I've received a lot of requests for both SM and YG. There aren't a lot of responses to either related articles because the discussion is not centered on SM and YG losing/making profits, but rather on another issue.
The entertainment industry is basically trying to chalk up the profits produced by the gaming industry as their own to the media (to cover for the loss they're seeing), but netizens caught on to that ploy and are calling them out on it. This is referred to as 'bubbling', or blowing a bubble into the truth to make something bigger/grander than it is in reality.
I've included an extra article below to kind of give you a general picture.
-
Article: The power of 'Gangnam Style'... Culture Service sees its first profits
Source: Joongang Ilbo via Nate
1. [+33, -3] Don't even bullsh*t me. The gaming industry is the one that turned up all these profits but K-Pop is trying to paint it as their own! 70% of the profits came from the gaming industry, who are you trying to fool!
2. [+24, -3] It's the power of the gaming industry.
3. [+15, -3] Yang Hyun Suk, Psy, you better quit with your media play. How much did you lobby for this. Why are you distorting the data by taking the numbers for culture profits to Psy's name. Stupid journalist. Psy released his music in the 3rd quarter, which the numbers for haven't even been released yet. You guys are so pathetic. This is why Psy's being suspected for all sorts of crap.

Article: YG made $13.8 million USD up to September... How much including Lee Hi?
Source: OSEN via Nate
1. [+143, -32] We already know that the entertainment industry is barely crawling by...... Did Yang force you to write this article.... Seeing as how it's OSEN, looks like I'm right ã…‹ã…‹ã…‹
2. [+129, -27] Oh, it's OSEN
3. [+124, -29] Look at YG media playing about their money the minute SM is revealed to have cut a loss and people start finding out that the entertainment industry is bubbling their profits
4. [+36, -4] Lee Hi is just a rookie, why is her name even being mentioned in the title;; She's not big enough to bring in millions yet..
5. [+36, -1] The intentions behind this article is so obvious... Yesterday and today, there have been so many reports of the entertainment industry bubbling and lying about their numbers, causing people to sell off their stocks. And here YG comes with their media play showing off their money... How many people will actually believe it and start buying entertainment stock again?

Cue defensive yg fans
ReplyDeleteK
Deleteuh... when they say gaming industry, does that refer to video games? coz what i imagine is casinos, etc... LOL
ReplyDeleteYes, video games. They're lumped with entertainment under 'culture'.
ReplyDeleteLee hayi's profits aren't included at all. I read the article and it went up to September. Its more from Big bang's and 2ne1's releases and concerts.
ReplyDeletevideos games, mostly MMOs/computer games though.
ReplyDeletelol korean gaming industry? ok i know koreas full of gaming nerds but when was the last time they made any successful game??? their biggest game is starcraft and thats an american game! no one gives a shit about korea produced games lol
ReplyDelete"This is why Psy's being suspected for all sorts of crap."
ReplyDeleteouch
Anyone knows what are the big games in South Korea now(not anipang since I highly doubt people would spend a lot of money on coins)?
ReplyDeleteMaplestory, Audition, Sudden attack, Rakion, 02Jam, Superstar live and Pangya used to be popular where I live, but nobody plays them anymore, at least in where I live, so I was a little taken aback when I found out that the gaming industry is more rosy than the music industry in Korea.
Well to be fair, that's because they only make online games.
ReplyDeleteI remember IGN sent a person to Korea for a gaming convention and they were saying it was all online shooters and rpgs etc. Stuff which never comes out in the west, but is SUPER popular there.
Also console gaming is dying in Asia. So there is no point for them to make a game for the PS3 or 360.
You can just see how badly Japanese companies are struggling right now.
Haha, I thought it was the revenue produced by the casinos too, but I would expect the casinos to share less than 30% of the total profit with K-pop.
ReplyDeleteThere is something I don't understand...WHY is everyone acting as if SM made huge losses? They didn't meet the expectations of 'experts' but their profit still increased by 70% compared to the same period last year. YG's income increased by ~20% but everyone is like: Of course, it's YG/ YG is the best etc.
ReplyDeleteSM earned almost the same in JUST 3 months, but no one seems to appreciate it.
I'm not saying that YG doesn't deserve this, but it's unfair.
