Article: 'Knee-Drop Guru' what was the point in inviting Kusanagi Tsuyoshi? A special that made your face burn in embarrassment
Source: TV Report via Nate
1. [+1,626, -48] I demand a public apology. What happened in this episode is equivalent to Yoo Jae Suk being mistreated in Japan. Kang Ho Dong failed to live up to his title of national MC, Yoo Se Yoon sat there imitating a monkey, and Kwanghee's overreactions to everything... The entire episode was like a box set of everything you would never want to happen in a respectable talk show. I wouldn't be this embarrassed if he had guested on Healing Camp or People Inside instead. Do they even know who this man is? Do they even know how much respect he gave to the Korean stars who guested on his own programs? The producers of Knee-Drop Guru made it obvious that they had absolutely no clue how important this man is, how much of a top star he is, how hard it is to even dream of having him guest on your show, how much he loves Korea... This will definitely leave an impact on the Korean stars advancing in Japan. For the Japanese to know that their star was treated in such a manner... If I were Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, I'd be gravely disappointed with the state of Korean variety shows.
2. [+1,169, -20] Knee-Drop Guru seriously needs to reflect over this ㅡㅡ
3. [+1,167, -16] I really wondered how they could act like that in front of a guest many could only dream of hosting... Kusanagi Tsuyoshi barely even began speaking before Cha Seung Won was brought in to take over the show. I thought there would be a part two to feature more of Kusanagi but it ended right then and there...
4. [+227, -3] First time in my life I ever felt apologetic to a Japanese...
5. [+174, -1] How could Kang Ho Dong not think of doing any extra research on his guests before bringing them?!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lee Kyung Kyu researched and studied up on homosexual history knowing that he would be hosting Hong Suk Chun as a guest. Viewers were so impressed with the deep, well thought out questions that he had prepared beforehand and the discussions they brought about. This episode of Knee-Drop Guru made it painfully obvious that nobody knew a clue about Japan or their culture. If you're going to invite foreign guests on your show, do so without embarrassing the entire country! All the episode did was compare Korean and Japanese cultures to sound as if Korea was superior. Kang Ho Dong proved to be a loud mouthed MC with not a speck of respect for others. He should've researched beforehand about Japanese culture, who Kusanagi is, what the Japanese entertainment industry is like... They should already know that he's a member of SMAP, why would they force him to introduce himself? This episode was an absolute embarrassment to Korea. Kang Ho Dong and the producers are pathetic.

Source: Mydaily via Naver
1. [+447, -8] Kusanagi is Japan's top celebrity, someone who is actually well versed in Korean history and the country itself... He obviously knows that the Korean refer to the Japanese as monkies as a racial slur, so how in the world did the show think that it was appropriate to imitate a monkey in front of him? That is equivalent to a Japanese calling a Korean a josen jin to his face. For Kusanagi to have just laughed that off, it just proves what an amazing person he is. Kang Ho Dong said that he would be returning to his roots as a rookie... is that so?
2. [+400, -11] This is an absolute embarrassment. Not only am I embarrassed over the episode, but I also heard that stupid journalists called out racial slurs at the airport when he was leaving........ I'm so embarrassed... This was his first visit to Korea in a while... I really just want foreigners to come to Korea and only leave with the best memories... No words can express my disappointment.
3. [+290, -5] The episode made him out to be some Japanese comedian and turned him into a joke with the constant references to the battle of Korean vs Japanese gags. I'm not his fan but I'm studying abroad in Japan at the moment and I feel this is where Korea falls short in comparison to Japan. To have one of Japan's top group members as a guest on your show requires a certain level of respect... But what was this? I really hope they reflect over this...

Article: 'Knee-Drop Guru' was the monkey imitation absolutely necessary?
Source: Star News via Nate
1. [+466, -5] To think of all that Kusanagi has done to help improve Korea's image in Japan makes me sick how the show thought they could invite such an important person and treat him in such a manner. Kang Ho Dong and Yoo Se Yoon kept pushing the Korean Japanese sentiments while Cha Seung Won was not even needed on the show. So uncomfortable to watch, so apologetic.
2. [+417, -6] I always knew the three MCs were dumb as rocks but what are the excuses for the PDs and writers? They thought they could air this without trouble? Looks like the producers are as stupid as the MCs.
3. [+318, -17] I was so embarrassed... Yoo Se Yoon, fuc*er...
