Article: Sung Yuri "I cried from guilt for my stunt double"
Source: OSEN via Nate
"A female action actress was used as my stunt double for an abuse scene. I cried out of guilt for her. At first, I wanted to complete the scene on my own but got scared after I was hit a few times and asked the director to bring in a stand-in for me. I was so sorry but another stand-in was called in for the scene. I thought that someone with more weight to them would be used but she was a small, frail action actress, and I couldn't help but cry out of guilt as I watched her get hit for me. I regret the decision."
1. [+599, -96] If you were guilty, you should've just done the scene yourself. You basically just kept watching and did nothing about your guilt.
2. [+469, -84] A thin actress? Then are you trying to say that it's okay for someone heavier to be abused?
3. [+470, -97] Reading this after reading another article about Choi Soo Jong being involved in a horse accident, just wow... She should've just stuck with the scene and get hit a few times. She's being paid for her job.
4. [+110, -10] Hul... she's being paid hundreds of thousands of dollars and it's not like the scene was some elaborate action scene that called for physical help, she just didn't want to be hit a few times so she called for a stunt double??... It hurts ANYONE to be hit... And what is she even saying about the body shapes? It doesn't matter whether you're thin or bigger, it still hurts the same. Aigoo, this woman...
5. [+98, -10] I'm pretty sure there are other actresses that are willing to do it themselves, why even use an actress with a mindset like this?
6. [+72, -1] I'm suddenly reminded of a scene that left the greatest impression of me... That scene in 'Stairway to Heaven' when Lee Chwi Hyang slapped Park Shin Hye really hard. That scene took real, hard 30 slaps to complete.
7. [+70, -4] Not good to read at all;;; Why do you think Ha Ji Won went to such lengths to do all of the action scenes herself? tsk tsk tsk
8. [+65, -7] One of the many reasons Sung Yuri is still not regarded as a real actress
-

I'm on the netizens side..
ReplyDeleteWow, the comments are harsh. She was scared, what could she do? This could have meant more than just a few slaps to her.
ReplyDeleteAnd yes she is getting paid to do her job but is the stunt double not getting paid to do her job?!?!
To clarify some of those wrong netizens (tsk tsk) about her getting paid, I read on Asianwiki that Sung Yuri participated in this film without pay. But I know it doesn't fully justify her letting the stand in to get "abused" for her
ReplyDeleteWow, k-netizens make a huge deal over everything. The most dramatic people. I can't help but chuckle. A stand in gets paid to do his or her job. It is what it is.
ReplyDeleteeven kids can make scenes like that.
ReplyDeletefail actress is fail
Wow, what movies have you been watching in which kids actually do get hit?!
ReplyDeleteEven so if it meant too much for her to handle emotionally, she should have read the script so that she would prepared for it. Personally I think the stand in is such a cheap way of getting passed it because acting is a way of portraying the emotion of the situations the actors are involved in. By her bowing out when she said she would do it, she has lessoned her impact as an actress. In this respect, I agree with the comments that criticize that she is not a real actress, especially when there are actresses that have let themselves be physical participants of the emotional aspect in similar scenes.
ReplyDeleteWhy is everyone so ready to judge others? It's punishment enough for her to live with a guilt conscience . Why is there so much lack of empathy? It's also abuse when adding to her misery by harshly criticizing.
ReplyDeleteI also agree. And I want to point out all the child stars in "Silenced" (Crucible/Dogani) who all had to endure sexual harassment (their parents always monitored these scenes) to create the horror effect of that movie's message. For those very young children to endure sexual harassment for the movie, I think Sung Yuri also needs to step up her game as a true actress
ReplyDeleteDogani/Silenced/Crucible had scenes where kids had to endure being touched and "sexually harassed". In addition, in one of the interviews, one of the male actor said he got hit multiple times in the movie and had bruises from it.
ReplyDeleteyes, you're right, they both get their money for what they're doing but no matter how much i like Sung Yuri it seems like she's trying too hard to show how thoughtful, honest and so on she is
ReplyDeleteTo be honest, I don't know anything about K-movie/drama but I'm shocked that they're actually being slapped and hurt?? In most american/european movies I watched, actors use trick to pretend they have been slapped or such.
ReplyDeleteI remember I read reviews of The Crucible and people said they were shocked that the kids had to reenact sexual harassment, and so I am. Seriously, wtf, it's the first time I hear about it, this is sick.
I watched the movie Mysterious Skin and they used tricks during sex scene with kids and they were realistic enough for me, thank you very much.
Could someone tell me more about it?
I'm also reminded of the child actress in 'I Miss You' that did the rape scene. I remember her saying at the press con that it was very traumatic for her because of all of the emotions involved, but she still carried through with it.
