They have three kids, and most couples choose to hang on to their marriage just until the kids grow up a bit more, but he weighed his options and figured in the end that he'd rather do it alone. The fact that she didn't "see it coming at all" just shows that she wasn't even paying attention to her husband at all. It's basically admitting to having no idea that her own partner was struggling in their marriage.