4. [+57, -0] SMAP member Tsuyoshi is basically on the level of Jang Dong Gun and Jung Woo Sung ㅡㅡ I'm pretty sure he didn't come all the way to Korea to hear Kang Ho Dong scream like a pig and Yoo Se Yoon say stupid sh*t. I was so pissed off watching this episode, I couldn't even contain my anger. Do they not know what this man has done for Korea? ㅡㅡ
5. [+56, -0] They really don't know all that he's done for Korea. Even when Japanese celebrities would tease him for his love for Korea, he'd stand his ground and explain what he loves about the country. How could a Korean show treat such a man with such absolute disrespect?
-
Article: 'Knee-Drop Guru' Viewers never even got to hear his reasons for his love for Korea
Source: Newsen via Nate
1. [+135, -2] This episode will obviously arouse more anti-Japanese/anti-Korean sentiment. What pisses me off more is that we have nothing to say that. What an episode that raises our national status...
2. [+133, -1] My face was burning red watching Kwanghee fu*k around and Yoo Se Yoon imitate monkies ㅡㅡ
3. [+132, -1] Looks like I wasn't the only one.. I turned it off because I couldn't stand watching until the end. None of them were prepared for a real discussion. It was basically a Cha Seung Won show with Kusanagi as the special guest.

Damn.. poor guy..
ReplyDeleteI thouhthought nb doesnot talk about japan vs korea issues...
ReplyDeletethey imitated monkeys? gj pds and producers for leaving that in
ReplyDeleteProps to Kusanagi for keeping his composure and taking it in stride. The MC-ing of this episode must've been really bad if the k-netizens are unanimous in their reaction.
ReplyDeleteThis is what happens when you got noisy ultra-nationalist attention whores in both countries that influence society and it doesn't help that the media caters to their bigotry as well.
ReplyDeletethey should be this upset about their blackface comedies
ReplyDeletedoesn't seem like any of them know how to interact with foreigners.. didn't they kinda drop the ball with the Wachowskis episode too?
ReplyDeleteI imagine he's as busy as Yoo Jae Suk too. Seriously, when you have a guest from a foreign country, especially one that you have tensions with, and there is a respected celebrity that LIKES your country to come on your talk shows...
ReplyDeletereally?
How is this Japan vs Korea issues? Either you didn't read the netizens comment or you are just trying to see too much into it?
ReplyDeleteThe show sucks, especially with the addition of that PS addict Kwanghee the fag
ReplyDeleteConsidering he even apologized about Japan's evil past (i.e the whole comfort women issue - something a lot of Japan's mentally fuckwitted nationalists still deny today), it's really quite sickly how he was treated, yea.
ReplyDeleteI think the media is to especially blame for such attitudes amongst both nations.
I feel bad for him
ReplyDeletehe really likes Korea alot..I remember when he interviewed TVXQ in his show when Hallyu wave still was not big, they tried them so well,he always showed his love for Korea.
while Kang Ho Dong and his crew were disrespectful to him
The korean netizens are talking about the issue. All NetizenBuzz is doing is TRANSLATING what they're saying. Those comments are from the typing of koreans who actually live there.
ReplyDeleteman khd is having a rough return
ReplyDeletebut you also cant say it isnt partially his fault
Kang Ho dong is just really loud mouthed. I don't see any merits in him either.
ReplyDeleteThe only reason why k netizens are so supportive of kusanagi is because he is pro-korea. Korea and their nationalistic ideals again. I guess it's probably because the whole nation was brought up that way...
But it's good to see k netizens not being critical again. I agree with them this time.
I cant blame Nakai or Takuya will feel offended if they watch this.. How this show treated their member like this.. It just uncomfortable, though Tsuyopon just laugh it off.. When SMAP and Tsuyoshi really treat every single korean star in so much class and respect in their show..
ReplyDeleteI appreciate how much Korean netizens respect him. Considering the extremely complicated history between the 2 nations, it could be so easy for them to automatically write him off despite all the positive things he has said about Korea in the past.
ReplyDeleteI feel so bad for him and I hope this doesn't negatively affect any future decisions he makes over guesting on Korean programs.
Outspoken public figures like him are so important in helping to attempt to create healthier relations between Korean and Japanese people so I'm so disappointed that he was treated so poorly...
Wow this sounds horrible. I hope the show isn't as bad as shown by netizens' comments D:
ReplyDeleteKusunagi Tsuyoshi speaks fluent Korean too, isn't he? It must be horrible guesting on a show like that. It's not like he's clueless about what's going on when the MCs made fun of him as well :/
Finally people are opening their eyes on KHD.
