1,500 plastic barrels with lights were installed on the bridge to prevent falls and suicides. Since the bridge's opening, 65 fall accidents have been recorded, with 54 resulting in deaths. Over five years, the bridge recorded 2-5 falls until it rose to 11 last year. This year marked the worst year for the bridge in fatalities, with three back to back deaths in the span of four days. This month alone, 20 suicide attempts resulted in 16 deaths.
1. [+528, -41] Perhaps we should instead be focusing on building a world where people find the hope to live in!
2. [+267, -8] I don't think a barrel is going to stop anyone whose intention is to die, tsk
3. [+184, -10] Just install electric fences so they can at least be knocked out from their attempt
4. [+147, -7] I once went fishing under that bridge and the waves were intense. Please don't do anything that will put rescue workers in harm's way.
5. [+101, -4] I feel like these barrels will just cause more problems
6. [+57, -1] We couldn't think of any better solution? What is a barrel in the face of someone who wants to die? And spaced five meters apart, that's wide enough for people to park their cars right into. They will also be in the way for emergency situations. I just don't think this is a good solution but rather a waste of taxpayer money. Let's get back to the drawing board. Maybe some type of monitor that can detect a car that's parked on the shoulder and alert people with a siren or spotlight.
7. [+27, -0] People aren't going to stop dying just because you're trying to block them. Just legalize euthanasia.
8. [+15, -1] Barrels or not, anyone who wants to die is going to park right there and do it... and if you put up a fence, they'll just find another bridge that isn't this one. We should be thinking about treating the root of the issue instead of wasting tax money on stuff like this.
9. [+9, -0] I reckon whoever came up with this idea has a relative working in the barrel business
10. [+9, -0] So you stop someone from committing here, what's stopping them from going somewhere else to jump?