ReplyDeleteNo pain, no gain, as they say. Some actors/actresses go through grueling/scarring things to make their roles seem as believable as possible. Hugh Jackman lost a LOT of fat and became VERY muscular for his Les Mis part and that wasn't even a requirement! Anne Hathaway chopped off all her hair DURING filming and that wasn't necessary either.
ReplyDeleteThe lesson is in order to be taken seriously as a grade-A actress, you have to take your role as seriously as possible. BE the role itself. If she had done the scene herself, she would've gotten a lot of credit. Now all she'll get is criticism.
I think she shouldn't share that annectode
ReplyDeletewth they actually hit each other for real? I don't understand why she decided to share this info. did she think people would applaud her for letting someone else take the hits? usually abuse scenes are really intense and the acting needs to be great
ReplyDeleteThere are only "tricks" being used if the hits are to the face, where scars and injuries show up immediately. In American movies and tv series, though, a woman slapping a man is a real slap and directors try to get it done in as few takes as possible. A slapping scene is also one of the last scenes to be filmed that day.
ReplyDeleteIn K-dramas... Idk. A woman getting hit... those are usually body hits, right? What drama is she even talking about?
Everyone gets scared, even actors. I get that, but...this sentence...
ReplyDelete"I thought that someone with more weight to them would be used but she was a small, frail action actress, and I couldn't help but cry out of guilt as I watched her get hit for me. I regret the decision."
...just rubs me the wrong way :/ As if she'd have zero sympathy if the replacement were larger. Holy awful word choice, Batman.
- Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis also underwent rigorous training in ballet for Black Swan.
ReplyDelete- Natalie Portman even shaved her hair off for V for Vendetta and Demi Moore did the same for G.I Jane.
- Renee Zellweger had to put on 25 lbs. for Bridget Jones' Diary and then drop it all + even more weight for her role in Chicago.
- Vivica A. Fox went through intensive martial arts lessons for Kill Bill Vol. 1.
- Christian Bale lost 63 lbs. for The Machinist.
- Charlize Theron gained 30 lbs. for her role in Monster (which won her an Academy Award AND a Golden Globe).
The most shocking one, I think, is Lisbeth Salander who had to shave her head and get piercings in her nose, eyebrow, lip, and nipple for Girl With a Dragon Tattoo.
Oh, and Steve Carrell's chest waxing scene in 40 Year Old Virgin... 100% legit. Ouch!
Sung Yuri needs to realize that to be taken seriously as an actress, she needs to put in the hard work. Actors don't just stand around and read lines, they have to literally BECOME their character. If their character is a woman with an abusive husband, they have to put up with getting hit.
And tbh, playing the role of an abused wife is a walk in the park compared to having to get your nipple pierced.
uggh k netizens, she was scared ok
ReplyDeleteYou honestly don't see what's wrong here? She's being paid to do her job as an actress in an ACTION movie and yet she complains about getting hurt when she gets hit.
ReplyDeleteNEWSFLASH: EVERYONE WOULD GET HURT WHEN THEY GET HIT.
And what makes it worse is the fact that she has the nerve to say that she was hoping that the staff got a fat person to be the stunt double. Oh that's right, since fat people are bigger (btw, take into account what Korea's definition of fat is), they can do something that is a part of her job with ease. NO. And then has the audacity to feel remorse for a skinny stunt double. She basically just revealed that she wouldn't feel the same way if it was a person bigger than her. Just like what one of the netizens mentioned, Park Shin Hye got slapped 30 times just to complete one scene in a drama. And it wasn't even an action drama at that.
Easily put, if she was weak enough to not do the action scenes in an ACTION MOVIE, then she shouldn't have been desperate to accept the movie role of an ACTION movie.
They should not actually hit anyone. There must definitely be many ways to go around it. I remember I could not believe it when I saw PSH hit so many times in quick succession. But surely those were tricks?
ReplyDeleteYeah, the comments here are really harsh, and I'd feel sorry for her if she read them, but sadly if you want to be taken seriously, you have to go through a lot of painful preparation for these types of scenes. It's completely understandable to be scared of being hit, having to play an abused wife, but maybe she should be careful not to take those sorts of roles again.
ReplyDeleteWhat gets me is her assuming that a heavier woman would be able to take those scenes, like someone who isn't a stick figure can handle the abuse better. That makes no sense whatsoever.
Acting is probably too hard for her, please do porn!
ReplyDeletePorn is acting too you know and some of it is just as tramatic for the actors/actresses especially hardcore stuff.

DeleteThat's why I applaud Ha Ji Won, she really got beat up and even had a black eye for a movie where she played a boxer, but still did it whole heartedly, and even after that she still does action movies coz it's her passion.
