Article: The tragedy of the Pohang mother and son... mother was saved, son found dead

Source: Channel A via Naver + Nate

A 55 year old mother and her 15 year old son went down to move their car in the early morning upon hearing an apartment wide announcement warning of a possible flood in their parking lot. By the time the two got in the car, the flash flood had already filled the parking lot. The son managed to get out and open the door enough for the mother to get out as well before realizing that the situation was beyond their control. The mother noticed other residents in the parking lot gathering and asked her son to go with them without her because she didn't want her injured shoulder to burden their chances for survival. The son's last words to her were "Thank you for raising me" before he was discovered dead 15 hours later. The family has yet to inform the mother of his death.

1. [+1,179, -8] So obviously the 15 year old can't drive and move the car himself so he must've followed his mom down there out of worry from the rain and all.. ㅠㅜ I don't know what words could possibly console his parents for their loss ㅠㅜ

2. [+1,601] I'm crying... I wonder if the son knew what was going to happen so he said what he wanted to say...

3. [+1,450, -12] How is the mother supposed to live on with the guilt of knowing that she brought her son out there ㅠㅠ what a tragic final conversation ㅜㅜ

4. [+1,363, -13] As someone with a similar aged son myself, my heart is tearing apart ㅠ my tears just won't stop ㅠㅠ please rest in peace. No words will help... but find strength!!

5. [+189, -0] And I'm sure she held on to her life for those 14 hours with the belief that her son was still alive and that she needed to get back to him..

6. [+171, -1] So tragic... "thank you for raising me".. ㅜㅜ please rest knowing that you gave your mother 15 years of happiness. Rest in peace...

7. [+135, -90] Ah.. I'm crying. Most boys his age would rather sit in their rooms to game with their friends, but he was worried about his mother going out alone. A boy with such a deep sense of love.. ㅠㅠㅠ I wonder if he knew of his impending death.. how is his mother supposed to live on after hearing that?

8. [+129, -2] How could this have happened... The mother didn't think she'd survive so she sent him off, and the son understood what she was trying to do so he gave her his last farewell ㅠ

9. [+111, -2] I'm going crazy because I can't stop crying. I have a son his age and my heart is hcoking. With no one to blame, how can she live on anymore?

10. [+100, -2] No one could've ever predicted that he might've survived if he had just stayed with her;;;;

11. [+90, -0] When I saw the mother sobbing as she was being rescued, I felt so assured that she would be reunited with her son too.. I'm crying because this is so unfortunate..

12. [+88, -0] The mother told him "At least you need to survive" and sent him off to a group of other residents... I don't understand how something so tragic can happen to mother and son ㅠㅠㅠ

13. [+70, -0] To think that she was holding on with every ounce of her strength, believing that she had sent her son to safety.. to want to come out of this alive and let her son know that she was okay.. I can't imagine how empty she must feel right now.. ㅠ

14. [+69, -0] Knowing what had happened inside is making me cry ㅠㅠㅠㅠ the son must've had a feeling.. that this would be their last conversation. The mother will live the rest of her life in regret that she sent him off.. Reality is too harsh on her. If she had kept him by her side, could they have been saved together...

15. [+62, -0] There aren't many middle school boys who would get up in the morning to go out with their mothers like this ㅠㅠ

1. [+2,713, -12] What to do about this ㅜㅜ I was wondering why there was a teen listed in the deaths but it was because he's normally described as being glued to his mother ㅜㅜ how can a mother live after sending her son off like this?

2. [+2,018, -13] So tragic... may he rest in peace

3. [+171, -0] Such a kind son who went out with his mother to protect his mother from the weather... I can already see how much he must've loved her all his life ㅠㅠ

4. [+158, -2] How can the mother live on .. ㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠㅠ I can't even imagine a life where my own child is gone before me.. ㅠ

5. [+138, -0] I can't even imagine how much the mother must've been looking for him inside that parking lot all this time

6. [+125, -0] The mother doesn't know he's passed yet ㅠㅠ she won't be able to live a sane life after finding out.. she's already in precarious health, this will eat her from the inside out...

7. [+97, -0] How can a mother be expected to live on without a son who adored her so? May he rest in peace.

8. [+95, -1] Her life won't be the same after this ㅠㅠ she's probably thinking she would've rather gone instead of him.. I'm a parent, too.. this breaks my heart ㅠㅠ

His older brother, who is currently serving on Dokdo, was chartered a helicopter by the city to make it to his funeral.

1. [+179, -1] Good on the police for allowing this. It is only right that he gets to attend his dongsaeng's funeral. May he rest in peace.

1. [+307] So heartbreaking... I hope that his remaining family is able to overcome this.

2. [+170, -6] The two brothers must've been close for one to gift a car to the other. I can't imagine how sad the hyung must be.. he must regret ever buying him that car.

3. [+112, -1] Ah, how could they all leave us like this ㅠㅠ every single one of these stories breaks me into tears because they feel like all of our neighbors and families. Rest in peace.

Article: Families of the deceased in Pohang parking lot "If only we never heard the announcement to move our cars..."

Source: Chosun Ilbo via Nate

1. [+2,732, -128] News had been playing for a week before the typhoon that it'd be dangerous to keep your cars parked in underground parking lots. Even the day before the typhoon hit. The choice was left to the residents and it's unfair for them to be blaming the management office about it now. They were obviously making decisions with what they knew, they had no idea that this would've ended so tragically..;

2. [+1,595, -27] And if they had never made the announcement to move their cars, then all of the residents would still be angry that their cars were flooded and no announcement was given. How could you expect someone to make the right decision in the face of a natural disaster? Please don't witch hunt anyone over this.

3. [+1,501, -47] We need to start installing water barriers in these underground parking lots...

4. [+131, -7] It's terrible that lives were lost but there's no point in looking for someone to blame. It's an unfair witch hunt against the management office.

5. [+105, -2] There was no winning in this situation.. it's unfortunate what happened ㅜㅜ

6. [+100, -1] The management office did what they had to do. They could not have predicted that the river would've overflowed. The deaths are tragic but there's no one to blame. We all knew that underground parking lots were a danger risk in the time of a typhoon.

7. [+76, -2] This is a tragedy that can't be blamed on any one side

8. [+35, -2] It's unfair to blame anyone.. When you were down there, it was up to you to make the decision to go in or not. You should've known by then that there was no saving that car.

9. [+32, -1] I doubt the security ajusshi made that announcement hoping people would go down to their deaths. I understand that families are upset right now ㅠ but I'm sure the security ajusshi is riddled with guilt as well... This is no one's fault. It's just a reminder that nature is scary. I understand that the security ajusshi was in a losing situation. If he had never made that announcement, people would've been mad at him for their cars being left to flood. He made the best decision he could in that moment with the information that he had. Rest in peace, everyone...

10. [+26, -2] It's no one's fault. I'm sure the person who made that announcement is terrorized by the trauma of it all as well.. Don't witch hunt them.

2. [+502] People who are attacking him are going to end up driving him to his death right now

3. [+426] It's not your fault, please remember that!

4. [+713] What could anyone do in the face of such a natural disaster? You did the best you could in that situation.

5. [+1,273] I feel so bad for the trauma this is going to leave him with... it's not his fault at all
