Jo Kwon gets flak for his Halloween costume

Article: Jo Kwon transforms into a bizarre nun shedding tears of blood... 'Hideous'

Source: OSEN via Nate

1. [+462, -121] Did he absolutely have to turn a nun costume into such a matter? There are so many other Halloween costumes. Even if he did choose to be a nun, he shouldn't have uploaded pictures like this. The real nuns probably feel bad looking at it...

2. [+436, -113] I don't think it's right to cosplay someone that sacrifices and dedicates their entire life to religion, especially for Halloween.

3. [+310, -42] Hul...........

4. [+138, -8] This is my first time leaving a reply on a public space like this. As a religious person, this picture turned me off so badly that I felt the need to login and leave a comment. How dare people praise his sense of humor? Or is it just that there are more disrespectful people like Jo Kwon... There are so many Halloween costumes, so why the need to choose a nun and turn it into something horrifying like this. It pisses me off. I hope he fixes the head on his shoulders.

5. [+120, -4] If you think about it, this is such a disrespectful act. Where is the need to dress as a nun and rub bloody tears all over yourself?

6. [+111, -3] I think it's hilarious that he's making sure to celebrate another country's holiday ㅋㅋㅋ Why don't you remember Hangul Day in that time

7. [+94, -4] Aren't you supposed to dress as a ghost or a monster for Halloween? Why a nun?

8. [+91, -2] I'm pretty sure Jo Kwon's family is religious as well so this is ridiculous to me that he would do something like this to a nun. Jo Kwon-ssi, do not dirty the women who dedicate their entire lives to helping others like this!

9. [+91, -5] Religion is such a sensitive topic. Just what was he thinking uploading something like this to show? I'm not religious myself but I don't think this is right. I'm really disappointed in him with this...

10. [+88, -5] Did he upload this thinking it was hilarious? I'm starting to hate him more now

  8. Really why are Koreans 'celebrating Halloween' anyway? Jokwon's trying too hard to be like Lady Gaga.

  9. lol at I-Netizens, I start to think you're even more stupid than K-Netizens. So you dislike religions and religious people, alright. but this is not only about religion, it's about RESPECT. If you think it's alright for Jokwon to do this then you're just being a rude asshole. Even K-Netizens who aren't religious understand the problem:

"9. [+91, -5] Religion is such a sensitive topic. Just what was he thinking uploading something like this to show? I'm not religious myself but I don't think this is right. I'm really disappointed in him with this..."

    and let's not forget this:

"8. [+91, -2] I'm pretty sure Jo Kwon's family is religious as well so this is ridiculous to me that he would do something like this to a nun. Jo Kwon-ssi, do not dirty the women who dedicate their entire lives to helping others like this!"

Imo, religious or not, even if you dislike religions, you have to admit that this is disrespectful to do this to women who dedicate their life to help others.

  12. So its wrong for religious people to feel offended by something like this?

I don't support picketing ones lifestyle, especially if it doesn't affect them directly - but this is something that affects religious people because nuns are sacred and females who devote themselves to God. You may not believe in God or be religious at all- but at the end of the day, bashing people who believe in something is just as shitty as religious people bashing people who dont believe in something- or share the same views.

If a religious person feels offended, they can. Stfu.

  14. I'm a free thinker, not religious at all, but this kind of costume is really a bit too much... I can see why people overreacted

  21. i was going to be a nun for halloween

  22. so jo kwon's role model now is Gaga, huh?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Allkpop posted this same article except that all the netizen comments were positive. Figures.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think this would be offensive if Jokwon was actually trying to make a statement against the Catholic church. But since it's just a Halloween costume then it's not a big deal.

The point of Halloween is to dress in shocking or gruesome ways. That's practically the only day when that's acceptable. Dressing as a nun for Halloween is actually quite common; and you're allowed to make your costume as scary as you want regardless of what kind of costume it is.

Since Halloween is not really celebrated in Korea, K-netizens just took everything too seriously. Nothing new I guess :P.

  25. What I don't get is how its wrong for people to deem this slightly offensive, yet its okay for people to get mad at other people for finding it offensive and telling them they're overreacting. Double standards. Just like some people see this as harmless, others have the right to find this offensive.

    ReplyDelete
  26. This is why I'm an atheist.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Okay of all things he becomes a role that's mostly taken on by women. He chose to be a nun seriously? A possessed priest, okay yeah I would get it since your a guy. But your a male and dressing up as a nun .. just come out of the closet already. Shoot. He acts super feminine ALL the time, he talks like a gay person and he goes to Lady Gaga concerts. That screams homosexual to me!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Look at all the "tolerant secularists/atheists" tsk. I see you for what you are~~~ hypocrites.

  29. what's the catholic version of gaedok?

  30. I dony understand some of us americans are so blasphemous against.religion. Why cant we just respect each other and peoples beliefs? Honestly some of you american koreaboos are hilarioud most koreans i know are very religious. Just like a lot of kpop idols are too.

