Why are viewers accepting of the gay themes in 'To the Beautiful You'?

Article: 'To the Beautiful You', why are viewers not pressured by the gay elements in the drama?

Source: Newsen via Nate

The article talks about why viewers aren't turned off by the gay themes being portrayed in the drama and goes on to speculate that it's because the characters are cute, especially Lee Hyun Woo with his crush. The article then compares the drama to other dramas with gay themes like 'Coffee Prince' and 'You're Handsome' and says that the gay themes in any of these didn't turn off viewers because they were presented in a comedic/light hearted manner.

1. [+429, -3] Because we knew Sulli was a girl

2. [+326, -10] Because the characters are hot ㅋㅋㅋ If there were ugly gays on the show, the show would've been over

3. [+273, -3] We already knew Sulli was a girl from the beginning.

Yeah... Korea still has a long way to go.

  4. This just reminded me that Taemin and Junghyun (SHINee) kiss, fanservice on their show, what do netizens think about that? Is that an article that you can translate for us with the best replies?

please tell me that you're not that stupid to believe that only in Korea people prefer to see hot characters instead of ugly one

  6. But what about Reply 1997? It's getting a lot of love. I guess the gay theme isn't as prevalent as in here, but it's still obvious and it's there. And it's more real, in a sense, since neither Seo In Guk or Hoya are actually girls.

    1. true. The gay theme was really strongly portrayed in the show. Wonder how knetizens feel about Hoya taking up such a role. But to his credit he did pull off his shy and kind character well.

  7. ^ Thanks to Hoya and his loveable character, I am now a fan of him (and Infinite)! The gay theme in 'Reply 1997' didn't bother me at all. Still, I hope Yoonjae ends up with Shiwon. Lol.

  8. While ignoring the netizens shitty comments, I was actually pleasantly surprised the show touched on same sex marriage and child raising. I did not expect it.

  9. ahhhh wait regardless of the content, i can't believe hyunwoo changed his hair now. *swooooooons*

yeah. hehe. sulli's a girl. would've been better if it was actually guyxguy. but that would sway off from the plot

  10. That's the same reasoning international fangirls have for pairing their male biases: the guys are hot, they know it's not real, etc. Maybe some are actually accepting of gay people, but the majority probably aren't because if oppa really was gay then they'd have no chance with him. QUELLE HORREUR!

  11. the korean don't take it well.

If it really have a guy plus guy in the drama they are against it. Had a drama where had a guy guy couple and the mothers even went far to post an article in newspaper sayign it was wrong and what if their kids did the same by watching the drama?

    LOLOLOL

  12. Differences in culture. Don't assume that the american/western mindset = world.

    1. Are you kidding me. Do you realize how much homphobia there is in the western world anyway? There should be NO HOMOPHOBIA,ANYWHERE. It's not 'cultural'.

  15. @aaaaa of course not *facepalm* that is not the point at all.
that comment implied that homosexuals are accepted only if "eye candy" or if homosexuality is portraited in a comic way..that's disturbing

  18. You know, if an actor plays his gay role so well, have some people who thinks they might be on real life, instead of thinking how great their acting is.

Kim Nam gil for example said people told he was gay just because he did that movie No regret.