ReplyDeleteKHD is that guy who launch stupid jokes, with a very loud voice and embarrass everybody during family reunions~
I think the reason why nb covering this is because this is the anomaly of the usual reaction to Jp-kr issue.. Because it is different from usual sentiment. This time they side with kusanagi and even feel embarassed of their own show. If it is the usual sentiment, whatever it is they will just bashing him coz he is Jpnese.
ReplyDeleteGlad in this case they side with him, despite complicated relationship of Kr-Jp.
I can't fully comprehend the issue because it's not something I've lived, but their whole attitudes towards these foreign guests are so wrong. They don't research them at all. They act foolish and make everything a joke. They should stop doing them if they aren't going to bother to put in some effort to interview their guests. KHD should be embarrassed.
ReplyDeletekusanagi tsuyoshi should go to happy together where awesome yoo jae suk is the mc and he can show off his cooking skill there since there is segment where guest show their simple cheap late night dish/snack
ReplyDeleteRESPECT!!!!!!! If they can't treat their foreign guests right (also with the Wachowshi siblings), then don't invite one. I'm specially pissed with how they treated Kusanagi Tsuyoshi, really doing the monkey imitation, just WOW!!!!!! It's basic courtesy to show respect for HUMANs in general, especially for a person/guests who has shown nothing but love and respect for your country. Putting aside the fact that he is really a big deal in Japan, and that he has CONSISTENTLY treated Korea, it's culture and people with so much respect despite the the 2 countries animosity, the angrier I get. Hallyu, Give and take!!!!
ReplyDeleteI feel really angry... how dare they treat Kusanagi like that! He's really stuck his neck out in the past promoting Korea and apologizing for past crimes and this show was so disrespectful. I actually used to like Kang Ho Dong and was happy he was making a comeback but he's such an incompetent host, not even researching who his guests are... I wish Kusanagi had gone on a Yoo Jae Suk hosted program. ;;
ReplyDeleteKnetizens, i agree with you 100%.
ReplyDeleteThe monkey gag was horrible. It was really hard to watch that part. The producers should apologize for that.
ReplyDeleteBesides that, however, the episode overall wasn't as bad as the netizens are making it. The reason why they brought Cha Seung Won out was because the two celebrities are good friends. Cha Seung Won acted as the mediator between Kusanagi and the MCs since Kusanagi is not (of course understandably) fluent in Korean. It's always awkward to watch something when MCs ask questions in one language and the guest answers in another.
Cha Seung Won complimented Kusanagi endlessly on his work ethic and passion. Since they worked on the same play, they shared stories about each other. Cha Seung Won's presence made the episode a lot more fun to watch and helped get rid of the awkwardness. I feel like some netizens are just jumping on the bandwagon to write crap towards Ho Dong, Kwang Hee, and Lee Se Yoon without even watching the full episode. Either way, I really commend Kusanagi for answering all the questions honestly and keeping his composure even with the monkey gag.
i really wanna know what the japanese netizens feel about this.
ReplyDeleteA public apology with lots of tears in 3, 2...
ReplyDeleteSeems Kan Ho Dong is done. First he is getting panned for Moon Light Prince and now even on Knee Drop Guru. People no longer want the brash and loud MC and want a more refined host.
ReplyDelete"this show and its cast doesn't seem to know how to interact with foreigners."
ReplyDelete^THIS.
monkey imitation... hmm.. i knw thats their trademark show.
ReplyDeletebut then.. dont they learn enough from KSY??
are you the creator of antikpopfangirl
ReplyDeleteOne side of me wants to say that seeing these crazy 'comedic' gags are things Kusanagi is very much used to seeing in Japan's eccentric and off-the-wall comedy/variety show culture, and another side of me wants to hit all the hosts over the head with a frying pan... lol
ReplyDeleteis it called variety show, right? why so many complain? I guess because he is a foreigner who loves South Korea.
ReplyDeleteNever understood kang ho dong's national mc title... All he does is shout and over react..
ReplyDeletegiving a big round of applause for your dumbness and disrespect, hodong and the rest of knee drop guru. may it be back to you
ReplyDeletei dont know why korean love kang hong dong so much, he so noisy plus the way he handle program doesnt seem worth to be admire at. i guess korean really have bad taste on every thing, look at their top song on chart.. songs with meaningless lyrics. i cant stop compare with japan top chart song and their respectable celebrity which im also love the the first i saw. in japan celebrity personal live more acceptable in general compare to korean which im become pitiful just see it.
ReplyDeletei really never found him funny... i agree.. he was just always loud. :/
ReplyDeleteit's nice to see koreans defending a japanese.
ReplyDeletesorry to say, can't stop comparing how SmapSmap show being conducted when lady gaga guest on the show. gaga and mc get along well like there are no language barrier..