..And what is wrong with these K-netizen? I think they are in denial ...
It always cracks me up how one of the comments is always like 'Oh, it's osen' XD
ReplyDeleteOh gosh don't even mention it, I posted a comment over at AKP and the YG butt hurts were bashing me /facepalm.
ReplyDeleteKorea actually bans gambling so you are probably unlikely to find a casino there sadly.
ReplyDeleteMMO do very well there like Aion, Terra etc
ReplyDeleteAnd new MMO games like Blade and Soul that's coming out of Korea is getting alot of attention
That shit look amazing tbh
Casinos? But gambling on Korea is illegal. Korean people can't even gamble in other countries because it is against the law.
ReplyDeleteMMO games
ReplyDeleteAion, blade and soul and the likes
Korean gaming industry is a joke compared to Japan's. They're just sore over it and even more sore that the K-pop industry is doing so poorly and Japan is rejecting Hallyu artists...
ReplyDeleteEven Kara is doing badly in Japan. They sold as much as SNSD did, which is way lower than their usual sales.
Ah, dude and all the people in the comments below. The korean gaming industry equals COMPETITIVE GAMING or (e-sports) The koreans are considered the best in the world at many games and there are MANY tv shows in korea where teams play against each other. Like this one. (http://www(DOT)youtube(DOT)com/watch?v=ohKL-K4d7RA)
ReplyDeletelol, I don't understand why they just can't have common sense and improve the quality of idols if companies are so hardpressed to debut idols. Same with their mmos, very little originality. K-pop might be getting internatonal attention or w/e but the general Korean public sure as hell don't give a shit.
ReplyDeletePeople buy stocks based on how well they think a company will perform. If a company performed lower than expectations, then confidence falls and some will sell their stock. This doesn't mean that SM is failing but that their stocks were overvalued. So the recent massive dip in stocks (from 69,400 krw 42,600 krw in past 3 days) is just market adjustment and now the stocks are more in alignment with the company's real worth.
ReplyDeleteDo netizens understand how popular Gangnam style is outside of Korea cos seriously it's EVERYWHERE!! I find those figures about YG's earnings believable cos Gangnam Style is still going strong here.
ReplyDeleteI will never understand how you can be a stan of a company. A singer, a actor, a idol I get it but the company ? lol
ReplyDeleteyou obviously know nothing about korean gaming industry so stop "writing"
ReplyDeleteI've heard from Korean fans about YG inflating his numbers so people will buy stock. I thought everybody knew already considering how he is the one that's always releasing shit about his income throughout out the year, while other companies release theirs towards the end of the year.
ReplyDeleteFunny how the self-proclaimed "chic idgaf" fandom is the one that gets their panties in a twist the quickest over the stupidest shit.
ReplyDeleteWell for YG, it's understandable because everybody is the same there. With a few exceptions like Gummy and PSY, but think about it, they all dress the same, wear the same clothes, their music tends to sound the same, even Epik High has been transformed into this Big Bang clone. The music videos are practically the same, 2NE1 and Big Bang are in this lets walk around phase. It's the same shit, over and over. They are called "unique" but they have no individualism because they're all so interchangable, it's not even funny. YG is smart for giving Lee Hi the song he did, rather than another bullshit ass YG track, but its all up to whether he continues it or not.
ReplyDeleteYG has no diversity. His artists don't have a "style", YG has a style. His artists don't have a sound, YG has a sound. So technically, they're stanning an artist because it's really the same shit regardless of whose voice is singing it.
Amen. Imagine posting this on AKP. Smh at YG stans. Stan whoever you want, but don't act like hot shit that's better than everyone else.
DeleteMost of YG stans are "12 to 15 years old "
Deletefor those doubting the power of gaming, call of duty:back ops 2 made 500 million dollars in one day. in korea they have a huge gaming culture and their pro players even get backed by huge corporations. it's really big
ReplyDeletethat doesn't mean it is making huge amounts of money for yg
ReplyDeleteEven the haters love talking about YG.
ReplyDeleteThat's debatable.
ReplyDeleteFrom what I've heard, it's because the same period last year SM wasn't doing anything. Which is why it was such a huge increase but still a let down because they did a lot this year (in comparison to last year during this period).
