SBS clarifies deleting "ladies" from Michelle Yeoh's speech in response to growing online anger

1. [+913] Who do they think they are to be censoring the true meaning of someone's award speech?
2. [+972] Who do they think they are to just erase a whole word from someone's speech like this? Since when was the news allowed to just interpret someone's words as they wish and change it up to say whatever they want???? That's ridiculous.
3. [+377] This is absolutely disgraceful of SBS and actually scary. That means they have complete discretion to change up any piece of news that they release to edit and manipulate to their own desires.
4. [+331] They deleted the audio, that's not news... that's manipulation. Why even leave in the part where she's the 'female' winner? Why not just call her the 'winner' at that point?
5. [+283] The winner's words are the most important, not your own interpretation of it, SBS!
6. [+139] She won an award for Best Actress, what's so wrong with using the word ladies?
7. [+301] What's really insidious about SBS' explanation is that they're interpreting Michelle Yeoh's speech as meant to incite a gender war but that's not what she meant at all. Earlier in the year, a male CNN anchor got in trouble for saying women are only in their prime up to their forties, so women set out to prove him wrong. It's also ridiculous that someone who calls themselves a so-called "journalist" got so triggered over her saying "ladies" that they just jumped to cutting it out instead of trying to properly understand the context. Why would you even try to interpret "ladies" in any other way? Many foreign medias have praised her for an amazing speech so for our own public broadcast station to make such a mistake... I'm just embarrassed.
8. [+39] This is why the media can be scary. All they have to do is erase a few letters and it changes the whole meaning of the speech.
9. [+204] Do only Ilbes work at SBS? Why do the same mistakes happen every single year?
10. [+152] What was problematic about what she said in the first place? She's in her sixties, and she's a woman of color. Can you imagine the amount of discrimination she must've faced all herl ife? A lot of older actresses in foreign media are constantly encouraging women to have hope, and that all stems from their own experiences in life. Sure, women have it better now and are able to voice their opinions more freely, but there are still pockets of the world where that is not a possibility. What is so wrong for her to use such an honorable opportunity to spread her influence? SBS is also ignorant to think that we are still living in the old ages where they're the only source of information.
11. [+8] Done with SBS news after today
12. [+3] This is so embarrassing, that something like this is still happening in our country.
13. [+5] They even cut out her audio? Damn...
14. [+3] SBS is ilbe ㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋㅋ
15. [+2] Wait, they actually deleted her audio, too? I thought they just mistranslated the subtitles... That's actually ridiculous.. who do you think you are to just change someone's speech like that?

1. [+374, -13] From the perspective of Michelle Yeoh... who has had to battle such stereotypes all her life, this message must've been so important for her to deliver... and for SBS to just delete that. It's pathetic.
2. [+180, -6] Her message is an important one. There are so many people who still think that women aren't women after their forties, and actresses in their forties continue to get less and less roles, less spaces in society... That's what she meant by "and ladies"... To leave out such an important element of her speech is either intentional or a highly problematic mistranslation.
3. [+95, -5] This is about what I'd expect from SBS
4. [+62, -8] There's always something wrong with SBS. They've constantly had issues with Ilbe stuff in their news and they refuse to fix any of it.
5. [+10, -1] Such a thoughtless and immature mistake to be making in this day and age