ReplyDeleteThese MCs are really limited about international guests, they are really ignorant in a high level.
ReplyDeleteThey don't know how to communicate, they don't give a damn about other countries cultures, they don't even try to learn something about other cultures or the guests, they just keep trying to make a joke out of every damn thing. It's really frustrating to watch that. It's not funny, man!
Just because the MCs keep laughing like crazy high dudes it doesn't mean it's funny. You will only laugh with them if you don't have brains at all. They just look stupid. And if the guest is polite, he/she will just try to go with the flow, but one of these days I hope they invite someone that's not as polite as this guy or those Matrix brothers. Let's see then.
If I was a Korean I would be really embarassed right now.
I never really got why Kang Ho Dong won those awards as the best MC, honestly, he just keep pretending the things are funny when they aren't, he keeps laughing like craaaaazy when the things are not freaking funny.
These international guests interviews just showed how weak he is as an MC, it will be better if he just interviews Korean celebrities that he knows from now on.
I know there are shows that handle language barriers differently but it's only been recently that this show has started to incorporate foreign guests. I'm guessing that they're still figuring out what the best way is to handle language barriers...but yes. They should definitely be more professional about it.
ReplyDeleteIn fact, this type of show is better off without foreign guests. This show's style is very aggressive towards its guests; even when Jung Woo Sung, who is a huge star in Korea, starred on the show the MCs poked jokes at how old he was getting and how Kim Soo Hyun is the most popular actor nowadays. You really have to roll with the punches if you want to guest on this show as well as understand Korean humor. The point of the show is to bring stars, even those that seem untouchable, to a level where people can relate to them which is why the MCs are so aggressive. It's a double-edged sword, really.
the show's PD and writers not doing a great job this season..the MCs just trying to manage the situation and turn plain moments into entertaining and funny situations for a variety show and not a documentary show
ReplyDelete"Kang Ho Dong proved to be a loud mouthed MC with not a speck of respect for others."
ReplyDelete" I always knew the three MCs were dumb as rocks but what are the excuses
for the PDs and writers? They thought they could air this without
trouble? Looks like the producers are as stupid as the MCs."
Kang Ho Dong has lost it. With the tax evasion scandal, he proved how much he really respect things. He must reflect by losing weight.
The really heartbreaking part about this is that Tsuyoshi is definitely aware of the tension between Japan and Korea right now, and probably half-expected to be treated like that... especially at the airport. Aside from his... drunken episode in 2009, he's got a pretty clean image as someone who is level-headed and aware. :(
ReplyDeleteI watched the episode as soon as I could without the subtitles, and the comments are absolutely right. I didn't even have to fully understand what the hosts were saying to know they were being EXTREMELY rude.
The whole thing was... undignified, to say the least. It was noisy. They barely let him talk. And you could see that Tsuyoshi looked a little taken aback at some points. It was worse than the episode where they hosted the Wachowski Siblings, the people who created The Matrix. T_T
Actually, Knee Drop Guru is a talk show.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice and really shocking to me. But these sorts of sentiments are a good thing. I won't question them. :)
ReplyDeleteBut the monkey sounds and other various animal sounds... I don't remember Sean and Jung Hye Young being treated like that on Knee Drop Guru. Or Hong Suk Chul.
ReplyDeleteTalk shows, by nature, ARE rather aggressive. The point of a talk show is to TALK about certain issues, bring things to light, and clear the air. A good host would've been able to do that.
Even if the show hasn't had foreign guests up until recently, the producers should have prepared for it better if they were going to go in this new direction. Especially in the case where someone as famous and important as Tsuyoshi from Japan's legendary idol group is guesting... they should've have been "still figuring out" what they were going to do. They should have already been prepared.
If they weren't prepared to host foreign celebrities, they shouldn't have invited them to be on the show to begin with. There are no excuses for this.
shouldn't have*
ReplyDeletesorry for the typo -_-
I think you missed the part where I wrote "they should definitely be more professional about it"...and that's why I'm saying they shouldn't have foreign guests on it in the first place. Clearly the producers lack the skill to prepare for them.
ReplyDeleteyou're partially mistaken. alot of regular japanese citizens arent taught the negative aspects of their history involving china/koera/SE asia. so basically they have no clue the gravity of the situation because japanese education is pretty regulated by their government. so your comment was kinda rude considering all this.
ReplyDeleteGreat post. I was checking continuously this blog and I am impressed!
ReplyDeleteExtremely useful info particularly the closing part :) I
handle such info much. I was seeking this particular info for a long time.