ReplyDeleteThis is why Sung Yuri is not considered a real actress in Korea. Everytime she is cast in a movie or a drama people roll their eyes because she is a terrible actress.
ReplyDeleteShe's among the first generation idol-actress to start acting, but she even up to this day failed to get any respect as an actress unlike Eugene, Yoon Eun Hye and Jung Ryeo Won.
Thank you SO much for adding weight to my comment! <3
ReplyDeleteyou're right. I was a bit confused too coz i thought dramas with scenes like that shud be done with camera tricks.
ReplyDeleteAgree!
ReplyDeleteI think she was talking about an indie movie she starred in 2010 called 누나 or also known as The Boy's Sister. It will be in the cinemas this January. "It's a story of a waitress who was suffering from domestic violence; she eventually finds her true self by meeting a student. " -Hancinema. You can watch the trailer here: http://www.hancinema.net/video.php?table=film&id=30337
ReplyDeletefirst, her acting was so bad in every single drama i've seen.......
ReplyDeletenow, i just lost all respects. she even had the nerve to say all the words out loud omg
LOL why blame her. have you watched the trailer of movie? She had to lost a lot of weight and suffer a lot to film this movie. Once more, she filmed it for FREE, because it's an indie movie, not commercial movie. The movie was filmed in 2010 but have to wait for a long time of money support, editing and liscence to air now. If u google, u 'll know she had to filmed under the rain for 12 hours and got exhausted. Her image in this movie is totally different from before. She looks so thin, sick and injured. She also wants to do those action scenes, just because she had to film a lot until the end, she need health, that's why she had to let a stand-in do that and feel guilty. That's unfair to blame her. should appreciate her hard work instead.
ReplyDeleteI saw a BTS for May Queen recently and the slap was real between Kim Yoo Jung and the other child actress and the adult actress on KYJ. I'm not sure if it applies to all, but most likely slapping/a few hitting scenes are real on K-drama/movies. Idk.
ReplyDeleteI think she was paid, but not her usual fees since the movie doesn't have a big budget. She mentioned that she took this role coz she wants people to see a new side to her (..passion and hard work in acting). But this statement/action of hers kinda defeats the purpose of her wanting to be "respected" as an actress.
ReplyDeleteI never knew she still wasn't considered as a real actress...after all those dramas and his leading men, I always thought she was respected as Eugene's level..
ReplyDeleteShe's too old for porn...
ReplyDeleteOH for crying out loud!
ReplyDeleteNope she is not considered as a real actress at all, she is mostly known for her pretty face, not for her acting. I remember when she was chosen to be the lead in Queen Seondeok, but so many koreans protested, so the production had to remove her as the lead and replace her with Lee Yeo Won. Koreans bash her acting but praise her for her beauty, they say she only continues to get parts because she has a pretty face,
ReplyDeleteIn my opinion, her acting is passable not good but not horrible either, but she lacks screen presence and charm.
No, I don't see what is wrong with someone who get scared of being hit and so doesn't want to do it and feel guilty after that. k netizens are just judmental bichtes. Of course she's dumb to want a bigger person lol. But she's not dumb because she was scared of being hurt. And no she was payed for being hit, that is what stunt double are for.
ReplyDeleteAnd lol at you if you actually think actors in action movie do their own stunts, lololololololol, even in americans movie they don't do it! Stuntmen and stuntwomen are here for that; The actors who actually do their own stunt are very rare.
Natalie portman didn't even dance in black swan! it was never, NEVER her but always her stunt woman, a real ballerina, who even press charges againt the producters of black swan because they told everyone that it was Natalie who danced when it was her. LOL
you're so naive.
Getting hit is scary. Duh.
ReplyDeleteBut she is an actress. Actors do all kinds of weird shit for different roles.
And when an actor signs a contract to be in a drama or movie, there is a stipulation there where you waive your right to sue if you suffer MINOR injuries. (Obviously, if you're going to be in an action movie and you have to jump off of a speeding train and roll to the ground and break you leg, you can sue because that is not a minor injury.) But a swollen cheek because you were smacked?
Lol. No.
If Sung Yuri doesn't want to be hit or go through all the shit OTHER actors have to do, then she can go ahead and find a different career. Maybe a desk job, where her chances of being slapped are slim to none unless she's as big a pussy there as she is on a filming set.
What what what?!!! She was supposed to be hit irl?! That is crazy, don't actors pretend to get hit and ACT like they were really hit (with the help of camera tricks and sound effects).
ReplyDeleteWhat she said was stupid though. No matter your build, pain is pain.
Do they get hit for real? So confused.
ReplyDeleteNo wonder actors are more respect than idols in korea. Well if they do all these things like the actors you named.
ReplyDeleteYeah most scenes I see from Hollywood are quite fake. No one's going allow themselves to be slapped, punched and kicked for real.