    ReplyDelete
  31. the response is understandable. even if religion isn't in the topic, that costume is creepy as fuck.

    ReplyDelete
  32. ehhh I'm religious but it's w/e to me tbh. at the end of the day, it's just a nun costume... doesn't affect me or my beliefs at all.

but I can see why other people might be sensitive about this. Just think if this was a muslim costume or a jewish costume... how disrespectful that would be. I think us as a western society have been desensitized of christian images and symbolism... but these symbols are still very very sacred to some people. This is a kind of appropriation.

    ReplyDelete
  33. people should respect all religions including Islam, Buddhism, Christianity, Chinese folk religion, Hinduism, Jainism, Judaism, Paganism, Shinto, Sikhism, Taoism and other, if you're not religions, it's your choice but there is no need to make fun of or hate on religious people for expressing their disappointment in such acts or expressing how they feel.
when you do that your not acting any better than K-netizens and you should hate on yourself as well.

    ReplyDelete
  34. that picture is wrong on so many levels... and a man dressed like a nun? jo kwon u are becoming a bad joke

What you ignorant children seem to not understand is that religion is just a sensitive and important topic as race. So if someone was to dress up as your race in a mocking manner, wouldn't you feel offended? I'm not Catholic, but I do think this is a bit disrespectful to those who are.

Unlike you, I respect others and their religions. So if you have nothing positive to say about "religious" people, then just keep your comments to yourself. It's actually people like you who are "fucking annoying, "the crap of the society", and "going to hell". :)

religion n race is sensitive issue. if he dressed as dead Mohammad, will he still be laughing next day.

    ReplyDelete
  39. entertaining? nope
    sick joke? YES!

  40. I just can't comprehend with you people who say that:

"religious people are the crap of the society
    Jo Kwon FTW!"
    "Religious people are overreacting,
    Just go to hell."

Religion is something to be respected, not mocked. It is a topic as sensitive as race, gender, and equality. To say that they are over reacting, you should understand that Jo Kwon had portrayed a nun in an unfavorable manner. Surely, the Christian community would not see this situation in a positive manner. I don't think I need to emphasize the role of nuns in the Christian world, but I guess you know that they are as equally important as priests. And really, you should know by now that MANY people with religion adhere and follow their teachings seriously.

Going back, the k-netizens reaction is understandable but by bashing Jo Kwon, their hands are not that clean either. So I guess this issue is in the grey area.

To the people who say religious people are crap, annoying, etc, please do humanity a favor and just learn the concept of RESPECT :)

  41. Lol, people on THIS forum asking people to show respect of anything at all is the height of hypocrisy. Netizenbuzz has the most disrespectful internet community I've ever seen outside of 4chan and ED.

Also he's cosplaying Lady Gaga. But Korean netizens are far too fucking dumb to pick up on a subtlety like that.

  42. ^^ dude come down, NB just translates the comments of K-netizens!! She is just running this site as a neutral person!! The reason this site seemed disrespectful is because people leave hateful and rude comments.. and those people are you, me and any user of this site!! When the article is positive about our fav idols/celebs or are on par with our thoughts then we leave positive comments while its just the opposite on negative articles!! Nb doesnt comment or give her views so it's literally us who are making fuss here!!

  43. they don't celebrate halloween so I can see why it would be offensive. I don't think their horror movies have the same type of imagery.

Tell that to those abused and molested by members of the Catholic hierarchy. That's not tolerance or respect. Or are you going to let that go because ABUSE IS TOLERATED IN KOREA!!!!11!!!!! ?

  54. I thought akp already has a lot of dumbasses..i thought wrong!

People, even you're not religious or you're atheists doesn't mean that you can be disrespectful of one's religion. Grow up.

I, for one, is not that religious but I found this disrespectful and somehow sacrilegious especially since he's even using a cross in the picture..

anyway religion aside, he totally looked creepy and hideous..

    ReplyDelete
  55. Yes, this picture is just plain disrespectful.
    He even used a cross.

Other people's comment makes me laugh so much. Cosplaying Lady Gaga? Enjoying Halloween? That's not even a good reason to cover for your idol's mistake.

    Ignorant much?

    ReplyDelete
  56. Kwon is really goofy and silly, and I know he would never ever try to offend somebody in the way some people are accusing him of. I'm sure if he knew he would apologize. And you say "Why does he do it in the first place?" Well like I said, he's just goofy and probably thought it was funny, and it is. Give the boy some slack, he's not a horrible person. He Tweets about God and religion very frequently, and I think that people need to give him a break. He's not a bad person, he just is himself and sometimes he might do stuff that people don't like, but I don't think he was trying to convey anything rude or offense.

    ReplyDelete
  57. As a Roman Catholic this is very disturbing and inappropriate. It's not some kind of a costume people just can wear wherever they want. it's a sacred thing that every catholic respect. So, seeing this makes me angry really. and to think that the one who made this is an annoying person for me. :(
