society. This needs to change.
Schools and the media need to start emphasizing individual happiness and the importance of finding who you are as a person. And please, stop producing Cinderella type dramas. I bet our suicide rates would drop by 50% if we just got rid of those unrealistic plots.