ReplyDeleteWhy? Compared to the Korean market, the international music industry pays crazy money for performances and Psy's beens making the rounds all over the world. Not only that but mp3's sell for a lot more abroad than anywhere else and Psy got no.1 in 11 countries (or more lol). Surely he should be rolling in money?
ReplyDeleteI actually never thought about the fact that Gangnam Style came out pretty late in the year; that comment made a good point. What about the rest of the year? YG did well but we have to give credit where it's due. The gaming industry is indeed huge. There were several Korean gamers competing in the EVO fighting game tournament in Vegas earlier this year (a lot of them making it to the finals), and a lot of the best Starcraft players reside in Korea. Their players are well-invested and the culture is pretty large. I'm all for acknowledging success but it's another thing to dismiss the merits of other markets.
ReplyDeleteI just think YG has a very strong company culture which is why their artists seem to have similar ideas. YG dynamics are very interesting. I disagree. All their artists have a style (musical, personality w/e) that's theirs. It's easier to see when they are promoting as solos bc as groups they have to compromise a lot precisely bc of these differences.
ReplyDeleteThat's really sad if YG/SM/JYP inflate their profits. I mean they barely earn that much as it is. 10 millions for 9 months? After all the shit that's been happening in YGE? That is like peanuts. Sometimes I wonder how the other noname brand entertainment houses even survive.
ReplyDeleteWhy no SM articles then Netizenbuzz?
ReplyDeleteI wanna see how people react to the stock news too.
It's a domino effect. No buzz about them at all?
No silly, if they are publicly traded companies they all release quarterly reports. SM just released theirs as well. The problem has been that all entertainment company stocks have been overvalued. There is just a market correction going on right now.
ReplyDeleteBecause unlike other companies, YG let PSY take most of the profits from "Gangnam Style" and all other projects released under YG Entertainment.
ReplyDeleteIt's not YG that's actually getting the money, even though they're earning it. At the end of the day, the one that walks away with most of the money PSY is making is PSY himself.
I dunno why this is an issue tbh. Personally, in the end. Its the music that matters, not how much someone earn. I get that they are pissed off cuz gaming is the major contributor and errbody makes kpop sounds as the main one. Oh well, its a pride thing i guess.
ReplyDeleteBusted Big Time!
ReplyDeleteIf you think about it a bit, it's not that unusual to be a fan of a company. One major example: Apple. There are people out there that trust (possibly even love) the Apple brand to the extent that they'd wait in lines for hours just to get the newest product. I'm sure you've also come across people that are 'loyal' to Apple, the products, and have a tonne of admiration for Steve Jobs. Isn't that stanning a company?
ReplyDeletePsy's international profit is no longer going to YG. its now taken by his US label with Scooter. the minute YG handed him over to Scooter, any profit he made internationally went out of YG's hands. the only earning YG are making from Psy at the moment are from his korean sales and projects.
ReplyDeleteIn korean culture department, culture tourism and related education take about 50%, gaming industry about 20%, broadcating cultural things (drama patent exporting etc.) about 15%, and kpop only accountable for less than 5%. So when koreans talk about hallyu and culture, kpop rarely appears but somehow international kpop fans think hallyu is all about kpop which is completely wrong. As i mentioned, kpop only takes responsible for about 5% in hallyu business.
ReplyDeleteI see, O shit! Thanks for the explanation. I just hope Psy is making big bucks. In Korea Gangnam Style still has crazy high broadcast points soo at least YG gets something from the appearance of the song on shows (but obviously not that much).
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info. I'm happy to hear Psy is making money.
ReplyDeletethe loyalty to Apple and the admiration for steve jobs (when he was still alive) reminds me of a sect to be honest. I always find this creepy.
ReplyDeleteI only know Lee Hi because of Epik High. -.-
ReplyDeleteIt's fine that you personally find that type of behaviour creepy lol. I had just wanted to point out that 'stanning' a company is rather common, and now that I think about it- it's sort of like an extension of brand loyalty.
ReplyDeleteStarcraft 2 and League of Legends.
ReplyDeleteHave a talk with Formula-1 fans. Ferrari-stans are a worldwide tribe.
ReplyDeleteSM has many artists than YG has..
ReplyDeleteGood day! I simply want to give a huge thumbs up for the good data you’ve right here on this post.
